22 patrols in GWX and yet to see any cool ships?

Its now the middle of 1942, I have an IXC boat and usually play my game like this..

Start my patrol from Lorent, plot course to my grid area, on my way I find a LARGE convoy, use all my torps, sink about 4-6 ships, contunie on my way to my grid, on my way back find another large convoy and sink another 4-6 ships.. Return home.. I have yet to see any really cool battleships or carriers, just the typical merchants and DD's

What do I have to do to find these things?

Your job isn't to find those things Your job is to sink merchant shipping. There are a lot more merchant ships than battleships and carriers.

I've been in a GWX career for 2 years game time now, and have only seen 1 battleship. I had to take the shot at long range, and missed.

Most u-boat commanders never saw a battleship or carrier, even the ones that made many patrols.

maybe 30 patrols now... 4 carreers on different sub, none passed 42 (DEAD is DEAD mode). For now I saw 2 fiji in a small task force in the channel (got one of them!), 1 fiji in a convoy during the norvegian invasion (as scripted event I found it s suck... sunk him and by the time I got all the other ship the fiji respawn :huh: ) and 1 southampton in the middle of a large convoy.

So no battleship nor carrier for me either by now :)

Generally speaking Capital Ships can be found in Scapa Flow and other British and American Harbours. You can see them in the open sea as well but they don't apear out of nowhere. Check the GWX Manual for the historical missions and try to be in the area of operations at the designated time.

I've seen two convoys off Scotland in 1940 with Nelson or Revenge BBs in their midst.
Hit the Nelson with 3 torps but got DC'd to destruction before it sank (I was young and inexperienced ;)). Hit the Revenge with 4, yes 4 torps and sneaked away deep. It sank.

Otherwise sank a Fiji in Loch Ewe.

These were all GWX.

GWX: Mediterranean - in my first four patrols (41), I ran into the same task force - twice in one patrol - 2 x BB, 3 x cruiser, etc. One of the patrols i missed all my shots, the next patrol i got nelson and kgv. I saw so many BBs that i actually got bored of it. If you want BBs outside the med, they go in a loop from Lock Ewe, down the coast, and into gibraltar. You can catch them anywhere along that route. If you see a contact report for a TF, intercept! BBs travel 18 - 20kts.

A dozen or so patrols for me and I've seen two Battleships inside merchant convoys - sank one.

Intercepted a BB with 9 DD escorts headed to Norway during that battle. (You want action - do the Norway battle) - sank it.

Other Aux Cruisers and Light Cruisers here and there.

I was stating to think I was seeing too many capital ships. :hmm:



Anyway, read up on the different scripted naval battles in the GWX manual. And be at those spots at the right times.

In GWX 1,03 started new career, 1939.
In patrols 2,3,4,5 ran into and sank a battleship on each patrol. Never seen a BB before.

3 of them were in convoys, 1 in a task force.

There is a TF with a carrier escorted by LC's and DD's that runs between scotland and Norway every now and then. I've seen it in numerous years and occasionally when I'm in a good position get to sink the carrier.

I'm just thankful that, at least BDU doesn't keep sending me to Honshu... over, and over and over and over......

in my total careers

I sunk a total of 5 Light cruisers
Fiji's and Southamptons.

2 Docked in Gibraltar (1941),
1 sailing near the british coast,
1 in the norwegian invasion
1 in a Convoy

In my total career, I've only sunk one capital ship and it was the King George V and it was in a convoy.

It's sinking is in one of my movies, called Surprise, or somthing like that.

I had DD's going over me by 1 meter and not detecting me, hehehehe.
and after I shot the Cruisers and sunk them, a patrol boat and 2 dd's where circling veeeery close to me, but I managed to sneak out undetected till I hit the open seas and had to take a breather (5% of air left)
they Dept charged me but could shake them off after a while
