Convoy Training Mission

Hi. I'm new to this game. I'm trying to complete the training mission but I am confused about the last one. I'm supposed to use the radar/sonar to detect the ship. But I can't turn either of them on. The button in the toolbar is grayed out.

Also, the first tutorial told you about how to navigate the ship and all. But I got very confused in later training missions. I felt I would be better off moving closer to the objectives, but I was really confused with the compas, I could select which way to go, but since I didn't have a compas to adjust to where I was, I didn't know which way to turn the boat... Any tips?

Saw the same thing when I went through the training missions. Just kept on playing and I was able to find the convoy and complete the training mission. Are you running version 1.2?
On the map, North is always up, matching the same orientation as the compass on your toolbar.
Keep plugging away and you will be an experience skipper in no time. By completing the training missions you will also be given extra renown, which can get you some nice upgrades for your first command.

I love the convoy mission, do the following:

1. dive as soon as you enter the mission, you are within visual distance of the escorts.

2. dive to 80 feet, the convoy will appear on your sonar. turn until you are heading towards the convoy.

3. at this point you have two options:

3.1 - rise to PD and maneuver around the escorts, their skill level is "poor" (it is a training mission), and will not pick you up unless you are right in front of their bow; or

3.2 - dive under the Thermal Layer (usually around 150-200 feet), wait until the escorts pass overhead (easiest way is to let your sonar man follow the nearest contact) and rise up to PD

4. At this point, the escorts should be behind you and the convoy right ahead, the rest is up to you skipper, make us proud.

regarding maneuvering, the easiest way is to plot a course on the NAV map and let the navigator worry about the heading.

you are supposed to start submerged but you dont anymore? it says it in the briefing and one of the messages you get says 'remain submerged' but you dont start out submerged.

I suspect this is because of a bug in both SH3 and now SH4. If you load a game submerged, really really bad things happen to you and your crew. Someone should probably mod the practice mission so you start further away on the surface.
