I've been happily playing GWX (well mostly happilly, been bitten by the save game CTD a couple of times, grrr). But I have a couple of questions if y'all don't mind my asking...

1.) I quite frequently get the warning from my crew that radar is detected, then a grey sunken ship icon apprears in the direction of the contact. What is going on there? It happens in all sea conditions.

2.) Why won't my crew fire their flak guns? I like to have them shoot at single planes sometimes for fun in my VIIC with 2 light flak/1 heavy flak. I put a flak rated officer on deck, put men with no fatigue on the guns, and tell them to fire at will. Sometimes 1, 2 or all 3 guns will open up. Do they need to be warrant officers or can regular seamen do the job? Do they need to be a certain rank? I can't figure it out. Alot of the times the guys just sit there with 1 dude on one of the light flaks firing. The green bar at the flak station is full.

Thanks!

G'day and welcome to subsim.

I'm not sure I've ever seen what you describe in 1. Hopefully someone who has may be able to help.

In relation to 2 have you got them set to shoot at long, medium or short range, at approaching aircraft or all and at fighters, bombers or any type. I have noticed that sometimes if I've sat in the gunners seat they tend not to fire for a while, but usually can get all guns blazing if you get the settings right and stay out of their positions.

howdy,

1 that's odd, never seen that

2 sometimes the flakgunners seem a bit reluctant to fire the first shot, what i do is go to each of their positions with f11 and fire one round manually, after that they tend to blast away quite happily

I also suggest you don't try shooting down single planes that are hurricanes or other fighters, they're not very hittable :nope: save your ammo for big lumbering bombers and swordfishies they're more dangerous but a lot easier to take out

Hello

1. The grey ship icon you see is for a ship that sunk in bad weather or close to land. When you see the message "radar signals detected" did you saved the game? If you did were you close to land as well? That should explain this behaviour. As a rule of thumb NEVER save close to other ships and close (100-50 Km or less) from land as things tend to go wrong.

2. This is a stock SH3 Bug. The Flak gunners don't open fire on their own. The solution is simple. Man the flak gun yourself, aim and fire at the direction of the target and leave the screen. After that your gunners will pick it up and keep firing.

Thanks for the responses :)

I've learned (from this forum:D ) to not save near land, near ships or sinking ships, or submerged. But I still ocationally get bit by the save bug.

The grey ship/radar thing is wierd. It can be perfectly calm seas, I haven't saved recently, I'll just be chugging along. "Radar signals detected!". I go to the map (or I'm already there), and an instant later, where the contact line was pointing, a grey ship icon pops up. I'm nowhere near the bermuda triangle, so ships/planes whatever they are shouldn't be crashed outta the blue on perfectly nice days ;)

I usually have my flak gunners set to fire at will, long range, all targets and directions. I generally only shoot at lone bombers or search planes like Catalinas. If I see more then one contact when radar is detected, it's time to dive:) I did try to take on a hurri once, but after a few passes he lined up nicely from behind my boat and raked us good. It was not a pretty sight on deck :( I'll try hopping into each position and firing off some shots in the planes direction.

Not necessarily so I'm afraid (this has been tried by others as well as myself) :nope:

The best way to to circumvent the flak issue is to go to each gun in turn (you can fire a short burst if you wish) then go straight to the bridge then back to the next flak then back to the bridge etc. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ONLY GO TO THE BRIDGE BETWEEN EACH FLAK VISITED.

I HAVE seen the sunken ship icon you described.

I think there is an issue with the spawning of aircraft in formations of 2 or more.

One one campaing i was playing with external camera on, i will hit the period key and cycle through contacts to see how serious a threat is on the other end of the radar detection line. much to my surprise i see one aircraft climbing out, then another aircraft next to him (his wingman) splashing into the sea. then at this point the grey sunken ship icon appears there.
