Let me first disqualify myself as a computer expert, I can do simple basic things on one of these contraptions and that's about it.
But!
I am a consumer who live's in the United States where big brother looms and watches most everything you do , and then tell's everyone it isn't happening.
But, that's another story, I have been gaming for nearly 10 years now and own approximately 500-600 PC games as I had 4 Children through 3 marriages.
Not that the PC gaming had anything to do with the demise of their finalization.
But as a Father of 4 Children early on I learned that " Kid's are tough on PC equipment"
I've had everything from business cards to bacon incerted into my CD Rom drive's at one time or another.
So what prompt's this insignificant rant is this, reading the forums here as I do everyday because Im retired now and living alone in Hooterville Nevada.
Most of my day is spent doing graphic art and PC gaming, what else is there to do here in this area except hunt , and fish ?
The girls here are cornfed and extramly prosperous and healthy, so dating is out as I do not have enough money to place in stock to buy gold medal flour to add to a date kit which is what you need here .
So PC gaming is the life for me.
So Im reading yesterday about the no DVD fixes that people are using here, and I've heard all the garbage about the cracks are bad, the game's are pirated, to my dog ate my disk.
I noticed that people are frowned upon for using a No DVD fix, they are called Criminal's, theive's, scoundrel's , Pond Scum , and should not be allowed to participate in anything which occures her as they are not worthy.
Well , I have hundred's of PC games from every Mfg. you can think of including Ubi Soft.
So I have possibly 10,000- 12,000 dollar's worth of games which I have purchased over the year's.
So am I a pirate ? A scoundrel perhap's ?
Im just like each and everyone of you, just a guy who is trying to protect his investment, at $ 49.99 a pop ( the cost of a game disk today )
I use No CD and no DVD fixe's.
In some case's they actually make the game's run better because the copy protection screw's the Darn thing's up in the first place.
Out of all my PC games the one's I play the most are made by Ubi Soft, great company fenominal visionaries, but!
They push things out the door too fast, they do not test them enough to make sure ther are no problems.
Every game I have owned that was Mfg. by Ubi has had Issue's of one type or another.
So , is the No DVD fix messing with the game ? or isn't it ?
As I said at the start of this little tirate I am no expert, but I have been gaming for nearly 10 years and I can say that Historically through first hand knowledg that Ubi Softs stuff, and everyone elses stuff has problems.
And thats without any CD/ DVD fixes.
Everyone here love's these Sub Sim games, I love it; it allows you to emerse yourself into another rhelm from time to time.
So , am I a bad person ? because I use a No DVD/ CD fix in order to save my game ?
Who can judge , Im just an average guy atempting to protect his investment as game disk's now a day's are not cheap, and now being on a fixed income the rest of my life I have to protect my stuff even more.
So the No DVD fix will help me to keep my Gaming disk's intact just a bit longer.
Some of you are saying im just an old fart who doesn't know anyhting.
Well that may be true, I was in Local Gvt. for 23 yrs and I know how things work, and that's just small City gvt. mind you, and I know the Cheap weasleing way's of our local elected official's.
I can only Imagine the shadyness which occurs in our Main governmental body in Washington.
And I suspect it is the same in most countries, some are more corrupt than other's.
I came to the conclusion long ago my job was to put crook's into jail/prison and not into office.
So if your thinking about prossecuting the people who make these No DVD fixe's?
Let me tell you a story and Jed isn't involved.

One Sunny Satarday afternoon Im working the west side area of my local town and I get a call to meet with the RP at the El Rancho Drive in ( RP= reporting person)
So I drive my MOP ( Mobil Observation Platform) over and meet with two Hoover High Graduates.
Now mind you , these guy's are a great bunch, but they lack life experiance in most cases which is true with most everything which occure's in life.
So me and the Two UC ( undercover) wanna be's saunder over to the El Rancho flea market and do a walk through.
They have infromation about counterfit Cassette tape's being sold there.
So we walk over to several booth's and they pick up some items and gander at them then they come across this one booth where there had to be 10,000 Cassette tapes of all denominations and brands.
The occupants of the booth were not of this country, which country?I have no Idea.
As a mater of fact myself and the two Hoover boy;s were possibly the only caucasion people in this place.
So back to the story, the Cassette's get confiscated, all 10,000 of them, and I know cause I had to help load them up into the van which the Hoover boy's bought with them.
Here's the interesting part, and pay attention cause this get's really complicated and you will see why .
The two Hoover Grad's do the equivilant of an FI card ( Field Interview) and let these 4 people go with no Citation, no posting of bail no nuthen.
They take the Bootlegged cassette tape's and put them into evidence.
Now, did this go to trial ?
No way not in my life time anyway , all these people were Illegal's after they were released they skedattled back to Bangcock or tiajuana, or Saudi Arabia to whence they came.
Here's the sad part, this stuff is so previlant in the United States that they can't keep up with it, let alone prossecute these people.
So I can only Imagine what is occuring in a third world country where they don't have the benefit of a Hoover High establishment of this caliber.
Trying to prosecute a case of this nature is a logistical nightmare, first you have to have a victim, and in most cases he/she is in a differant State, let's say Oklahoma.
So now you have a bonified crime in Nevada with the victime in Oklahoma.
What do you do ?
Well if, you can get the victime outwest and find the bad guy's which Hoover's boy's let go again, then maybe you can have a trial.
I can't imagine what kind of cluster would occure if this happened here and the victim is in another country where alot of stuff is made.
The gyst of this is that your unborn child will die of old age before most of these cases get prossecuted let alone even go to a preliminary hearing to be plea bargined down to left side parking in an alley way .
So as you can see putting these guy's in jail or even getting them punishment is not likely.
Yeah you hear the stories about the one's who went to jail and are doing prison time now.
But hey !
that's one case, this happenes everyday in every town in America, and in every country around the world.
Good luck Mr Prossecuter have a nice day .
So the moral to this story , is everyone who uses a No DVD fix a bad person ?
Will they steal your babies milk money?
the answer is no, they are guy's like me who have hundreds of PC games and are trying to protect their investments.
The bottom line here is, and Im speaking from experiance here, the companies who put these games out need to make sure they are ready for release before they let them go out to the store shelves.
It's that simple, and everyone of you who has SH 1 thru 4 knows what Im talking about, cause there isn't a one of these games that didnt need a patch or a fix of some kind.
The market is driven by the Dollar/Yen/ Uro ... So take it easy on the ones who are legitt and just tryen to pass the time of day .

As you can tell I was boared and didn't have anything to do and I felt like writing a book.

Well mate - since you were a former "civil servant", its a thankless job, but thank you for the time you put in trying to make us all safe at night. I spent 8 years in a funny green suit, like many other ex-military that are in this community - but in all that time I also remembered and appreciated those that protected my home and family when I was deployed.

I have to agree with you on the no-cd issue. I have purchased every game I have, and right now I play SH4 cracked. While I see no issues with what I use (as some have with certain exe files) - I test using the original exe and dvd. This is just to insure no anomolous results.

Does this make us thieves? No - because we have stolen nothing. Does it make us immoral or unethical? No more so than the companies that want to charge us 20 bucks or more for a replacement cd - after we send them not only our original disk - but also the sales reciept from the store where we bought the game 2 years ago.....

For pirating games - I have no problem with tracking and stopping that practice - its what pays devs to make games is the SALE - not the theft. So yes - that has to be reacted to, and I don't blame companies for wanting to do it.

Now - as to companies sending out a game that doesnt need a patch - those were the good old days, my friend. Where Silent Service 2 came on 4 or 2 disk floppies based on size - it still had a patch. Managing the amounts of code on a DVD is exponetially more difficult - and with the need to "cut costs" - come the realization that no program is ever truly "finished". Companies used to cringe when they concluded they had to pay to develop a single patch - now - a number of them are factored into the financial equation before a game is ever given the ok to be developed. Thats what happen when things get bigger and "better". Alas.

Since your an "old man" - one thing you may enjoy - as I do on occasion - is a return to the games of yesteryear. Whenever nostalgia hits - check some of the old games - alot of companies have released their rights to games that were out in the 80's and 90's.

Just read the rules. No one is asking you to sign a declaration that you will not use no-CD cracks, but we do ask that you keep this info to yourself.
