I'm posting this FYI.
Just got a new 8800GTX with 768 MB onboard. Previously had x2 6600GT 256MB in SLi mode.

My computer is a measly:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+
2GB RAM
Western Dig 200GB 7200 RPM HDD.
So really nothing to look to cause much drooling.

The results:
x2 6600GT SLi : 10-15FPS with all setting at minimum. AA had to be set to x2 at most after patch 1.2 was released. (any higher and it crashes)

8800GTX: 50-70 FPS with all options at full with AA set at x16.

A very huge performace improvement. And this coming from a SINGLE vid card that was replacing a SLi mode. Technology has come a long way in a matter of 18 months.
Thought some ppl out there would like to see these kind of results (especially those with mediocre machines like mine)

I'm also running the game at 1680x1050 on the 8800. The 6600's would run at 1600x900

I have nearly an identical setup and can vouch for this.

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2 GB RAM
200 GB HD

I went from 2 NVidia 6800 GT's running in SLI to a single NVidia 8800 GTS and the stepup in performance is outstanding. Before, I had to run the game with low to midrange settings, with eye candy like environmental effects turned off. Now I can run it pretty much maxxed out with 4x AA and it looks great... getting 40-60 FPS nowadays

Informative post - thanks. Especially since I have that lower end card .... wheels turning .... wife .... how to deal with the wife :)

Interesting. I didn't want to buy another "old" 6600, and could not afford anythign like the 8xxx, so I spent $99 on a 7600 GT.

This tells me that even a modest upgrade is better than doing SLI on an old card.

The 7600 gets 25ish with everthing on and 8x AA

I've got a factory overclocked 7950 GT and run at 1600 x 1200 with everything maxed and x4 AA. I get between 35 - 50 fps in external view and freecam but that drops real heavily (like by 20 fps,) when there is volumetric fog. The rest of my system is 3.8 p4, 2 gig ddr2ram and an audigy2zs. It is a massive improvement over my old 6800.

I upgraded from a Athlon 3000+ and 6600GT to a Athlon x2 4200+ and 7800GT and noticed a doubling in proformance in SH3.

I also went from a 6600 to a 7800 GSOC (fastest card I could get for the 8x AGP) and doubled my performance. Actually it was FS10 that decided this upgrade. I whined to my wife and she bought it for me (Birthday last year) hmm Birthday coming soon again, lets see.
She never knows what to buy for her geek husband.

The 8800GTX rocks BAD! Had it since before Xmas.

EVGA 8800GTX, EVGA NV680i Mobo, C2D E6600 OCed@3.4Mhz, 2GB OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel, 800W Tagan PSU, 2xWD Raptor X 150GB
SB XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro...

Next on the buy list is a Samsung or Dell 30"

I'd like to see some of your 3DMark06 scores!

I'm at 11,101 at the moment. I also get around 70 FPS in SH4, with it rarely dropping. I have a GF 8800 GTS 640 MB, but I also have a Core 2 e6600 and overclock like a fiend.

6600s aren't really that impressive, so SLI'd wont help a ton. Always get the top card in whichever series you can afford. It's worth it. My 7800 doesn't break sweat with this, so I bet the 8800 really motors.

Or I could have said....

*tongue in cheek*
I'm lucky I have an enormous penis so I don't need to compensate by comparing 3d mark scores or gloating about my PC spec.

Jeez, wish I wouldn't have seen this thread :(

My system is:

AMD Athlon FX-60 oc'ed to 2.81
DFI LanParty mobo
2x 7900 GTX SLI
2gb Corsair PC4000

With all gfx sliders maxed, 1600x1200, all eye-candy on except volumetric fog, I was getting a nice, solid, playable 30fps on the bridge, in the free cam, in the control room, and 60fps on the map.

After reading this thread I decided to enable SLI for SH4 (was on single-gpu mode) just to see what would happen.

Enabling SLI dropped my fps to 12-15 :damn::damn::damn:

OK, so I put SH4 back to single-gpu, rebooted the machine and I'm still getting 12-15 fps. Has gone from quite playable to unplayable unless I disable a lot of eye-candy.

Anybody got any thoughts on how to fix this? And nope, not a heat problem, my system is watercooled, CPU and both GPU's. Temps are well within limits.

Actually, I find performance tends to be MUCH higher just buying the midrange card each generation, every time.

IE., instead of a 7800, I had a 7600GT from that gen. Since I didn't blow $400 on the high-end card (7600GT was less than $200), I am able to go out and buy a GeForce 8600GTS now. Performance is FAR higher than the 7800s, and as this card is ALSO less than $200...I end up ahead price-wise, too.

OTOH, this is only really good for 'staying ahead' if you really DO keep up with buying the midrange card each and every generation. I am fully aware a lot of people just want to buy one and be done with it, not even open their system for the next 3 or 4 years. Me, I have the thing open a couple times a month anyway just to keep it clean, so upgrading constantly, and just using the 'budget' or 'midrange' parts each time (where the best "bang for the buck" is anyway) works fine.

(FWIW, I'm rather obsessed with "bang for the buck", anyway. When one card costs 50% more to deliver only 20% more performance than another...that's not a good deal, IMHO. Generally, each gen, I run a few spreadsheets dividing framerate in some game, or 3dmark, by the best price I can find online for the part to get a "price:performance" graph I can use to base a buying decision on.)

I dont have a link but over at Toms Hardware you can compare different cards in Single and SLI. Two of the top 7000 series cards in SLI still cant match a single 8000 series, its quit an eye opener.

I've got a single BFG 7800GTX thats rapidly becoming 'outdated' . Instead of spending $200+ on another 7800 for SLI, I'm now better off spending the same amount of money on a single 8000 series card for twice the performance, unbelievable! SH3 lGraywolves looks much better to me than SH4 1.2 and thats a bummer!

Speaking of 3DMark06, is that an 'accurate' benchmarking tool or is there another better one to check system performance gains or losses?

Well just ran 3DMark06

3DMark Score10657

Markshttp://service.futuremark.com/images/1x1pix.gifCPU Score2425 Marks

I think what dragged it down a bit was that I am currently OCed to "Intel Core 2 3021 MHz" I forgot I tweaked it down from 3.4 due to heat some weeks ago. I am always chasing heat :p (Ninja Scythe, Ambient= 38-42, Load=48-50) I guess I could crank it up a bit and run again...but the system runs just fine and smooth as it is so ;)

Getting 60 FPS constant with ALL MAXED+ 16xAA in SH4 so i can't complain.
