All I can say is, look north. Greenland, near the whaling stations. I found mine by hydrophone, identified as a single merchant, stationary. They're out there.

You'll only see the icebergs if you're using one of the supermods, such as GWX, etc. If you're just using a vanilla install of SH3 with minor mods, you won't get icebergs in the campaign. You WILL see some on single missions, however.

Check far north on the map, there is a couple of places identified as whaling stations, usually in allied control....

hang on. You are running GWX arent you?

Ok, well look up at the north of the map, there should be a whaling station or two (I am in 1940 at the moment), I essentially went to within about 100kms of the whaling station closest to England, then began heading roughly south west via greenland onto the Halifax convoy route, hydrophone picked up the iceberg contact just south of Greenland. If I could find an online version of the map with grid refs i could give you the grid ref it was in!

can someone in the know post up a pic of the chart within the game and circle the likely areas to see a 'berg?

I am also very keen to see one :yep:

As far as I know, GWX is the only mod that fixes the icebergs. IIRC they had spawning problems... and definately had no functional propulsion.

Thanks to Ref, Cdre Gibs, and Rubini we fixed 'em.

I caught an iceberg on the radar once in mid-43 off the coast of Halifax. It was a foggy day and the radar show a target. I follow it only to find out in the last possible moment that it's an iceberg. Thankfully we avoided Titanic, although we did get really close :yep: :|\\ :|\\

Usually you can find them off the coast of Canada (Halifax) and between Canada and Iceland and around Greenland in March-April.

Just for conversation, and I don't mean to hijack a thread, but what is the facination with ice-bergs beyond a cool eye-candy appeal? To me it is like the interest of wanting to sail into NY to scope the statue of liberty. To be fair I guess maybe if you've seen these things up close then there isn't a high appeal to see them in a game.

For the same reason we put new ships, aircraft, 3D objects, realistic graphics, improved sound, biologicals, corrected player U-boat 3D models and everything else we did.

Part of realism is presenting a realistic, living world.

That means having icebergs in the ocean.:88)

Before GWX they were unavailable as well, due to being broken.

Yeah i was bored and didnt want to do a paper so i created a crazy SP mission.

It included 5 liners, 10 tank transports, 3 Aircraft Carriers and a few Didos.
And it had a whole bunch of Massive Icebergs ansd some smaller ones. I had all the ships running at Flank Speeds, heading towards the icebergs. I dived down and went below the icebergs, safely away from any sinking ships. It was fun to watch as the ships scrambled to evade the icebergs. Some of the liners hit the bergs and the other ships, i got bored with that so i went to PD and sank sank the warships and finished the rest with the deck gun, then i dived and started ramming the ice berg and sank haha

I guess that all sounds ok, I mean it is good to have such details where someone would enjoy seeing them. I would say that is where plenty of memory and a good graphics card pays off.

Actually, I just ran across an Iceberg today. Reported as a "slow moving merchant!". :o Grid AF19 I believe. Using GWX too. Pretty neat seeing that berg. Had to show the wife and kids. Be careful navigating too. There's just as much iceberg underwater as there's up top. Started a new career too. Sept 39.

Isn't it so that you can reach the ice shelf in SH III if you travel far enough north?

If I am not mistaken I remember someone (I think it was Beery) reaching the ice shelf and posting pics of it....

That would be one big iceberg...

I would think icebergs are the last things you would want to see, because of their hazard to shipping....unless you're out of torpedoes, have plenty of fuel, and....what was it ? a few slabs ? :D

Icebergs are an interesting novelty; just make certain you are awake when you are cruising in those Arctic regions.

My first iceberg I never saw. One morning I awoke to find my monitor reporting my career ended due to collision. The area was adjacent to Iceland (ironic), one hundred kilometers from anywhere.

My second iceberg I nearly missed. A month of real time later, heading for the same area, I turned in and, as is not unusual, let the boat run through my sleep. I awoke to the hoopla of massive damage and slow sinking, half of my crew wounded or dead. We managed to save the boat, and with if I remember 12% hull integrity I was ready to acquiesce to my attacker. We had no choice but to pop to the surface, and scanning the horizon...I see my first iceberg. My only regret is giving up the career, rather than trying my luck getting back to port.

If you really want to see one you should be be running with GWX. You should be in the Arctic region; I experienced mine in Spring, think it was 1940.
If you Time-Compress for travel you may be speeding by them without knowing it.
I would prefer you discover them spontaneously, like Easter Eggs in Flight Simulator. But if you can't wait, run with SH3Commander, and after you're some distance from Port, Stop, Save, Exit, Rollback SH3C's Mod files, and set your Time Compression Near Land to "One". Then ReStart, and Time-Compress your way all you want through the Arctic. Given that you have enough fuel, and you stay away from the Mainlands, any proximity to a land mass will slow the sim to Real-Time One. Scanning the area around your boat in relatively clear weather should produce a lumbering iceberg "just passing through".
