Sorry, hard time remembering which boat I always wanted.
I like the VII. Good for both long range (not as long as the IX of course) and short range missions. Best of both worlds. :D

VII - good dive time, at speed you can get her under in something like 25 seconds.
took a IX for a spin a while ago. at flank speed i timed the crash dive...everything was under water at the 50 second mark! would hate to get cought on the surface needing to get under in rough seas from a dead stop or a slow crawl!
I am playing one campaign in an IX... dont care for it, sure it has a lot of torps but it just doesnt appeal to my play style.
i would rather have the nimble type VII.
of course this discussion is as old as the U-boats themselves.
Yeah I'm a long time VII guy myself doing my first career with a IX.
Like you say, the dive time for the IX is tough to take in a tight spot. And really once you move to France you can take plenty of long trips with the VII no problem.
And there are always milk cows for longer trips.
But I'm a IXer for the time being. So far so good with my tonnage totals and no real damage suffered yet. Jury is still out.

VII for short hunting patrols to wherever(with unlimited fuel turned on). IX for long hunting patrols with little to no need for re-supply. It really does depend on what kind of hunting you do.

Thats what I do,4 different careers on the go with different boats for different situations,if I've lots of time on my hands then its typeIX,couple of hours to kill, its typeII time, anything else its the good old typeVII's turn, why limit yourself;)

Well of course...WE know that :D
They are both excellent, IMHO.. But it all depends on what you will be using them for....Going harbour-raiding & operating along the british coast, i find the VII boats best, But on the long hauls, with a lot of convoy intercepts, the IX type is my favourite. Just my 2.99 cents...

Enough of this, the only boat that you can use for all aspects of SH3 is the IX. Now, why wouldn't anyone want to go harbour raiding in a IXD2. (although if you do, stay away from NY, it's a bugger turning the D2 around once you are past the port:p)

Humbug, where's your 22 torps like the IXB. :know: :smug:
IX Boats all the way bigger and better and greater firepower. The contest is over IX is the winner.

Deja Vu
My personal favourite is the VIIB.
But I have to say some coastal america bashing in a IX might be fun- not done that since the days of SHII :p
But the slower submerged speed and markedly increased dive time in comparison to my trusty VIIB which whilst it doesn't have the surface speed, is much more manoeuvrable.
......or the 26 even, in the IXD2 :arrgh!:
Better still. :|\\

I like the VII the most I'd have to say. VII-C over the B because it can take more upgrades IIRC.
PS: Does anyone else call them "vee two" besides me? Vee two bee or vee two see... I know they're "seven", but I can't help it.

Will someone give this man his chocolate cake before he dose something which will make you laugh.
I was a devout VIIC man, but decided recently to give the IX a shot. I have to say after the initial frustrations I had with that boat it became addictive. Personally here are my qualifications for using which boat:
1. If you are even thinking about the Med, stick with a VII (if you start out your career in the Med it is a moot point as you do not have the choice to use a IX).
2. If you go with the IX, be prepared to spend renown on Radar detecting gear, anti-Radar coatings & Schnorkel. AIRCRAFT ARE YOUR BIGGEST THREAT detect them as early as possible and make yourself as invisible too them as possible. The dive time of the IX pig is pretty scary.
3. I am conflicted about upgrading the Anti-aircraft armament on the IX. I tend to lean towards loading up on the quick firing multi-barrel bastards...but at least in my experience I would have been better off not improving these weapons at all...depending on them always ended in moderate to severe damage or death...without exception in the later war years. If I do an IX again, I will not touch the AA. Diving ASAP is your best bet. I know others may differ, but I have had no luck fighting it out on the surface.
4. If you are planning on patrolling the Horn, the USA, Carib. or...Indian Ocean for that matter, do yourself a favor and get the IX and see point two.
5. If you want to focus on the North Sea, W. Approaches, even the North Atlantic you might be better off with the VII as these airs are ripe with aircraft. That said, it is such a target rich environment that the extra torpedo load of the IX is still tempting.

Both types are good, but I prefer Type IX. Gives you an oportunity to reach much more interesting and distant locations.
Sure, entering a convoy in VIIC rocks. But on the other hand, what can beat the feeling of hunting down enemy vessels near Mogadishu, or Ceylon ? With strong feeling that all the mess in Europe is soo long way away :sunny: With VIIC, you just can`t have it. On the other hand, VIIC is much better for somehow quick actions. I mean, these boats have better maneuvrability and diving time and most torpedoes stored inside the boat - you can get them somewhere around the Isles to hunt down a convoy in one-two nights battle, then come back to base and make another such patrol and another one in the same time you`re halfway on IXD2.
Still, the feeling.
Why argue?:nope: They are both good at what the do so use em both in different campaigns and have fun doing it.:yep:
Yep me...I call them Vee twos, and eye exes :yep:
Glad I'm not the only one! I only do it to the V2's for some reason though... 2, V2, 9 and 21. :hmm:

Not me; it's "Type two-dee, type seven-see, type nine-bee, and type twenty-one."
Once you get 100,000 tonnes on a VII patrol, you qualify to discuss which sumbie is best. :smug:
I like catching convoys a long way from their destination and visiting them after dinner and for morning tea, leaving a trail of sunken ships on the chart. For that, I need a IX. :arrgh!:

I've always been a VII fan myself, save up and then dish out the renown on a monster XXI. This is mainly because of the dive time on the IX subs, you could make yourself a brew and only just be half way there lol...better pray those mosquito pilots are busy back at the mess having their mid afternoon tea and buiscits otherwise your off to meet ol' Davey Jones lol!:arrgh!:

Actually the comparison should be simple:
start two carreers, one with VII and the otherone, well with VII too, as soon as you can get the IX or XI or XX or whatever, try to live to 1945.
I have the feeling, since I just used the latter one for a patrol in 1943, I will have my VII back.. its comming close to seconds then, and the VII is just a tad faster in manouvres, and yes, THEN you need those seconds.
But arent those boats not build for a purpose?
Well folks for what it's worth The Military Channel (U.S.) just did a show called Top Ten Subs.
I missed numbers 10 and 9, but the only German sub in the Top 8 was rated the best sub in history:
The Type VII
Ratings are by impact/performance during it's time, of course. They're not saying it's better than today's subs.
Yes the VII was number one - I missed the entire deal except for of course the number 1 pick - figures don't even know the other 9 lol.
