im missin so many shots that im convinced that incorrect AOB is the cause how accurate does AOB have to be, within 1 or 2 degrees or what?
i also read that as long as the uboat and the target stay on the same course the AOB is automatically updated by the tdc which is handy for attackin multiple targets. how does this work?
AoB is important but so is speed. The two form an important tandem in your solution. Range itself isnt as important. However being off by a fair bit in speed or AoB can throw everything off.
Also, yes the TDC does automatically track the target based on where you point your periscope. Once you set AoB you've told the computer the course that the ship is sailing on and it calculates the ship's position and the gyro angle based on where the scope is pointed. This is how you can aim at particular parts of the ship. This is also how you can fire at multiple targets in a convoy. Although you'd need to adjust range for every ship. Once you enter AoB, so long as the target ship remains on its original course it will accurately predict the correct targeting solution.

i was under the impression that range does matter in the slightest, it only effects the time till impact on the stopwatch. you will notice that when u adjust the range none of the torpedo settings change.
and how degrees for AOB can u afford to be out on say a 2000m shot?

That's correct. Range measuring is useful only to know if the target is out of reach and to get speed. But other than that the triangle formed by your sub, the target and the point where torpedo impacts is proportional, the longer the distance to target, the same proportion longer all three corners, so by constant speed of both target and torpedo the impact point remains.

As many as, given the range to target, would set the enemy ship out of the torpedo's path. You should be able to calculate it using distance to target, target length and sinus:up:

actualy the range is useful for spread shot, the farthest the target is, the smaller the angle you re selecting for a spread shot.
