View Full Version : Navigation problems below 100m
Hi!
I've noticed that my navigator misses the waypoint if I'm submerged below 100m. The U-boat just circles around waypoint and is unable to continue on course to another waypoint.
When I decrease depth to less than 100 m, I can resume on course.
Is this a known problem/bug, or is it just me?
I'm playing vanilla SHIII with the latest patch, sailing on Type VIIC on my 22nd patrol :arrgh!:

Welcome to Subsim Meduza:up:
Yes, this is a known bug however it more commonly occurs after a reload of a save.
IIRC, to correct it for your current patrol, delete the waypoint that you're having trouble with and then ask your Nav officer to 'follow plotted course'.
Enjoy your stay.:sunny:

@ danlisa, funny, i have this bug too sometimes, never knew what caused it, but IIRC it also occurs at the next waypoint if it is close (like 5km) to the one deleted.
When navigating under water (mostly when evading DDs) i ususally don't use the plotted course anymore, because of this bug and the follow plotted course makes the engines go to full speed, and hence make noise  if stopped by the telegraph instead of being set to a specific speed
Thanx for the welcome and the answers... :D
I've just done some testing, it seems that this bug is not only present in the Career after a reload, but also in single mission. I started the Bismark mission, ploted a course and dived. When I reached 100 m, the U-boat started to circle around a waypoint :hmm:

Quite correct mate.......if the boat isn't on it's intended course and steering in a straight line prior to reaching the next waypoint, the same problem occurs :yep:

Were you already at 100m or still approaching it when you hit the waypoint. I'm pretty sure, now that my memory has been jogged, that the deciding factor is your distance from the waypoint.:hmm:

I'm pretty sure, now that my memory has been jogged, that the deciding factor is your distance from the waypoint.:hmm: Hm, I've tried numerous waypoint distances, and I don't think it has any influence on it. It happens always when you are below 100m, and never if you are above..

I remember reading about this issue about a year and half ago. I think the conclusion drawn from a lot of testing was that the game engine has to get to less than 100 meters to a waypoint to consider it has reached it. And since the game places the waypoint on the ocean surface you end up going in circles as the navigator tries his best to get to that waypoint 100 meters above the sub. Kind of reminds me when my dog chases his tail...

Lol, I always thought this was a feature not a bug. :rotfl:Thought the navigator would just have trouble to determine the boats position in deep waters or something.
