I have a Gato class, installed the SD radar, then the Improved SD radar, however I cannot turn it on.

no worries, it may not work anyway...mine doesnt.
SD radar is currently useless with patch 1.2 sorry.

there are some radar fixes out there, check in the mod forum. The one I'm using fixes the SD, unfortunately it also allows the SD to pick up ships. it also fixes the SJ, which is problematic, it only works in 1.2 at certain headings.

Yes! The S-class also known as "sugar boats."

Yeah, i wont go any bigger than the Porpoise. The S-Boat dives like a fish, the only problem is that they dont travel very fast on the surface, makes doing end-arounds difficult.

Great. Just left Pearl in my brand-new Gato. My reward for being "aggressive" and sinking all those marus? No more radar.
Oh, well. I could never use the radar worth a damn in SHIII; guess I'll just pretend I'm in a u-boat.
While I'm on the topic, what are you getting with a Gato? Faster? Deeper? More room in the 'fridge for your beer?

Which mod have you tried?
Flavoured to taste by Ducimus includes a radar fix, but I'm not sure if there are more radar fix versions out there? do any of you guys know?

I think Dumicus' FTT mod has disabled SD radar completely, allowed SJ radar to detect both ships and planes, and made it available at the beginning of the war.
Another one fixes the SJ radar, at the cost of allowing SD radar to pick up ships.
So we have a choice between two imperfect solutions.

Radar does work in 1.2, you just have to wait until you get the proper sub and get to the 1st quarter 1943. I had a porpoise, and even tho it let me load both radars, they wouldnt turn on. As soon as I go my Gato and got to March 1943 radar worked. It is confusing that they let you load it prior to 1943, but that is the deal.

Radar only "sort of works", no matter what date or mod.
SD should be an A-scope i.e. range only, no bearing information. You should get a report "SD contact, 12 miles, closing" and then be able to jump to the scope to watch if it's still closing. Quite realistic to have a plane close to within 6 miles before deciding to dive.
SJ is the PPI, although I believe initial version was also A-scope with bearing also.
Current situation is the SD either detects ships (per 1.1) or doesn't seem to detect anything reliably (my experience in 1.2). SJ has problems based on your heading (!!??)......
Radar is very important to the sim as USA subs made extensive use of it. It is one of the major issues the devs need to fix, IMO.
