View Full Version : incorrect draft measurements?

I am a little confused with ship drafts. I came across a convoy with a kongo sitting at the heart if it. After careful flanking and setting up I managed a nice salvo from 1k yards.

I checked the draft by the foldout that came with the game. 9.8 meters. ok.. hmm. My math comes up with 32' and change. With this I set my first two fish at 15' and the third at 7'. firing and hoping I jumped to camera to watch the hits while diving.

My first torpedo (and second) almost miss under the ship!! All three were set for contact. And yes. the first did not hit the battleship. it went off underneath while set to contact. Second fish hit a touch higher than the first but still right on her keel. Third hit almost center between waterline and bottom of the ship.

My question I guess is can I expect to have other draft measurements off by 50% or does anyone know if this was just a fluke?

on a side note.. she went low then rolled. got the kill but she never sank. sitting upside down with two large holes above the water. *laughs*

Have you tried Krupp's Jap Ship Dimension fix? See here:

I have. It shows near to the same depth for the kongo's draft as I had. Maybe I am misunderstanding 'draft'. It is the depth of the ship below waterline is it not?

I just fired on a Minekaze destroyer with the same effect. 700 yard shot broadside. Draft of 9.6 feet. Torpedo depth of 5 and missed underneath it. Is not a range issue. My fish was right behind the stack but low by a foot or so. I guess this one could be due to rough water but it did not look to rough.

US torps in the early part of the war suffered from some severe depth control issues, often causing the torps to run deeper than they were set to. If the game's modeling this (and I hope they are) it would account for the misses.

The torpedoes were at average running 11 ft. to deep. Found in on-location testing at Pearl i think, as the Bureau of Ordnance did not want to test it them selfs in the US.
