View Full Version : Harbor attacks in GWX 1.03

I get into SH3 for awhile then put it away for awhile. Right now I'm very into it.

Last time I was I'd just installed the first Grey Wolves and was using SH3Gen. Seeing all those nice targets in British harbors drew me in and I made some runs into Ewe.

Of course, I knew nothing about the mines or sub nets. LOL!

So using 1.03 now I really have no interest in going into any harbors as I play dead is dead and don't feel like dying right now.

But I'm just wondering if anyone does go into the harbors in England using GWX 1.03.

Is there any way to get through mines and subnets other than luck?

Staying on the surface? (This doesn't sound very tempting to me)
Using the Ops. scope?
Sailing at 10 or 11 m instead of full peri depth?
Anything?

If it's just not really doable at 100% realism, I'm fine with that. Just wondering.

Well, I would say trial and error perhaps. In reality both sides would get intelligence reports on the mines and nets (and of course change them around some). That's not possible, so just be careful. Go really slowly. If you hit a net at slow speed you should be ok. If you hit a mine at any speed, well... goodbye :)

strictly a deep water subsimer any water less than 100 meters I have learned to stay clear of:smug:

Me too. There doesn't seem to be a lack of good targets in deep waters. Just figured if it's doable, I should do it sometime.

I've made a few harbour raids in GWX 1.03 and as long as you abide by what's in my harbour infilktration tutorial you should be OK.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96843&highlight=harbour+tutorial

No gurantees though if you aren't careful you can get very dead very quickly. It does take some planning and I usually visit the habour once or twice and do a recce before going in.

Tobruk was fun one night where I managed to sink everything in the harbour using torps and gun, including the patroling DD and corvette outside.

I haven't come accross mines, but I've discovered that in order to get past nets I order rig for silent when I come near the harbors so I juuuust tap the net, then surface for just enough time to get over the net, then back to PD. Doesn't get much easier, and if there are no warships near by, I resurface inside the harbor and pound away with deck gun and torpedoes alike.

i raided loch ewe. but not without problems...

first srtuck a mine this coused havy flooding, diesel engine destroyed, fuel tank leaking,4 crew members dead and hull down to 25%. :damn:

then passing a sub net whitout any dammage and going back to PD.
thinking i was safe i struck another subnet :shifty: (luckaly at 1 knot) passed it and torpedoed the patrolling trawler. reaching the harbour i torpedoed a nelson, fiji and a hunt I destroyer. out of torpedo's i returned surfaced and made it back home

All I know that if it's 1944 and you have 1.03, expect to take a beating. So far I haven't survived a harbor attack after 1943. Maybe I need to visit a more remote harbor . . .

For SH3 Gen users its kind of hard not to stay :-? . I always keep geting missions to raid harbours.

The info in SH3 Gen is not obligatory. Were you to follow this every time you would spend your career carrying out harbour raids....and how realistic would that be ? :hmm:

FYI, I use use SH3 Gen myself and rate it highly but I seldom if ever carry out it's recommendation :nope:

these brit harbours are quite easy to raid... mayby the next thing il do is a surfaced harbour raid (scapa flow with 6 DD's) :hmm:

You might wanna give Dunkirk a try during Operation Dynamo

March 26 - June 3 1940 in GWX

There are 2 huge passenger liners in harbor....and some heavy transports

I guarantee it will be a challenge!

I'm in Murmansk July'44 right now...well inside the harbor, still undetected, with 2m below my keel at schnorkel-depth!...
The infiltration was a breeze. Only 1 DD and a tugboat doing patrols in the area...both have long gone back through the channel, towards the open ocean.
No subnets or mines!...at least, not that I can tell.
E-power and Oxygen are at nearly 100%.

Plenty of targets: 2 destroyers, one small tanker, 4 small merchants, 3 fishing-boats, all stationary in harbor.
I'm slowly nearing my point of attack, and will get the 2 warships and 1 heavy-armed merchant first.

Capt. Lehman and his GWXers put in a lot of work into bringing the harbours into life. It would be sad if everyone was as cautious as I am and stayed away from ports.

Thanks to the harbour raiders and their reports we get a deeper appreciation to the work of the GWXers!

Well done chaps (modders & raiders alike). :D

But my advice to non-suicidal Kaleuns still stands: Stay outta da shallow water!!!
