I just started a new career patrol and decided to use the stock 1.2 radar (got SD & SJ installed), approaching honshu I get the radar contact aircraft spotted long range message, I check the map (yeah ok Im a wuss and use map contacts) sure enough theres the plane, so I go to the bridge and scan the horizon with the binocs and I dont see it so I dont think my watchmen spotted it, next I check the SJ radar scopes and its not there, perfect....sounds like the SD picked it up.
Next I get a message telling me ships were spotted on radar and I go to the SJ scopes to check and sure enough there they are...so far the radar seems to work for me, of course this is a new career so there haven't been a lot of variables yet but so far, so good.

I have never been able to turn on the radar.
I flick the switch, nothing.
The icon to turn on the radar is disabled (greyed out).

UIs there a trick to getting the radar operational?

Thanx

Well if your patrol is before "43" your boat only has SD and SD does "NOT" use the scopes, they are for the SJ, so you woulden't be able to turn anything on.
Not knowing what you've got I really coulden't say much more.

Mine is also broke with v1.2. I've completely reinstalled the game because it developed some horrific career-ending bug. Upon loading v1.2, broke radar.

The radarbutton is disabled until you install the SJ radar on your sub. the SJ radar are for picking up surface contacts. The SD radar for picking up Aircraft contacts. There is no scope/display for the SD radar. Or on off button for that matter. However when you install the SJ radar, the on/off button is supposed to turn both radars on and off AFAIK.

As to the OP, the radars was broken for me in v1.2 untill I installed the Flavoured to Taste mod. That is, the SJ radar worked, but only whilst heading 271 through 89 degrees north.

Why do you think its broke...I mean to say what is your situation? boat, year, equipment installed ect.

I think the broken part some are talking about, is the fact that post patch, its no longer rotating on the radar mast pole up top. Worked fine pre-patch 1.2. No longer has rotation animation for any version of the radar after patch 1.2. However radar does work.

I find it starnge that with a fresh install and 1.2 patch my radar seems to work ok but it does not for others...perhaps there is some othere variable here affecting peoples radar.

No probs here. I use FTT mod and have both SG and SJ Radars installed.

Kudos to the guys working on radar...but my thoughts are "is it really broke" or is there something else that screws it up for some people and not for others?

Wish mine did :-? , and yes my radar is on  . This happens with and without mods and even a fresh install with patch 1.2 applied. Uninstall and install patch 1.1, wow it works. Uninstall and install patch 1.2 fresh. Wow, It doesnt work anymore, the rotation animation that is.
Not a game breaker problem, just annoying is all, the fact it worked fine pre-patch but not post patch for me. Wonder if it has something to do with the graphics fix they did to allow for FSAA or something? Any ideas? Using an NVidia 7800 GS AGP 8X

I really think the problem lays with the fact that both SJ and SD radars don't work independantly because they are still shown to be in place inside the sub even though they are not installed. In SH3 the Radar slot was shown as a blank location until the radar was available and installed.

Now because of that both SD and SJ radars should be seperate units and work as seperate units which is not the case in SH4 That's why it doesn't work and should be corrected in the next patch in my opinion.

if you are using an un modded version of sh4, get a radar contact and then turn to a heading of 180 degrees and you will notice that your contact has dissapeared. The turn to a course of 0 degrees and presto you get a contact again

I know all about that...tried it, works fine, never lost any contacts...and none of the mods I am using have anything to do with radar.
Im in a Tambor, 43 with SD & SJ installed and the radars seem to work fine...so far.
But what Im getting at is maybe there is some other variable within the game that is causing the radar problems? Others have stated that their radar works ok, so why is it working for some and not all?
Maybe I haven't came across the variable in question so Im ok, as soon as I do then mine wont work. I guess what Im saying is "maybe" the radar itself is not broke and the problem is elsewhere in the files.

Well after a marathon game session it seems I now have the 90-270 bug, bummer
Strange I diden't have a problem the first go round. :hmm:

For me I just didn't get the fact I needed to "buy" the radar while on base (by clicking the model submarine) in order to be able to turn it on. :D When I finally got that, it's worked great for me ever since.

BTW, does using the radar give away your position at all?

Stock behavior with the 1.2 patch: the SD radar (air search) no longer picks up ships. Neither, for that matter, does it pick up planes. It just don't work! The radar sets inside the boat and the radar buttons on the toolbar aren't active until you install the SJ radar (surface search). You can get that in June of 1942, if you have a Gato and are based in Pearl Harbor. That picks up ships but not planes, but there is still the problem with heading. Imagine a line of latitude, running directly from East to West. If your boat's bow is pointed at the line or any north of that line, the SJ radar picks up boats fine. If it's even 1 degree south of that line, the SJ radar picks up nothing.

I think the most recent version of Flavored To Taste includes a work-around for both problems, by making the SJ radar available from the beginning of the war and setting it to pick up both planes and ships regardless of your heading. This both allows you to pick up the things you're supposed to pick up, and also let's you manually turn it off when you get to a friendly port.

You are entirely correct Quillian. Both in description of problem and solution. The solution is admittedly a work around, and for the hard-sim crew not entirely perfect. But it do work.

That is enough for me :)

Mine did. I was working on a couple of test missions which involved spawned aircraft and it picked them up no problem. I think the issue is that they moved the minimum height for picking up an aircraft to about 500m or so - but a lot of the aircraft in the stock game are set to fly at 300 - 400m or so which makes it seem broken when it isn't.

Thats my findings anyway. don't know how accurate they are but I definately have been able to pick up aircraft on the SD with 1.2.

I think the issue may only occur if you have the SD radar installed, but not the SJ radar, and/or only occur in the campaign. The first thing I did when I started a new campaign from 1941 was install an SD radar. I have yet to pick up one single plane on the radar, mainly because there seems to be no way to turn it on. The panels on the sub, as has already been stated, seem to be part of the SJ radar, which isn't available on my campaign yet, and the on/off button on the UI remains greyed out. The only workaround I've found is Redwine's mod which, essentially, turns the SD radar into an SJ radar, which feels too much like a cheat.
