View Full Version : Ignoramous newb ?'s GWX and SH3commander
Hello, I think I'm beginning to get on peoples nerves here about this topic, hopefully this will be my last post concerning this.
1. I have the gwx files on a disc. (.exe, 103.exe, bin-1, bin-2, bin3, bin4 and bin5)
2. What should I do next. I can move them on my desktop, but I dont know how to make a folder and put them in there.
3. After I make a folder, where do I put it? I'm guessing c: programfiles:ubisoft:sh3.
4. Then I run the GWX.exe
5. I have sh3 patched to 1.4b and some game saves and a profile in my game. Do I need to completely uninstall/install again? before running this?
What files should I d/l for sh3 commander?
then, what do I do to get them to work. I'm guessing I put them on my desktop and then do the same thing as I did for GWX.
Thanks for anyhelp, the how to section isnt written for illiterate folks like myslef. I really need someone to walk me through this and if you have time.... haaaalp!

Place all the bin files and the exe in one folder then follow the intructions below.
Installing the Grey Wolves Expansion
Basic Installation
You must install The Grey Wolves Expansion (GWX) over a CLEAN, UNMODIFIED installation of
Silent Hunter III patched to Version 1.4b, or any earlier GWX version if you are installing patch version
1.03 or later since the installer will only install GWX into your Silent Hunter III installation folder. The
following instructions may apply to you depending on how you have modified Silent Hunter III:
1. REMOVE any installed SH3 Commander files (if you use SH3 Commander) by pressing the
"Rollback SH3" button from within SH3 Commander
2. DISABLE all activated modifications if you use the "Jonesoft Generic Mod Enabler" (JSGME).
You cannot use JSGME to install GWX, but you can use JSGME to activate other modifications
after you install GWX
3. ENSURE the only change (if any) to a CLEAN, UNMODIFIED installation of Silent Hunter III
is an earlier version of GWX; GWX patches are cumulative starting with GWX V1.03.
GWX instituted cumulative patches for several reasons:
• Cumulative patches are the standard in the game industry
• The GWX team does not have enough people to support multiple versions of GWX
• Players who have not yet downloaded or patched GWX will only need to download one patch
file rather than two or three
GWX and SH3 Commander
The GWX Team recommends using the latest SH3 Commander, a Jonesoft freeware product that allows
players to edit many of the parameters and settings for a player’s career in Silent Hunter III, for the best
Silent Hunter III experience. SH3 Commander is available at http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software
### Important Notice to users of SH3 Commander ###
Jonesoft has made available updated files to ensure compatibility between GWX and SH3 Commander..
Please note that:
• you MUST install these files if you ARE playing GWX
• you must NOT install these files if you are NOT playing GWX
Take the following steps to configure SH3 Commander for GWX:
• Ensure you are running SH3 Commander R2.6 or greater, as prior releases are not supported.
• Download http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/GWX102+Cfg4SH3Cmdr.zip and extract the
contents into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder. Refer to the readme.txt in the zip file for more
detailed information.
The GWX team suggests you set the following SH3 Commander options to get the most enjoyment
while running with GWX:
• Select “Use historic U-boat availability dates” when playing a career in the 30th/33rd flotilla
• Select “Set number of days spent in base” to 55 when playing a career in the Far East
• Do not use the “Grey Wolves 24 hour” fatigue model
• Do not use the “Combined Ship Pack” add-on
Any more questions just fire away:up:
OK I'll print this out and give it a go.
What sh3 commander files should I use?
mr chris

You need to D/L and install this SH3 commander file if you are going to use Commander with GWX.
• Download http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX...fg4SH3Cmdr.zip (http://www.users.on.net/%7Ejscones/GWX/GWX102+Cfg4SH3Cmdr.zip) and extract the
contents into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder. Refer to the readme.txt in the zip file for more
detailed information.
IF YOU GET LOST WITH THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS TRY THIS.
:Place all Bin Files and EXE in one folder.
:Install SH3 and patch to 1.4
:Open the folder with the GWX BIN FILES and the Exe and double click on the Exe to install GWX.
:Install the GWX patch 1.03
:Install SH3 Commander 2.7
:Install the GWX commander files
:Run the game to set up the SH3 folder in My documents.
:Then in future you can load up the game via Sh3 Commander.

You guys are really amazing!!!
I'm pretty sure that this question had been asked (and answered) many times before ... but still ... you answered it with detailed instruction on how to do it.
My hat off to you guys
Thanks.
Thanks a million x a million.
I got GWX to work! I feel like bill gates or something, not as nerdy tho. :smug:
I dont think I've installed gwx103.exe yet. I put all gwx.exe, bin-1 through bin-5, and 103.exe in a folder and ran it. It works!!! But I didnt run 103.exe. I think my next mission will be to run that and I should be set with the gwx files.
Now on to SH3 Commander
It looks like I need 2 files...
1. SH3 commander 2.7
2. Gwx102Cfg4sh3cmdr.zip
then I should be good to go.
My first impressions of gwx are ... this is brilliant! You guys are a awesome. I love that I can now be escorted out of harbors, like in real life. SH3 must be the pinnical in submarine simulations. Everything I could dream of asking for is in there. I'm interested in sh3 commander, I think it's there to help with crew management. This will be a big help with conrtolling endurance and watches.
alright! YOu guys rule the 7 seas! thank you!thankyou!

thanks for the help!

Hi Chris, Jim, Kpt and JSc. Now please don't get mad at me, but I want to upgrade my GWX, SH3Commander and SH3Gen and you know how I misunderstand. I basically understand everything mentioned above for "single" installs; but I have multiple installs.
I know I have to Roll-back each one before doing anything, correct?
I also know that I should remove any mods that are installed using JSGME.
I have the GWX folders(Dec 23 version)
I have the original Commander (one for each installed game)
I have original Gen (one for each installed game)
Now, if I understand correctly, I should not bother upgrading GWX with 1.02 because it is in GWX 1.03, correct? So all I do is put the GWX1.03 in the GWX folder(s) - Ubisoft/silent Hunter III/folder and install.
Then I update each Commander to version 2.7 or do I just delete the originals and install 2.7 and route them to each multple install.
Same with the Commander. Delete them and install the 2.7 version and route them to each multiple install of any SH3 install version.
Then I know I have to do something with the Commander that relates to each GWX install. I have the GWX102cfgsh3cmdr. What should I do here.

Hi Chris, Jim, Kpt and JSc. Now please don't get mad at me, but I want to upgrade my GWX, SH3Commander and SH3Gen and you know how I misunderstand. I basically understand everything mentioned above for "single" installs; but I have multiple installs.
Rob have a look at this earlier post of mine regarding multiple installs
The way to do multiple installation is simple
1. Install a clean version of SH3 in the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\SH3
2. Patch it to 1.4b
3. Copy the whole folder and paste it whenever you want the new installation to be. After that rename it to whatever you like. Let's say GWX.
4. Now put the multiSH3 into the GWX folder and run it. When asked put GWX as the default directory where your careers will be saved.
5. After all this install GWX in the GWX folder, make a shortcut to the desctop and you're ready to play.
6. Now you can install the SH3Cmd 2.7 including all the extra Cfg Files (if needed)
7. After the installation is complete you right-click onto the desktop icon. You click on properties and where it say target you type "C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX. Now this is the example of my SH3Cmd that will check the files in the My Documents\GWX folder that is generated by the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX installation. After that this particular installation of SH3Cmd is linked to that installation of SH (GWX in this case).
I would suggest you do a different installation of SH3Cmd for each different installation of SH you have. That way you don't get the SH3Cmd confused and you don't mess up things.
Also I would suggest to leave the clean patched version of SH3 in the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\SH3 untouched as that way you can always copy it and paste it to add new mods. If you want to make new installations always copy and paste this folder and DO NOT USE the Installer of SH3 again (at least not for as long as the game is already installed)
I know I have to Roll-back each one before doing anything, correct?
That's correct
I also know that I should remove any mods that are installed using JSGME.
That's correct
Now, if I understand correctly, I should not bother upgrading GWX with 1.02 because it is in GWX 1.03, correct? So all I do is put the GWX1.03 in the GWX folder(s) - Ubisoft/silent Hunter III/folder and install.
All patches are commulative. What you need to apply a patch is a CLEAN version of GWX.
Then I update each Commander to version 2.7 or do I just delete the originals and install 2.7 and route them to each multple install.
Same with the Commander. Delete them and install the 2.7 version and route them to each multiple install of any SH3 install version.
You need one version of SH3Cmd for EACH working version of the game you have. You can link them to your installation via the /l switch as indicated in my quoted post on multiple installs.
Then I know I have to do something with the Commander that relates to each GWX install. I have the GWX102cfgsh3cmdr. What should I do here.
You need to add the GWX-ONLY Cfg SH3Cmd files into C\Program Files\SH3Cmd\Cfg folder and overwrite the original (generic) files.
I hope it is clearer now. If you still have problems give me a shout

Thanks a bunch Mel, you are a life saver. I thought I was correct in everything I assumed, but I wasn't sure about thst CMDR cfg. I ONLY do that to the CMDR that deal with any GWX extensions, correct?
I was looking around and I think I saw that CMDR must be version 2.7 before I can add the cfg file mentioned above.

Rob if you update GWX to 1.03 (it's really good and you will like it. Trust me ;) ) you need the 1.03 Cfg files for SH3Cmd (they're the same as for the 1.02 version by the way). You can get them from here http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/download.html (GWX 1.02+ Cfg files for SH3 Commander)

I get the impression that I'm only supposed to changed CMDR to version 2.7 if I'm using GWX and NOT SH3 installs and then add the new 1.02 cfg patch
Now, relating to SH3Gen latest version, I can just copy the files into each of my SH3 Gen installs for each game I have, including the one for GWX, correct?

That is correct. SH3Cmd 2.7 is the optimum version of use with GWX.
Now, relating to SH3Gen latest version, I can just copy the files into each of my SH3 Gen installs for each game I have, including the one for GWX, correct?
You don't really need different SH3Gen installs. The program is totally stand-alone and doesn't interact with the installations. My suggestion would be to have a single SH3Gen installation and use it with any SH/GWX version you play. After all the only thing SH3Gen is doing is to access and read your save game. If you need more info on that let me know.
