On a recent patrol I stumbled accross a small convoy on the way to my patrol area.

We called it in and Pac responded "Good job X Attack convoy X".

So we did it was a Huge liner escorted by three destroyers. We decieded to attack the liner first. Fired three torps at her just to make sure. The first was a kill, second was a dud, and third knocked a hole in her bow and she went down fast.

Being a "carefull" and "experienced" skipper we crashed dived to avoid the attack by the DD's and slinked away from the scene.

Later we surfaced to report the sinking and continued on to our patrol area. After completeing that patrol I checked the log to see what other orders that Pac had in store for us.

To my dismay it read "Patrol = complete" "Attack convoy = incomplete". :damn:

Okay fine I guess we should have stayed risked the ship and lives and prosecuted the DD's. :hmm:

My question is will we get further orders or should we just return to base and get our butts chewed out ?

I got the same orders and saw I hadn't completed the "Attack the convoy" - objective when I arrived in my designated patrol zone. Sank a few more ships and I got a "Completed" for the convoy objective too.

Hrm maybe the orders should read "Attack A convoy" instead of attack "the" convoy.

Okie I got plenty of fuel and torps left Ill see what happens thanks.

Sounds to me like the opportunity objective of "Attack Convoy" is like "Engage Enemy Merchant Ships", in that it requires you to sink a certain tonnage of shipping. The Engage order requires about 10K tons, and since a huge liner is over that, I'm guessing about 20K. I could be wrong; this is just based off Daft's experience, and the tonnage could be more. However, wouldn't 20K have been an insanely good total for a single patrol during the war?

Well I ran accross another convoy sunk a few and got credit.

So yes it seems to be tonnage based.

I ran into a large task force style convoy with those small 1-2000ton passenger carriers at the back, I got the orders to attack the convoy, I sunk all of the passenger carriers (about 10 all up I think!) and I think I might have got one destroyer which was getting too close.

I still didn't get the objective completed though, I expected maybe 3-5 ships down and I'd be complete but no, I ran out of torpedoes.

I think if it's a task force when you report contact and you're ordered to engage them, you need to take out the destroyers. The liner counts as a merchant and only warships counts towards the mission objective. The exception is if you're told specifically to take out the troop carriers or tankers that sometimes travel with task forces. Same with the troop convoys, if the order is just to engage taskforce then only warships count.

I can't remember exactly what I was told, but something about re inforcing a large garrison or something, I'd assumed the troops were the ones to be hit.

Hrm... call me silly but thats a tad counter intuitive.

After tall the escorts are there to ... well escort the "precious" resources. :hmm:

He may be right. When I encountered the second task force I took out a DD and was credited with mission complete.

Isn't it a little crazy that none of this information is in the SH4 manual? How are we supposed to know the amount of tonnage to be sank and such. Thanks for the post though, I have been searching for the last 30 min to try to find someone with the same problem. I have sailed all over the ocean, refueled twice and sunk 85k of tonnage. Most of my tonnage is merchants so I guess I need to find some destroyers. I had the exact same situation, reporded task force and didn't get the destroyers. At least now I know what to look for! Thanks.
