I was playing SH4 the other night and I was thinking to my self "this is just a prettied up version of SH3 with a different targeting system". Don't get me wrong I am actually OK with that and find it perfectly acceptable and knew that going in when I purchased it. What I didn't think about was just how different the theaters are (Pac vs Atlantic). I think the Pac is so much more interesting. Sh3 was great depiction of the war in the atlantic and convoy raiding but aside from that there wasn't as much variability.
In particular true naval surface activity was lacking for the most part. The number of task forces travel too-from was limited and the chance of being in the right place at the right time was even more so. This is also a pretty accurate representation of the conflict at the time. Sh4 on the otherhand gets to take advantage of the characteristics of the pacific conflict where there is substantially more naval activity. One of the biggest differences I have noticed is the number of task force sitings I recieve. That and the more intimate nature of the geography (as opposed to the vast expanse of the atlantic) makes for a much more interesting experience.
Along these lines I am thrilled that I just recieved a report of a "large" task force heading my way in the straits heading south from the Celebes sea towards Java. I can't wait to see what is coming this way. The only bad news is that I am in a S-class (S-33) and speed and number of tubes is limited. I guess I will have to pick out the best target and send 4 fish its way:D
