Hi All,

I have been a Silent Hunter series player since the beginning. These games (even the last prematurely IMHO released SH4) have always been not only great fun but also source of a thrill for me. I used to play them for years and with time discovered that they were a lot more complicated than I originally thought. And that felt good...

Right now, after being a bit dissapointed with the Wolves Of The Pacific I am in the middle of the German Campaign in my VIIC. I run Silent Hunter 3 patched to 1.4 and with GWX on top. My questions are:
- Do the destroyesrs have a limited number of depth charges on board? If yes than where can I find some info on this topic?
- What is the minimum distance for a torpedo to arm it's warhead? Do all the torpedos have the same arming distance?
- Will sending one ping to determine my sub's depth under keel attract a nearby destroyer in passive search mode? Does AI hear this at all?

Hopefully, Your answers will make the Silen Hunter 3 even "deeper" and more "rich" in content...

Cheers!

Hi,

1. DD's / Escorts have limited depht charges, I guess it was about 100+

2. the minimum range of a Warhead to arm itself is 300 meters.

3.dont know about pinging would effect the AI sensors

The answer to all the above is yes.... as to the minimum torpedo arming distance I can't really help.. the closest I've fired at was 350 metres.. and they went fine.

I do believe that escorts can detect your sonar ping since they are always listening.

What you need to keep in mind with the minimum arming distance of torpedoes is that if a target is moving towards you, ie. closing the range, then you should give your torpedo a buffer range since a target could easily close to less than 300 meters before a torpedo arms itself.

just one small addition to this discussion - im pretty sure the number of depth charges the enemy carries with them is directly proportioned to your difficulty settings.

only thing is i cant remember which way

it was either the higher the realism the more limited their DC load was

or

it was the lower your realism the more limited their DC load was.

one or the other

As far as the number of depth charges carried by escorts, I don't know exactly how many but I have been depth charged with nearly 150 by a destroyer. Some destroyers will carry over 200 DC.

Corvettes seem to run out of DCs at about 100.

I tried to keep on attacking a convoy north of Cape Verde islands. One corvette ran out of depth charges. But I ran out of torpedoes before the other escorts ran out of DCs :shifty:
