phantom ships?

this happens a lot for me. got a ship target box on the chart so i set a course for it. nothing in the periscope so i surface and nothing there either, and i'm dead center in the box itself:damn: . this common for anyone else?

Depending on how far away you are, you have to set a course ahead of the contact and hope for the best. Usually, approaching directly at a contact on your map won't work unless you're very close.

i've come at them from every which way. they'd be like over 10K yrds when i approach and i maneuver to get a good bead on it and nothing there when i'm in range. even happened with one of my own ships:-?

Happened to me once before on two occasions within the same mission. Strange indeed, one was with perfect weather. Just nothing there.

How far away was the reported contact? And how long ago? When you get a contact report 100 miles away, if you sail directly to the last reported position he'll be long gone by the time you arrive. I use the ruler tool to project a course for the contact, plot a course to a point on that line 30-50 miles down it, then go to full or flank spped until I intercept the line. I then reduce speed to 1/3 and cruise back up the line toward the reported contact position.

I'll find them about 95% of the time.

I do this as well as I go to periscope depth and see if I can get them on sonar. You can get contacts on sonar LONG before you'll ever be able to see them. so I surface and run standard ahead and then go periscope depth when I think im getting close... Do this until you fine tune his position and then blow them out of the water.

Why these are detected by sonar I dont know.

i'd goto 70' to listen for engine noises via hydraphones with my engines stopped then surface to get closer repeatedly, so i don't see how it coulda moved off all that far:hmm:
