Can I join with my VIIB? :88)
Maybe I can get a IX for christmas 1939.
I was asking myself only a few days after that type II thread showed up "how long before the big boys get hissy and and pouty and make their own treehouse".
Me, I'm already in the club. Type IXC, U-519, 1941.

Just left port last night in my new IXC after trading in my old but reliable VIIB. We've not even done any sea trials yet, so once we get some water under the keel, we'll be doing some angles and dangles, to get a feel for what she can do. Should be interesting as this is my first time in this boat.
As a going away present my VIIB gave me over 90,000 tons on our last partol. Pretty tough to do in a Lucky 7. GWX, 92% real.

Well the convoy I ran into had only a Black Swan and a Corvette. So sent the BS to the bottom and sunk the corvette with gun fire. I had 2 fish a stern and 1 forward. I had of100 deck gun ammo. This convoy is in early 40-41, and had 5-6 C3's and a 3-4 large merchants. So I aim under the wheelhouse of the C3's and sunk like 4 and with a help of a fish sunk 3 large merchants. :smug: Then was heading out two planes tried to bomb me but I got under and sunk one medium tanker with the final two fish. This was the first patrol I got 100K GWX or vanilla.   So I was very happy.
I might add a little story with Bernard that damaged my U-boat on the same patrol. I was in a convoy and had sunk a Southampton class and a couple of merchants and cargos. Bernard thought he would like to take her topside.:damn: :shifty: Needless the British welcomed me with open arms and guns.:hmm: I barely got her under :dead: and we fired Bernard out of the torpedo tubes as a diversion.

Erich Hofmann and the crew of U-66 have now come to rest in the U-Boot Valhalla.:dead:
After having left France in early September we noticed that the fuel consumption was to high for any longer patrol time outside the US so after some ships sunk we refuelled at U-461(i think it was).
To make a long story short, the increasing harassments from radar equipped escorts and planes made it clear that the second happy times was soon to be over. After having intercepted a convoy in late October U-66 attacked and sunk one Whale factory ship and a Liberty freighter. But due to depth keeping problems when running anything slower than 3 knots we were subsequently attacked by several escorts.
U-66 was struck at 236m 19:16 29 October 1942 by several depth charges. All hands lost.:damn::damn:
The Malfunctions and sabotage option in SH3Cmd really makes it harder to survive when you get this kind of problems at the heat of battle. Harder, but more realistic in my opinion.
Guess it's back in 1939 again to enjoy some happy times for a while.:D

Oberleutnant Bernhard (random names *shrug*) Trossen
Sailing a Type IXb out of Wilhelmshaven from March 1940 onward
1st patrol, to gibraltar, never got there sunk several ships north of Ireland, then intercepted a convoy heading west south of Ireland, bagged me a large merchant and 2 whaling factories ran out of fish, visited Bessel at Vigo to restock
2nd patrol, back to willi, found another convoy south of Ireland, hurt that pretty badly, only 1 dd escort, and an auxilliary cruiser, sunk that as well, bagged me yet another whaling factory ship, life is going to be good for the whales, got home just in time for things to get messy in Norway
3rd patrol, Joined the efforts of the suface ships in Norway, bagged me 3 tribal DDs and a Fiji cruiser just sitting there in some fjjord, unfortunately the flyboys had already sunk all the stationary troopships :-?, then on the way out I ran into another whaling factory, what is it with these things, that went to the bottom for the whales to laugh at, then I ran into a taskforce in heavy fog, managed to make them steam nearly over me at 20 kts, had something really big pass right in front of my bow at 700 meters, fired a full spread, 3 hits, couldn't even see what it was, just that it sounded big, during evasion of angry DDs I got the message "she's going down", turns out I managed to sink HMS Illustrious with hydrophone only shot . Went back to Wilhelmshaven because out of fish and crummy weather, got a Knight's Cross for that. I also got myself a Black Whale on the Conning tower because of the whaling ships, If I manage to sink one more I'll get me a White Whale :D
"...and if his chest had been a mortar he would have burst his heart upon it.." -from Moby Dick
4th patrol, after some time on a propaganda tour set out from Wilhelmshaven to patrol AN84 (yes they're evacuating Dunkirk and all that but please, why not send the type II guys my boat's far to big for the southern North Sea) ran into a mine :damn: both periscopes and hydrophone wrecked, I'm blind and deaf underwater... also lost most of my diesel, managed to save the sub though, limped back to Wilhelmshaven for repairs. ah well...

Heh, let me get a little more practice on convoys first! I have a feeling I may not survive the retribution from my exploits. Last report was 200+ meters and sinking fast with heavy flooding, front torp compartment floodin, front crew qtrs flooding, hydrophone and radio damaged. Emergency ballast blowing is slowing my descent, but not stopping it.:o

You could look that up on uboat.net, but the real answer varies on year of war, and intent of patrol. Sometimes those external stores were used for parts. Outfiting a snorkel also took room away from storing torpedo's. By late war, they didnt carry their whole payload capacity becuse reloading external stores was near suicidal due to the air cover.

Today march 8 1943 the U-Boat U-198 of type IXD2 was lost after a dearing convoy attack under heavy fog conditions in sector DH34 on the west coast of Africa.
After attacking and sinking a large cargo Kaleun Canovaro was forced to bring his u-boat "Das Monster" to safe depth but only at depth of 150 meters the u-boat was heavily damaged in the first depth charge attack and imploded, killing all men instantly.
Oberleutnant z S Canovaro and his brave men met their fate after 27 patrols. They sank over 620.000 ton of enemy shipping.
They served the Fatherland and they will not be forgotten.
:nope:
_______________________________
64 years later off the coast of Africa, a special equipped diving craft of the Dutch navy found a heavily rusted piece of what appeared to have been a German U-boat radio.
Back at home, the captain wipes the sand and rust off the metal plate, and incraved on the plate he finds this reading:
"Kaleun Canovaro will return!"

Harder fired his last four torps from 1800m and hit with three. The mighty ship sank within ten minutes. Only a handful of survivors, war is hell.

yeah diving time is shocking, you have about 1 trillionith of a second to decide whether you should dive when aircraft are spotted or stay on the surface and fight it out. Any longer and your have no choice but to stay on the surface.:)

Diving time is not a major requirement for me as I am only on the surface for air and at night for faster travel. Was more looking at the fact that it has a faster running time, longer distance and more torps.

Oh yep i get what you mean, i haven't played that way since playing "Wolves at War" nearly 2 years ago now, especially when getting out of the bay of biscay. Our orders were to surface at night and submerge during the day.

I started my first career in IX about 18 months ago, version IUB 1.02, with type IXB U-123. 9 patrols from Sep.1939 to Aug 1940, and then aborted.
My first career in GWX 1.03, I used IXC U-129, 4 patrols and sunk by planes near AM 52:damn:
Now I started a new career with VIIB U-48, from Sep.1939. Until June 1940, 5 patrols accomplished:rock:,sinking 4 Nelsons and 2 Revenges:arrgh!: Planning to buy a new IXC in 1941, and a XXI in 1944.

OMG i got pounded last nite! friggin escorts :damn: First pounding of GWX i have experinces and it aint nice :D well yeah it was good fun gaming wise and for a moment there i thought i might just beable to slip away. I got blasted where i started sinking, slowly sinking then we hit the bottom at 220 metres, turn of motors and started major repairs. Everything good for a few minutes, we still could have a chance, then I heard that dreadful PING, PING! i could do nothing but just sit there and wait for the depth charges.... BOOM!
Now on eternal patrol....
Too bad , Kiwi --(caps off).
I'm limping away from a similar. But think that investment in a strong repair crew saved my butt. Will add another fixer upper mechanic (have 2 now plus one officer) when I'm in port.
It was good to see how experienced crew worked in all compartments while damage control crew took care of the worst damage and flooding.

Just returned to Lorient after 9 day patrol. Had the bazonks pounded out of me by two very nasty destroyers. Quite a bit of flooding and torp tubes damaged. Shipyard engineers said I had a 67 percent hull integrity. Managed to sink 53523 BRT. Inching toward the tonnage millionaire's club. :D

I think all U-Boats have got their own spirit. Some of them are very successfull, some get sunk during the first patrol. And some of them are immortal and mystic - like Type IXB U-123 U-Boat.:)
Just look into those facts:
* 12 patrols and over of 220 000 tonns sunk during the whole war.
* Scuttled in August,1944.
* After lying on the bottom for a whole year, the U-Boat is raised by French forces in 1945 and becomes a submarine of the French Navy.
*Another 14 years of service until 1959.
*Nobody knows where the U-Boat is now,as it was decomissioned in 1959.
Will anybody say that this U-Boat is not of the very special kind?:D

The main thing is that no sources have any information regarding the fate of this U-Boat after 1959.But,itself,that is something really outstanding when U-Boat fights successfully the most horrible war in history, gets scuttled, rises again as Phoenix out of arches, and serves for another 14 years. The most special U-Boat of BDU OKM,I think, even more special than all other legends - U-47,U-48,U-96.
Man,modern nuclear submarines sink in calm waters without any action...and here such endurance after being depth charged, bombed, and after all scuttled.I have no words, just no words.:D  An example of outstanding quality of German arms manufacturers. Those who say, that Kalashnikov assault rifle is the most reliable warfare device in the world - make a great mistake.:D

Yes I agree, prevention is better than cure, but suppose you happen to get snagged by a hunter killer group or you attack a convoy and become made to pay for it? Some tips for the others would be helpful. I'm prepared to share mine, and I hope the other Type IX veterens would follow me.

Never came across HK's and I sail a lot down under as for convoys the most bad ass one's so to speak of sail from South Africa to Australia and back. I mainly target bottle neck areas yes I know a heck of a risk but it's worth it when you have a belly full of T-IV's & T-V's.

U-552 joining the club!:arrgh!:
Early '42 at the moment, lurking in the shallows around Freetown as we speak.
Our last two patrols we made the Med a very dangerous place for the Limeys. Passing the Gib is doable until mid '42. Set depth at 180, silent mode, 2knots and go read a book. Sunk a Nelson, Revenge and several Fiji/Dido/Southhampton in several engagements near Alexandria. My little crew is making a retutation for themselves :smug::arrgh!:
When I get back in Lorient I hope the letter of permission from BdU to check out the Black Sea is on my desk :hmm: Since I have to pass the canal in Turkey, they had to get permission first.
Some experience to share with the club (why else have one?);
- Sailing decks-awash (7/8m depth) shaves of precious divingtime when you are in dangerous waters.
- Dont bother spending renown on radar. Radar-warning however is vital, especially late war. Rader-warning will pick up destroyers and aircraft a lot sooner than sonar will. You dont have to dive at once, first check the direction and speed of the contactlines. A lot of times, destroyers dont go for you if you are more than 15/20 km away. If the contactline changes distance fast, it a plane.
Anybody know good huntinggrounds when Drumbeat starts, or information on port defences? Curacao for instance had subnets, but is deeper than 70 meters. Wich means you can just go under it. Subnets only go to 50 meter (same goes for Pantelleria).

On my 5th patrol with a Type IXB. Currently intercepting merchants westbound from Gibraltor. It can take a few days to use up all of those extra torps. Nice thing about Gibraltor is that even in late 41 there is almost no air cover; which helps a lot as this thing is as maneuverable as a tank.

U-107, 10th Flotilla – IXB Class
Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther
I decided to take a “detour” from my order to patrol the empty grid EJ59 to instead raid Loch Ewe and take on an Illustrious Fleet Carrier docked there. I successfully slipped past 9 warships and a large minefield in midday. My u-boat is positioned at a 170 degree angle, great position for my T II torpedoes with magnetic detonators. They are set at depths of 9, 9.3, 10, and 11 meters; I hope that this will account for the flooding that ensues from the first torpedo.
Firing tubes 1-4! Torpedo Impact! The 4 torpedoes were perfectly spread. Enemy unit destroyed! This will most likely be the last log of Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther as three enemy warships are furiously heading towards me. I pray that the sinking of this enemy aircraft-carrier will help keep the war turned in our favor…
Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther successfully evaded the enemy destroyers for 10 minutes before he was eventually discovered by a C-Class destroyer which pinged him and instantly destroyed his u-boat with side-launched depth charges. He will always be remembered as a hero and inspiration to other u-boat kapitans.
Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther sank over 656,000 tons of enemy shipping over 20 patrols.

The type II is nice, but you sure as hell can`t go to America in her unless a type IX takes you along as a "Dingy." I`m cruising the waters off the North American East coast in mid 1942, I have had a lot of good encounters with both merchants, and warships. I`m in U-109 a type IXB boat out of Lorient, 2nd Flotilla. Over the long haul, finding a milch cow, and resupplying is great, I`ve seen my share of action in her.
We are on our way home at the present time, having sunk two vessels before leaving, and being caught on the surface by a destroyer, that put two rounds in us before we could crash dive. Repaired the damage, and was able to go deep, and evade her, running silent, and creeping along at 2kts. Love it. Puts

What's America got that the Coast of Ireland doesn't?

hmm, good point. Now that I think about it, I can only use my deck about 15% of the time around Ireland due to terrible weather...

Just back from a long stint in the pacific with the U.S navy and on my 3rd patrol in U-49 , a type VIIB - once I return to port I will be transfering to 2nd flottila and back into my beloved "Sea Cow" :) .Atleast I'll be back in a more manouverable and deeper diving boat than a fleet boat ;)

Where are you hitting the tankers? It shouldn't take that much... Unless you're using stock of course.
