HI I'm pretty new to this but have mastered most of the 100% realism charting and navigation stuff however I have a couple of questions, which are probably really stupid but i just don't understand.
1) If I have set up a 90% perc approach to my targets track. The target is approaching from my Port(Left) - Why do I set my scope at O degrees and then set the AOB to STARBOARD? ? ? Surely if the target is going to be at 0 degrees when I fire neither port or starboard.
2) What the best way to read a targets bearing without watch officer etc - Currently I just take my "scope bearing to target" and add my current bearing (Minus 360 if the answer is above 360) ...Is this correct? Is there a better way?
Cheers guys - Great forum / community here

AOB is how the ship views you. So, if you were a (soon to be departed) lookout on your target's deck, where would you see the submarine? In the scenario you set, you would see a submarine on the starboard side, at a 90 degrees angle. So the AOB at the time your target crosses bearing 000 at 90 degrees angle to you is 90 starboard.
I am not sure I understand the second question. Just use the UZO or the binoculars. Once you spot the target, the number you see is its bearing. That is what I think you are calling "scope bearing to target". I don't understand what you mean "my current bearing". Do you mean your heading? Bearing is pretty simple: Just what the scope tells you. If you mean how you can calculate the target's course, that's a whole different story.

Fantastic - Thats it now it makes sense! I thought it was angle from "my" bow i.e my sub to target. That explains it ..thank you
As for question 2, You are correct I did mean the bearing I see in the scope. The bearing i'm after is the "Targets bearing to North". It's basically the 2nd solution provided in Wazzo's manual targetting and plotting guide (Section II - Manual Charting While Moving (http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/#Section II - Manual Charting While Moving))

I've never learned manual targetting, but that won't stop me from welcoming you to the Wonderful World of Subsim!

Enjoying it alot already - been playing SH3 for week or so...and it's just starting to come together (I went straight for GWX 100% realism) so in at the deep end!
But hey I'm just loving thye Navigation / Charting - Just started with completely submerged targeting and loving it!
BTW Thinking of getting SH4 - but heard some complaints - Any good?

SH4 is like that pretty girl that everyone thinks would be great to date. But secretly she hates herself and needs months of therapy (ie patching) to be functional in a relationship.:yep:
As for AoB, its a tough concept at first. But once you get it down, its a no brainer.
