View Full Version : Call me strange, but my favourite part of this game...

...is DAMAGE CONTROL! Seriously, what other part of the game creates so much suspense? Not knowing if you'll get the water out in enough time to level off your boat before crush depth... helplessly awaiting the escort to deliver the coup de grace while your valiant crew struggles to get the engines online.

Nail-biting.

'.. Destroyer comming nearer, .. almost above us now..'

It does rattle ones cage herr kaleun.

Not sure if I could pick out one most favorite thing. But on occasion I do like intercepting - blasting a DD-Escort, no they are not so much for tonnage but make for some of the best Explosions :yep:
Finding, and getting into position on a nice convoy with juicy targets in the center - then getting fish to them past the screening merchants is also quite cool.

I guess I just basic. My favorite bit is the last 20-30 minutes as we enter harbour, which I do at TCx1 having a drink. At dockside, I listen to the band.

Like all stupid sailors, once I'm in port I want to go out. Go figure .

Ditto. The tense moments of the pinging and silence before things start to go boom.

I love that feeling when you've basically blown off his bow... and he almost goes crash dive to the bottom at 30 odd knots!

My favourite parts are when I manage to hit a destroyer in the ammo pits and you see a chain reaction goes off, and when I make it back to base in one piece.

I'm with you Penelope, there's nothing more intense than listening to the pings. Then hearing depth charges in the water, Sir. And waiting to find out how close they really are.............

totally agree on the damage control - its like a game within the game. Such a totally different and nail byting aspect.

I hate unctrolled sinking and trying to stop flooding.
That said, thats the time I most forget i'm sitting in a seat infront of a computer - i'm totally immersed at that stage, doing everything I can to try and save the ship.

Can you imagine what it would have been like to be in a real U boat in WW2 and have DC damage and uncontrollable sinking? I have no doubt it would be up there as one of THE definitions of terror

i love the asdic :ping:

it freaks me out when i hear it
becouse THEN i am already worryed if i would make it or not.

most of the time i get havy damage and sink.
other times i can escape to 200m and head north (standard escape route for me becouse the destroyers come from the east south and west at you).

i am lucky when there is no bernard in my sub.
realy i always have sucsessful misions.

i once got a bernard engineer and i always died :damn:

Try Drifter's Longer Repair times mod if yer serious about more realistic repair times, that IRL could sometimes take days.

From what I understand GWX has altered repair times, though I haven't noticed much difference from the stock version.

Speaking about things some like and some don't, I must say I really like the much-woed standard damage model. It has an RPG feeling, to start with green crew, struggle to keep the boat working when half of the crew cannot be used, and then develop each of them so that, after some 5-6 patrols they work OK under pressure. It gives a strategic dimension to the crew micromanagement and when I give them medals and promotions I feel this is really of good use.

Returning from a rough patrol in the dark, fog and rain, then that first glimpse of the lighthouse off the coast... Is there a smell mod, maybe like a scratch and sniff thing where you could smell the grass and pine trees through the ocean mist from a few miles off the coast? Man, what those guys must have endured. My hat's off to veterans from all countries.

It's strangely satisfying to imagine having humiliated all the superior escort ships and their masters by routinely sinking a good sum of tonnage under their protection regardless of their innovative measures. That I have become the black plague of the sea and there are worried fat old men somewhere desperately trying to find a cure while I have personally crippled their supply of alcohol. :|\\

My fav has to be the satisfying sound of a Torpedo slaming into the side of... well just about anything.

The part I hate the most about all WW2 subsims... Knowing after playing SH3 and the problems i have with the torpedos in the Altantic i'm just going to have to deal with them again in the Pacific :damn::damn::damn::damn:

My favourite part of SH3 is sitting on the bridge with the console hidden and a cup of coffee by my keyboard in rough seas, especially when there are ships in sight. If they're friendly, often I'll calculate an intercept and see how close I can pass them with out course corrections for the last few KM. Nothing beats looking up at a big ship that's heaving in the swell less than 100 meters away. Nothing about the game is more immersive for me, except perhaps being pinged by a DD. But evading thier wrath is equally satisfying. I'm also a big fan of the 88mm deck gun, but I rarely get to use it.

For me it's that moment when a torpedo hits a target where I aimed it to hit it. In particular when I'm in a convoy attack situation and the target is really sweet like a big tanker or something like a battleship. :arrgh!:
