This could go under patrol stories or retarted escort AI.
Here goes nutin':rock:

I was patroling west of Luzon when I come across a task-force consisting of 3 CVs, 4 CVEs, 2 CAs, 4 CLs, 4 Chitose sea-plane tenders, 4 modern tankers, hordes of DDs. I closed in on the lead ship, Shokaku class CV and put 4 fish into her (sorry Cavalla:arrgh!: , don't mess with the sugar boats) Scratch one flat-top. I went deep to reload...

Meanwhile, the TF SLOWED to 3 knots...:huh: :dead:

...Torpedoes reloaded, back to periscope depth.:ahoy: I had no trouble lining up on the second ship, CV #2, as she was only going three knots. Four fish later and a gigantic explosion (fuel?) scratch 2 flat-tops.

...and the escorts??? did absolutely nothing!:down: :()1:

By 5 am, I'm reloaded and back in firing position. This time, CA, Maya... scratch one CA.

Number of depth charges dropped during encounter....Zero

Three ships, 65850 tons, and one Medal of Honor.

I sank a Mogami class cruiser (manual TDC, of course) off Lingayen in my S-18 class and was surrounded by six destroyers. Of course I went deep and ordered silent running... unfortunately had to leave the room and by the time I got back two minutes later I was done for.
From what I've read in S-boat war patrol reports, the Mk10 torpedo depth could not be reset without pulling it from the tube (reloads took five to seven minutes per tube). That, and the fact that firing a fish left a tell-tale disturbance from vented air (not to mention the diving officer had to quickly adjust for weight loss or the boat could breach).
There's much more to S-boat history that has yet to be told!

Yours, Mike

Try this in sim.cfg

[Visual]
Detection time=0.5 ;[s] min detection time.
Sensitivity=0.03 ;0.01 ;(0..1) at (sensitivity * max range) we have a double detection time.
Fog factor=1.0 ;[>=0]
Light factor=1.0 ;[>=0]
Waves factor=1.0 ;[>=0]
Enemy surface factor=400 ;[m2]
Enemy speed factor=15 ;[kt]
Thermal Layer Signal Attenuation=1.0

[Hydrophone]
Detection time=1 ;[s]
Sensitivity=0.06 ;0.03 ;(0..1)
Height factor=0 ;[m]
Waves factor=0.5 ;[>=0]
Speed factor=15 ;[kt]
Noise factor=1.0 ;[>=0]
Thermal Layer Signal Attenuation=3.0 ;[>0], 1 means no signal reduction, 3 equals signal reduction to 33%

Escorts all over me with this setting. :up:

I think I'm going to download the improved escorts. I'm under the impression they had good detection gear, they just didn't drop their DCs that deep, and they were small DCs.

Redwine's DC mod helps alot as well.

I don't want uber escorts, Japanese escorts weren't that good, but they weren't that bad either. (read Puffer's encounter with Japanese destroyers)
