OK guys I need some help.
I have been forced on my e-mail signature to change it from draughtsman to draughtsperson. I argued it was daft PC bollocks but I was told, it's the law having "man" in the title is illegal (as is having "woman") but I can't seem to find anything in employment law saying directly that this is illegal. I think it might be down to interpretation. So if UKers can help me out be finding in black and white that it says it would be illegal for me to be calling myself draughtsman then I'll back down. Till then I'll moan like hell.

This is this kind of modern things going on that makes me want to scream, kick, hit and yell. Murdering a person is one thing. Murdering a whole culture is something nvery different. Meanest of all is murdering by poison (aka murdering by political correctness).

"Kindermädchen" (nanny) = "Kinderperson"?

Ouh, sorry, Xabba, I am of no help with this posting. I just needed to explode a bit.

If you have the time, and can afford it, fight them. And get the media involved, if by any means possible. Gute Jagd!

You stick your your guns XabbaRus and don't let those PC thugs push you around, as you pointed out it's not in black and white so you are a draughtsman. This is the PC sexism having a go.

This pc thing is really getting out of hand, and I agree it's a load of bollocks.
I remember how ridiculous it was when they changed chairman to chair, what?!!!
Now they also call manholes personholes. How ridiculous is that?

I know we are not allowed to be called "dustman" anymore but this has been out title for goodness knows how long and everyone knows what a dustman is.

We are either "kerbside recycling loaders or drivers" or "refuse collection opratives"

Alot of people have argueed that we should still be called dustmen since well everyone calls us it and we are generaly proud to be called dustmen.

Well from doing a google search I cannot find anything that explicitly states that you cannot have a job title that is gender specific. As far as I can make out it is when advertising a job vacancy that can be fulfillied by either a man or a woman that the job title has to either be gender neutral, eg Draughtsperson or you have to specify both eg Draughtsman/Draughtswoman. That I can accept, but once the job is offered I see no legal reason why the gender specific title can't be used.

At work they can't see what the fuss is. They all shout "It's the law but I bet none of them have read the law.

That is unbielevable. I'd file a complaint of discrimination against my sex over that. See how they take it from there. Just as idea.

Tell them you're not an asexual moron with a predisposition to kiss ass.
Better yet, tell them if you cannot be refered to as a draughtsman in your email signature, then you will quite happily change it to 'CADmonkey' or perhaps 'Mushroom' (kept in the dark, fed on ****).

One of my colleagues refers to herself as a draughtsman (draughtswoman on the internal telephone list).

From one Draughtsman to another; don't let the bastards grind you down with their weakness.

Can't see anywhere that this is 'the law' indeed the only place I might expect to find this sort of thing is when you work for the council - then you have to please everybody at the expense of everybody. Damn apologists.

Well I changed my sig to Draughtsman without telling them so until someone notices I ain't going to chagne a thing. Anyway I think on my contract it says draughtsman so if I can dig that out I'll be well chuffed.

Good for you! I'd do the same thing. And if you have a woman on your crew, then you can tell her to use draughtswoman - and tell her you won't be offended.
