Ok, as I progress through the game, questions arise :) Good thing you all are here!

I finished my 10th patrol, relocated to Lorient and all is well. Last patrol was worth 15000 tons or so, with 4 ships sunk. I am up to Eichenlaub mit Schwerten, but my crew got nothing! They all have the clasp or whatever, but that's it. I got 2 promotions, which I distributed.

Now, I notice SHIIC has an iron cross II class to give out, as well as some others. Do awards somehow not show in game? If not, then did GWX slow down the experience/awards?

I do not mind, not at all! It's more in keeping with reality I am sure. Just in plain vanilla, I would have given most my officers an IC I am sure, as well as promoted someone. I really don't want to give out rewards I don't have (via SHIIIC), but I don't want the crew to be missing out, while their Kaleun racks up rewards :p

What's going on?

Thanks!

did you remember to press apply after handing out a medal?
you have to do that at every crew member

SH3 commander would probably be the best way to go here.

In most military situations it is a persons immediate commanding officer who recommends them for a promotion or an award. In this case that is you.

it is all situational.

for example whenever i get a crew together for the first time i immediately give them their special skills via SH3 commander. These petty officers and officers would have come from the acaedemy already having these skills so it is kind of pointless for them to "earn skills" along the way. No crew goes out to sea in a U-boat and learns their trade through combat. they might get more experience at it or whatever but they would have already possessed those skills upon completion of their training before they ever got on your boat.

second thing i do is after completing one patrol everyone on the boat gets the U-boat war badge.

another thing i will "simulate" via SH3 commander is acts of bravery, heroism or the like. Foe example... if we are cruising on the surface and the watch crew spots a destroyer who is obviously charging at us in order to attack. i will award the watch crew medals.

If the damage control team manages to repair damage that would have otherwise been the end of the boat i will award the guys on damage control a medal.

if i go out on a particularly successful patrol i will award the officers medals according to the success experienced.

thats the beauty of SH3 commander - you - as the commanding officer can pick and choose who to award medals to. if one compartment performed particularly well give them awards for it. all you do is drag whatever award you want to the crewman discription and click apply after every award for every sailor. it will show in the game.

another thing i try to simulate is crew rotation. If it comes time to dismiss my chief engineer to let him have command of his own boat all the officers move up a notch. Weapons officer now becomes chief engineer, navigator moves to weapons, watch officer moves to navigation, and then bring in the new guy. When it comes time to replace the chief engineer again - just move everyone up another position.

i know that this is probably not the answer you are looking for but just keep in mind

1. the commanding officer of the boat recommends crew members for promotions and awards. it is usually up to a committee to review after action reports and investigate as to whether or not there is any merit to the recommendation. if there is then your guy gets his medal. SH3 DOES IT WRONG in assuming that when you get back to port the commanding officer of your flotilla says "Ok you get 3 u-boat war badges this month... hand them out however you want"

2. the commanding officer of the boat is held responsible for all the successes and failures of the crew - if you go out and "sink them all" you will likely get a lot of medals and your crew doesnt get jack.

for higher realism in having the authority to delegate who gets medals when recommend SH3 commander.

Thank you for your feedback.

I started using the awards about as you are. Once any crew member is 50% or more "overexperienced", I promote him. All have their badge, but I might start giving clasps for sure. A couple of officers have earned Iron Crosses for sure (and a promotion).

A couple of questions:

1) One of my crew members (a matrose) has "Renown: 50". What does that mean? All others have zero.
2) How do you promote officers to their "own command"? Do you just kick them out and simulate it?

3) In general, share if you will how you manage your crew :) Thanks

P.S.: I do keep the "one specialist per patrol" rule. For one, by now all my officers and warrant officers have a specialty (at least one). For another, sure the academy teaches the basics, but the Ocean teaches all the rest :know:
