View Full Version : Strategic goal?

I'm playing SH3 for 5 months now day by day and I have to say that, after a while, I begin to kind of miss a strategic goal in this game, especially after beating the u-boat aces and getting a boat you like.
Something that makes you do the utmost to get a merchant.
In this game you can always wait fo another encounter and never take risks.
I compare the dynamic campaign often with Red Baron II's (with Hell's Angels/FCJ/other big mods), where it stays a goal to compete with the big aces throughout the career.
I hope I'm making myself clear :-?
I love the game don't get me wrong :sunny:

Sounds like you need a new career.:yep:
Start over, and this time do something new and dangerous. You could go for a career in the Med. Crazy out there. Shallow waters, concentrated shipping, DDs everywhere. A nice change from the Atlantic.
Play a different year, a different boat. Invent a role to play.
Or you could get SH3 Gen. It reads the campaign files for the month that your patrol covers and it gives you limited intel and also often gives you a special mission that you can perform. It means nothing to the actual records of the game but its a nice extra. And since it always bases the mission on a real place or ship in the campaign files its actually there.
Sounds like you need GWX. :hmm:

Sounds like you need Subwolves. Check out their forum on this board (at the bottom of the page)...

I was like that too, not getting challenged enough by the stock SH III. I upgraded to GWX and I'll never go back to stock. The detail is great and the AI seems smarter. I was spotted around dusk approaching a convoy. Its been 2 hours and I still can't shake this DD! Who knows how long it will go on, but if I sink anything it will be a major accomplishment! :arrgh!:

Try GWX and if you survive the experience tell us what you think ;) :p :D

If you haven't already considered it and it hasn't already been mentioned, try GWX :arrgh!:

Yeah give in to peer pressure.
Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it, do it.

On this specific point, GWX is not doing the job neither even if it s actualy realistic.
The main issue in GWX is to get out and in of your home base and even this can be done much more easily if you re playing safe.
Canavaro point is you don t have to take risk to make your way to the top sunker of WWII as you can take your time and choose your target wisely. To make it challenging as P_funk mentioned it, you have to give yourself some objective. As a specific convoy, as gibraltar, as raiding scapa flow, etc...
There is no "no pain, no gain" in SHIII, even with GWX, you can always play it safe.
Actualy, I think the best way to make it more challenging is to disable map information about other ship :) (god eyes or something like that)

Oh I take that as a given. I go 90% realism. And I sacrifice that extra 10% for the external cam cause I'm a screenie whore. But by all means, make it as hard on yourself as possible.
Disabling the god's eye is a good first step in weaning yourself off of the unrealistic auto targeting features. Eventually going all manual TDC is a game in and of itself.

I m always 100% realism, manual TDC since first patrol ;)
But not having the target on map make it a lot harder to get a perfect solution. Speed is easy to get but range and AoB is harder, expecialy range.

I find range to be rather easy. If I'm on the surface I can just ask my Watch Officer. AoB is the hardest and most important. Range can be off by alot and not cause you to miss. However the AoB is key. As is Speed. An approximate stadimeter reading is all I need if I'm submerged. AoB is what I spend all I my time getting right. Be it by guessing it through visual acuity or by getting course and turning it into AoB.
take a type IID out for a spin and stick with it. That little boat has just rekindled my interest in SH3.

You seem to be the only one who understands my point here. :D
About your suggestion...already playing at full realism, except external view.
Ah maybe I'll try GWX again, but it's so slow on my comp :x
