View Full Version : Some comparative questions about SH3?

I am just learning the game and I have a few comparitive questions:

(1) In AOD and SH1, the player was given a hint "depth charges in the water" or the sound of splashes when DCs were dropped close. Is there anything like that in SH3?

(2) Also, I notice the screw noise of escort screws heard through the hull directly above seems to be much diminished from AOD/SH1. Or have I not been playing long enough to hear it?

(3) Also, is there any indicator that ASDIC has picked you up? In AOD/SH1, the sound of the ping changes which is a clear indication that you have been located. Anything like that here?

(4) Does underwater speed impare the performance of your own passive sonar? It did in AOD and partially in SH1, but it doesn't seem to affect map updates in SH3.

Thanks.

1. Yes at periscope depth when a destroyer passes over you and drops DCs the splashes can be audible, also the sonar officer will report "Depth Charges in the water" (in whatever language you have selected.) If you are shallow enough to hear the splashes without the use of the hydrophone your likely going to be killed.

2. Depends a lot on your depth. If you are really deep it will be diminished just like in real life, but if you are less than say 40 meters and someone passes over you screw noises will be very audible.

3. as in real life there are only a couple of indicators that ASDIC has detected you. you will either hear splashes overhead, or the pinging will be at shorter intervals. Long intervals means the ASDIC source is further away, faster intervals means the ASDIC source is close to what it is detecting (which may or may not be your boat)

4. Ambient noise in the hydrophone becomes louder when you travel underwater at faster speeds. If you observe the same level of effeciency in the hydrophones at flank speed underwater as you do when at slow speeds you might have the option for "realistice sensors" disabled.

Thanks that was very helpful.

Shorter pings; just like SC when an inbound torpedo is tracking.

sometimes the sonarman is good enough to actually say "we've been detected sir" aswell ;)

Usually when DDs approach you pinging, they have you and are trying to get your depth.
