I'm the proud skipper of a Type VII/C41 with a type 3 conning tower with 2 light flak and 1 heavy quad flak, just finished a mission and in the upgrades there's a new heavy flak option.whats the ultimate setup in this configuration because I don't want to lose my deck gun and go the flak boat route,by the way it's march'44.opinions and experiences with flak combinations please;) :yep:
Deck Gun in 1944. :rotfl:
Hang on on serious about keeping your deck gun.
You probably got all you need without saying good bye to your deck gun.
Deck guns went bye, bye by 1943. If not earlier.

Do you get more options for flak if you take away the Deck gun??
If so I would go all flak!! how often do you really use your Deck Gun in 1944 ??
Most merchants have defensive measures by that year anyway.

Playing patched vanilla...
I recently finished my last career in an IXC w/ the 2 duals & 1 quad.. I agree that towards the end of the war, it was getting hard to use the deck gun, especially w/ all the armed merchants.. But, I was getting pretty good at popping up right behind the merchants & blasting them from behind w/ the deck gun. If you can take out their rear gun with a shot or two & then stay behind them, it was easy to take them down.. The quad flak was great against the B24's and small vessels.. I liked it when the Elco's would get into range & I'd go to town on the quad..
Good Luck!! Back in 1940 w/ a VIIC & single flak

I like my deckgun:yep: it helps to finish off some of the more stubbon ships that would normally require another eel,as long as you stay a respectful distance your usually safe from they're guns, the new update option is some 2 barreled auto loading thing which I've not experienced before.the quad is good but this new option might have a longer range,I was just wondering if anybody has any advice on the matter,I'm not really a plane versus sub dueler but if push comes to shove I just want the best option;)

Here's my thoughts on Flak guns... personal opinions only, of course... other folk may disagree! ;)
There is the VIIC/4 "U-Flak" conning tower. That gives you three heavy Flak platforms, but is limited to the VIIC, VIIC/41 and VIIC/42 boats only. It also prevents you using a deck gun.
If you want to keep your deck gun (I do!), then for the VIIC, VIIC/41 and VIIC/42 boats, you can install a VIIC/3 tower, which gives you two light and one heavy Flak platforms.
For the IXC and IXC/40 boats, you can use the IXC/3 tower, which has the same capacity.
The best Flak to put on a light platform is the 2cm FK C/38 Flakzwilling (available July'43), because of its stable platform and high rate of fire.
The best Flak for the heavy platform is the 3.7cm FK M 42 Twin (available Dec'43), because of it's high rate of fire, excellent damage ability and continuous reloading. It is better than the 2,0cm Quad, because the Quad is not properly modelled in the game and has a slower rate of fire than it should have.
If you are using a U-Flak boat, 3 x M 42 Twin is pretty awsome, but the M 42 + 2 x C/38 Flakzwilling option is also good and you can still mount a deck gun.

I am just thinking the best 'flak' move in `44 would be a quick flank dive to 20-30m.
Then again as soon as I get anywhere near `43 my boat usually gets it's jazz blasted.
A lesser used or maybe less known combo is the extra flak platform for the VIIB. Neat deal imo.

You can even take on some of the smaller escorts with this beauty  :arrgh!:
