View Full Version : A bit off topic: which German cities do you know?
Hi all, sorry for posting something slightly off-topic, but I m having an argument with a friend of mine about which German cities are "known" by people around the world. So, if you would be as kind as doing me a favor, could you please simply write down 2-5 cities that IMMEDIATELY and SPONTANEOSLY come to your mind when you think about "German cities I ve heard of/been to/seem to be important"?
Please do not necessarily name those that you know from the SH3 map like eg Wilhelmshaven and Kiel, but name those that you personally and individually have heard about.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE,
Cheers, AS

I studied in the german school here at Valencia, and thus learnt specifically german geography as well as went many times to germany. Cities of germany I think of spontaneusly are those where I have been in those trips.:) Freiburg, München, Hamburg, Kiel, Lübeck, Stuttgart, Frankfurt....in fact I am more or less much familiar with all the south-west of germany. And would you believe it? Me idiot was some years ago near Laboe and I had no idea of U-995 being there:damn: so I missed the visit:down:
Thanks so far for your replies.

I have relatives living in Ulm, MY parents were walking in the town square in Ulm and saw the Gulde Bakery, My grandparent's last name is Gulde and still talk to relatives living in parts of Germany. My parents would have walked in but it was closed.
I have been to a lot of little villages allong the Rhine and Mossel rivers, they were very nice, lots of wine hahaha. Germany is my favorate country in Europe besides Ireland and Norway.

Oh, without reading the rest of the thread -Heidelburg (wife has family there), Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Baden, Bremen, Koln, a few others.
Berlin,Dresden,Hamburg, cologne (sorry Koln) not very many thats english o level geography for you:oops:
Edit: Just looked back through the thread as I didn't want to spoil it for myself now I'm reminded I do know a few others.
I've been to Koln, Aachen, Hamburg and Berlin. Also Munster - but I'm not sure whether that's a city or not without checking... Been through Dresden on the train too.
...Worms...
Is that really a place in Germany, or are you having us on?

My family name or last name translated to german/norwegean would be the same:up: Han-sen, Han-son, or John-son (English), all mean "Son of John/Hans". In russian it would be "Ivanov", I think:yep:

Surely you remember Martin Luther and the 'Diet of Worms', from school history?
I thought Munster was in Ireland.
Thank you very much for your replies. The actual argument that I had with my friend was about the status of Cologne (Köln) and Düsseldorf. There´s always been a kind of fight between those two (similar to Manchester and Liverpool), not to be taken too seriously of course, but it´s godd for many jokes. Now my point was that nobody in the world has ever heard about Düsseldorf, but they will have heard about Cologne...
Interestingly enough, your answers didn´t quite match what I would have expected since some of you actually DO know Düsseldorf, whereas both cities are not mentioned very often. Another thing I find interesting that only a few think of Berlin (the capitol!), but you know outsiders like Ulm or Münster (lovely, but very small).
So, thank you very much again,
Cheers, AS
(@Gizzmoe, no offence intended, I know you´re from Düsseldorf...nobody´s perfect...)

I could think of a whole lot of cities; I picked that one because it's special to my heart.

Like he said, it's a small place where we have friends in Germany, but the 'u'-umlaut key on my keyboard seems to be missing! lol!
However, you're quite right! Munster - the umlaut-less city - is in Ireland.
And I've never heard of Worms. Sadly, History at school sacrificed Martin Luther King for the Vietnam war.
Is there a place in Germany called "Worms"? If it's a joke, I don't get it!
No itsn't a joke, we laughed about it at school but Martin Luther the father of protestantinism pinned the tennets of his belief to the door of worms cathedral and pretty much changed northern europe and through that the world not acknowlededged enough in my book...not that I'm a particularly devout christian:know:

This has been such a great question I'm going to ask the same of our european (and other neighbours) in a fresh topic right now.

To be fair, only reason I'd heard of Köln is that it's also one of the few WW2 German surface ships, and Düsseldorf isn't.

Hold up a sec, here. Martin Luther King is NOT Martin Luther. One is a black American civil rights leader (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King%2C_Jr.) in the 1960s, the other is a white German 'founder' of the Protestant Reformation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_luther) in the 1500s.

Riiiight... I confused the two. Thanks to you guys (and subsequently Wikipedia!) for straightening that out! My bad!

Only 2-5? I don't know so few.
Berlin, Hamburg, Bonn, Koln, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Baden, Munich, Lahr, Dortmund, Dresden, Leipzig, Halle, Augsburg, Potsdam, Nuremburg, Weimar, Hannover, Stuttgart, Heidelburg, Lubeck, Lunenburg, Magdeburg, Rothenburg, Bayreuth, Nierstein, Oppenheim, Bernkastle, Deidesheim, Koerner...
That's just a few that come quickly to mind. Perhaps some are too small to be considered cities.
There are so many ways to know of a German city: History (military, social and religious), music, wine, people...
East Berlin...West Berlin...No, wait....That was a long time ago...oh cr@p..:nope::rotfl:

Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons - Douglas MacArthur
Was that before or after Harry Truman ended MacArthur's career - with a pen?
Oh, and in case I didn't mention it earlier - Welcome Aboard!

Augh!!! How could I forget Dusseldorf?!? (I didn't mention Essen or Duisburg either. Is it something about Nordrhin-Westfalen?)
Anyway, you are right. One hardly ever thinks of Dusseldorf. My only mental connection to it is through the topic of airports.
I'm a bit disappointed in myself that I didn't think of Worms, Munster, Rostock, Mannheim, Saarbrucken, Ulm, Aachen, or Bremen.
