I just came back from three games in a row of Salomon Islands, after finally having understood how to get into the game. My, is it fun.
Even I, who generally frown upon simplistic 'fun' games and prefer more complex titles, loved it once I got into it. Probably because of the long-term planning that is involved in the game. Midway does require you to think a little, rather than just rush everything you have at the enemy head-on. Some player co-ordination is required, too (particularly between Shipyard Players and Carriers Players - those flattops need protection!).
I particularly have taken a liking to playing as a fleet commander (Shipyard), sneaking about in subs and cruisers and crushing the opposition from Battleships. Last game I badly underestimated the defenses of the US harbour and sent a Cruiser headlong into it. It was sunk in an instant. Apparently, a set of AA guns, an LST, a Fleet Tender, and a Troop Transport can pack quite a punch when grouped together:o. I had more luck with my submarine, but I spent so much time sneaking and getting into attack position that by the time I was ready to attack, both carriers were sunk:oops:.
My only complaint is that the rounds are over way too fast. I suppose this may be specific to this demo level only, but I think the maps should be bigger and the objectives far more sturdy.
It'd be interesting if a realism mod was made for the game, to see what it might accomplish.
