View Full Version : Is it possible to manually set range in TDC

Can you manually set a range into the PK? I like using the division marks on the scope versus using the stadimeter. but it looks like only the stadimeter lets you input range.

You can: Click on the wheel and rotate it, then click on the "send range to tdc" button.
One thing though, unless I am missing something obvious, you cannot set a range further than 1000 (yards). For bigger ranges you need to use the stadimeter.

Without using the stadimeter, you limit is 1300 yards, with the stadimeter is is much more but it seems that it gets very inaccurate. You may set 7k yards, but the TDC PK will show around 6k yards.

There does seem to be an upper limit around 1000 or so yards to manually setting the range. However, you can use the stadimeter and just ignore the image in the scope. In other words, if you know what the range you want to input is just "use" the stadimeter and ignore the image, just move it up and down until the dial reads the range you are trying to input. Once you have a rough range using this method you can then manually tweak the range for higher values. Not an eligant solution, but gets the job done.

can you try and explain this in noob terms? How would I go about "manually tweaking the range for higher values" after I have already "used" the stadimeter (while ignoring image setup) to get my rough range?
I am playing in 100% realism and I am often in situations where I have good knowledge of range from sonar reports and tracking but the weather and seas are so rough that it is impossible for me to get a good image laydown using stadimeter so I can't get the proper range input into the TDC. It's quite frustrating for me to know the range and not being able to get it into TDC because of waves interfering with the stadimeter view.

I'll do my best :know:
Okay... I'll start from the start. When you ID a ship and hit the checkmark it enters the mast height into the range part of the TDC. This is the clear triangle with the red tick mark in it around the outside of the wheel. You can also enter this manually. At any rate when you use the stadimeter the inner wheel of the dial turns and is supposed to do that math for you and give you the range.
So if you want to forgo ID'ing the ship and have an idea of what the range is just ignore the image and move the stadimeter until the wheel turns to the desired range. Now to answer your question greekfire. If through observation or using the attack map you realize that the range is off you can tweak it by changing the input of the mast height a little this way or that. You do this by moving the clear triangle with the red tick on the outside of the wheel. If you move it clockwise it will increase the range input and vise-versa without having to take a new stadimeter reading, be sure to hit the send to PK button after moving the mast height.
Obviously this isn't an authentic way to do things, but this is war, what ever works.
Disclaimer- There are of course many ways to skin a cat, but this has been working for me when I want to make relativly minor range adjustments.

Fantastic description.
On another note dealing with this, is the input to TDC button on the stadimeter the only way of sending the target bearing to the TDC?

Unfortunately, I think it is. I've found no other way. The dials that show bearing to target don't have very good markings to accurately set that manually anyway, in my opinion.

Sadly that's what I thought. In the control room it looks like there are some nifty dials and such for the torps, but none really do anything.

The fireing button works here in the conning tower as the pic shows, but thats about it as I don't think you could actually set up a hit from here in the Sim. Then again you could use the "W" key and set up the torp you wanted to fire, use the "end/home" keys on the sonar to get the bearing and then click the button for the distance, click the button to send to the TDC ( I think it works? )and cross your fingers. Bet some people will try it as it would not be an easy task. I was on the surface just goofing around when this pic was taken.

You can also use the hydrophones to send the bearing to the tdc. First move the hydrophone to the target, then click the 3D button under it "send bearing to tdc" which will send the bearing that the hydorphone is currently set to when you clicked the button.
I think using the interface button "send bearing to TDC" will use the bearing that the sonar AI sets the hydophone to and not where you have manually set the hydorphone to yourself.
