View Full Version : Starting sub - which is the best class to start with?

I'm about to start a campaign, but there is little hint on the differences between the boats in the manual, etc., and the online difference as far as I kind find are rather pathetic too.
Anyone have any clues on this?

Personally, i would start with a Tambor or Gar (same thing really).

I too enjoy the Tambor.

When I played the sim I always started off with the Gar. Awesome sub, imo.

Thanks for the info, but from the looks of it, the specs from what type are nearly the same as the next. That is why I ask. With the German subs, this was an easy task.

Well, the selection is really the result of evolution in sub design. When US navy said, "we want a sub capable of this, that, and the other thing". So US subs were slowly evolving over time as new designs were tried to meet the Navy's needs.
The rough evolutionary gist of it is:
S Class -> Porpoise -> Salmon -> Sargo -> Tambor/Gar -> Gato -> Balao -> Tench
- porpoise is pretty much like a german type 9. 4 forward/ 2 aft
- Salmon/Sargo have 4 forward / 4 aft
- Tambor/Gar are the first fully realized fleet boats 6 forward/ 4 aft
- The gato is to the tambor what an IXC/40 was to an IXC, only it dove deeper.
- Balao is what a 7/c41 is to a 7c. This boat dove deeper then a Gato.
- Tench, not in game.

So no real difference between Tambor and Gar?
In the game, none in fact - they share the same files for all performance.
I like to start out with something sub-tambor. So far I've played around with Porpoise, Sargo and S-class more than the later boats in fact.

Personally, I like to start out primitive.
So for me, I like the Porpoise and the S-class; however, the game gives kind of a false sense of decency to those classes. I mean, there was an S boat that sank in the Patuxant River in Maryland for crying out loud; and the TDC that you see in the game wasn't introduced until the Tambor class, and even the Porpoise was considered to have unreliable engines by the time the war started.
I just like to start out with the crappy boats because I think it makes you appreciate the ability to fire off 10 torpedoes, and detect enemy ships and airplanes with RADAR and dive to a 60 foot periscope depth all that much more when you do get them.

I've been running on an S class. I see some other classes with this fleet that aren't mentioned above too.

PS. NEver mind - they are mentioned - Salmon and Sargo class. So basically this early in the war, I need to hope to upgrade to a Gato I think.

The Salmon! I love those subs and I always have for some reason. Sure they are a bit old, but they sure take a lot and they will give a lot.:rock:

The Gato is the best to start with but its way better to start from the very begining, the mighty SS CLASS :rock: and work ya way up. I just got given the US DRUM. But im a long way from getting the Gato yet.

There is no best class to start with. Every person wants to play thier own way. Try them all, see what you like. If you were the kind that liked Type II in SHIII for example, use an S-boat. Want a better boat, get something like a Gar. Nothing says you cant run several concurrent campaigns with different boat types.

S Class it rocks :D:rock::rock:
S-Class. She'll crash dive in 15 seconds to evade those pesky aircraft. Although I doubt that this is prototypical.:lol:
