Not a bug at all, SH4 simulates failed torpedo gyros.

Most people have had a torp circle on them. I had a couple myself know and then, this is why I usually dive immediately after firing torpedoes now.

Congrats! You now know what it was like for the U.S.S. Tang! Nice to see they put it in the game as it did happen

zamboni,

Have you read the SH4 manual. This is an intended feature of the game and historically accurate. You can turn this feature off if you don't like it.

You can turn it off? Didnt know that, is that the dud torpedos selection? Usually have this off but I want a boomerang torp:D

Just to add to the Tang drama, a Dutch sub had a similar problem. They fired two torpedoes. Either on impact or due to early detonation of the first torpedo, the second torpedo got reversed. The sub sank with all hands lost.

Which brings me to another question: my torpedoes seem to detonate prematurely, especially in (fairly) shallow waters. Are they running deeper than I set them so that they explode due to hitting the bottom? Or was there some malfunction appart from duds with the Mark 14?

It saved a Kongo in Hiroshima port from disaster though.

Thanks?

Yes, running deep was a problem. :yep:

Have had the same problem with dud torps turned off. Is scary as he!! when one of those come back arround at you.

According to what I have read, the torps ran about 11-12 feet deeper then set. Have tried to adjust the depth for the difference and it was still to lower and the mag det would not go off. I gave on on using the mag det till after August of 42.

I've had torps go too deep myself but no boomerangs yet that I know of. Hmm. If you don't have external views on and can't see the wake, how do you know if it's looping back at you? Do you listen on sonar? Or just dive and pray?

I've had that happen to me as well. Once in the training mission. I lined up my shot, fired all 4 at the Mogami and waited. Next thing I know, my crew was sreaming and my sub was sinking..., but somehow I managed to survive and sunk the cruiser with 3 of my torpedos.

You can see the wake through the periscope.:ahoy:

Well, if we are to believe all those classic sub movies, the guy on the hydrophones would report that your torpedoes are 'running hot straight and normal' if they are doing okay, and I did consider modifying the launch wav file to include this, but if they weren't 'running hot straight and normal', it would be a bit silly, so I never bothered :-?

However, you could track them yourself on the hydrophones (assuming it's a submerged attack) and then say it to yourself for the ultimate in immersion :D

I just lost my brand new shiny Balao to a dead gyro on a torp!

It would be nice if the sonar man would report more than just "Torpedo in the water" and give something more meaningful like "Torpedo running normally" or "Nohmygod! Dive captain! Dive!"
