Hello. This is another Method to estimate Target speed fairly accurate and quickly without to much math or special tools. All you need is a pocket calculator or use your brain if youre good at mental arithmetic.

here we go:

1. Identify the vessel.you dont even need range or AoB now. We are going to grab the speed first. Just make sure AoB is somewhere between 50 and 140

2. Catch the Time your target needs to pass the center line of the optics in seconds.just place the center line in front of the ship and start the watch when the bow touchs the line. Get the time when the stern has passed the line.

3. Devide the "magic" number from the table below by the time you have catched.round it and you have your speed in knots. Now complete your firing solution with range and AoB.

The List

Battleships:Fuso 418
Kongo 426
Ise 435
Yamato 520

Carrier:Hiryu Fleet Carrier 444
Shokaku Fleet carrier 510
Akitsu Eskort Carrier 295
Chitose Seaplane Tender 362
Taiyo Escort Carrier 351

CruiserMaya Heavy Cruiser 398
Mogami Heavy Cruiser 388
Takao Heavy Cruiser 398
Agano Light Cruiser 333
Kuma Light Cruiser 315
Naka Light Cruiser 315

DestroyerAkizuki Destroyer 259
Asashio Destroyer 231
Fubuki Destroyer 231
Minekaze Destroyer 194
Mutsuki Destroyer 194
Shiratsuyu Destroyer 204

Other WarshipsLarge Minelayer 240
Minesweaper 139
Medium Gunboat 111
Small Gunboat 93
Subchaser 128

Troop CarriersHuge European Liner 343
Large Old Passenger Carrier 267
Modern Passenger Lliner 260
Small Passenger Carrier 152

TankersLarge Modern Tanker 300
Medium Old Tanker 204
Small Old Tanker 151

MerchantsLarge Modern Composite 273
Large Old Split Freighter 269
Medium European Composite 237
Medium Modern Composite 204
Medium Modern Split Freighter 218
Medium Old Composit Freighter 207
Medium Old Split Freighter 238
Small Modern Composite Freighter 159
Small Old Split Freighter 169

This method is fairly accurate at AoB between 50 and 140 with an error less then 0.5 knots. You will have best results at AoB 75-105. Outside of 50-140 range the error develops rapidly. Ive tested the numbers for each ship. It works for any range at any speed.
Note The higher the speed though the higher the error, it becomes important at speeds of 30+ knots.
Note The slower the target the longer it takes to catch the time. Merchants traveling at 5 knots should take about 40 seconds to pass the optics.
Note Your own speed must be zero or close to that. The faster you move the less accurate is the solution. You can move when your solution is ready. Position Keeper should take your speed in account.
Note before you activate the Position keeper you should complete the solution. If you start position keeper first, it might spoil your solution a little bit since the speed is going into calculation from beginning now.
Hint While the vessel is passing the optics you can use the time to set up the torpedos

My idea was first to put the numbers into recognition book together with other important information and release it as a mod. But i have no clue how the recognition manual is put together so maybe a skilled modder can do that. Feel free to do so id love it.

Another good idea would be to release the list as fine printready PDF. I dont have any PDF Software on my machine at the moment. If someone has such tools, make us happy.

Good Hunting.

Just tried this on the torpedo sub school. Accurately got the speed of the cruiser (8.8) rounded up to 9. Cheers, very useful. :up:

Nice list there. Saves us the trouble of finding the ships length and converting our timed results from feet/sec into knots.

To make this a mod, you would need to place a wildcard entry for this number into the [G25] section of the menu_1024_768.ini so that it would appear in the recognition manual in a certain spot on each page for each boat. Then you would need to go to data/sea/data/.... open each boat folder and place that spefic boats "magic" number into each folder for each boat in the directory.

Here is my guess of what would go into the menu_1024_768.ini if we called the number "magic" but I am pretty much just winging this so verify these entries....

[G25 I53]
Name=Magic val
Type=1029;Static text
ItemID=0x25070009
ParentID=0x25070000
Pos= (I think this is a SH3 relic and not used in SHIV so you can probably leave blank for just fill in with junk coordinates x, x, x, x)
Zone= (experiment with the variable vectors to determine proper location of entry on boat page of recognition manual)
Color=0xFE
Font=19
Text=955
TextFlags=0x4

[G25 I54]
Name=Magic
Type=1029;Static text
ItemID=0x25070010
ParentID=0x25070000
Pos=(not used in SHIV)
Zone= (experiment with vectors here for entry placement on boat recognition page in manual)
Color=0xFE
Font=19
Text=(not sure what goes here)
TextFlags=0x6

If I knew how to edit the menu_1024_768.ini, I would be happy to do it but I fear I don't know much more about it than what I have put in this post. If I find out more, I will certainly pass it your way. Should be a fairly easy mod to an experienced user.

I just bought this game 2 days ago so I'm still a noob.

There is a tutorial on editing the menu_1024_768.ini but I don't have the time to read it yet. here is the link...http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=111832

good luck.

Great 'magic numbers' werner, any chance of doing something similar for SHIII or even releasing your 'magic number' formulae ???
I am seriously looking at trying to mod the SH4 recog manual to include not only the 'magic numbers' but also the AoB Aspect Ratio done by Hitman.
I have done some work on the SHIII manual with aspect ratio but would also like to do your magic number thing !

WernerSobe, get the free version of Adobe8 for PDF. You can also buy it to make PDF documents if you so wish. Or you can write it up in a Wordpad or Rich Text Document.

Nice list you've done and thanks. :up:

Thanks too ReM for the PDF. :up:

Here's another Free PDF solution;
It's called "freepdf" oddly enough :D
After installing the program you can print ANYTHING to a pdf file. Just pick any document, picture etc and print it, in your list of installed printers will be freepdf. Simply choose it for your printer and viola, a pdf file is generated.

You need to dl 2 components to make it work, freepdf and ghostscript. There's a link on the site to dl G.S.

We all use this where I work, highly recomended! :up:

I use a program called "CutePDF Writer", there is a free version. It acts like a printer. I have used it here to save threads as PDF for future reference. I just hit print and choose CutePdf Writer as my printer and presto a PDF of whatever you "printed". Works from any program that has "print" in it. Probably similar to the others mentioned here, but I am not familiar with them so I don't know if they work the same way.
Of course the drawback, since it is not a full featured PDF program, you can't change what it prints. What you see is what you get. So if I wanted your list and used CutePdf, I would get the whole page not just your post.
thank you WS for the info and thank you ReM for the PDF.

On initial set up I run parallel to see what the bearing rate is and figure an estimate that way based on how much I am controling by my own speed - a simplier way that works 90 percent of the time.
Slow = 3-5Kts
Med = 10-12 kts
fast = 15+

These are good starting points - I have found that the bulk of the Merchies operate at about 5kts, Cruise ships at 15 and warships (TF) at 11.

Perfect work!!! Tested this method with a Transatlantic. Its real speed was 10 kts, and the estimation was 10.08!!!!!:up::up:

i had made a small program to do just this for you some years back.

someone had uploaded it to filefront it seems:
http://files.filefront.com/SH4+Speed+Calcexe/;9641405;/fileinfo.html

it was for stock SH4, so i'm not sure it will still work.... seeing as the names of the ships are different in the last mod i played; and the lengths of the ships may have changed.

i may write another one that is configurable instead of hard wired so that it can be kept up to date.

basically, you picked the ship from a list and entered the time it took to pass your crosshairs and it gave you its speed.

Gutted, you were away too long! As usual you were several steps ahead. Too bad it can't be turned into a game mod, but this tool is great! Looking forward to a configurable version that can be updated for new ship types and corrections for length. This is plenty good enough for now though!

"As usual you were several steps ahead"

maybe for the fleet boat crowd.. but for us grizzled u-boat kaleun these things are nothing new ;P

for SH3 i didn't need a tool because the length of the ship is IN the rec manual. all that is needed is a calculator and some basic easy to remember math. why its absent from SH4 i dunno. thats why i made the tool, because i never had the length of the ship handy.

acutally there was a way to get accurate speed of ships in SH3 by just listening to the enemy's screws and counting the revolutions per minute. there was a chart made that gave you the speed. all one had to do was count the "major" 3rd or 4th beats of the screw for 1 minute and look at the chart. if pressed for time you could count for 30 or 15 seconds and multiply it to get the 'per minute' value.

if it was a radio'd contact that was said to be moving 'slow'.. i'd pretty much know which ship it was just by noting its rpm and looking at the chart (without ever actually seeing it).

ofcourse the supermods killed this by adding their own hydrophone sounds (which is easily undone).

I'm serious about the configurable version, because I'd love to work one up for the RFB crew. I'm all about eliminating the math and pressing buttons. That's what computers are for!:up:
