View Full Version : Ever wonder why the ports are modeled in the Atlantic Area?

:hmm: Was pondering this earlier. Is it possible the UBI might release and add-on to SH4 for the U-Boats and Allied boats in the Atlantic Campaign? Maybe even later put the British and other allied and axis subs in an add-on?:hmm:
Just like they did with the European and Pacific Theaters of operation in iL2.

Nah, they're there because they just added Pacific ports to the existing SH3 world model. Wouldn't count on an expansion pack though, it seems UBI prefers to put out full priced games instead.

I think with the IL2 series, you will find that to be quite untrue.

Have you seen the port models in SH4 compaired to SH3? New York for one its altot bigger and has alot more detail. Its not even the same port model. They have several upgrades to iL2 that are not full releases. The WW2 Pacific addon did not use the European terrain models either. Was a USD $29+ addon and iL2 is a UBI release.

The odd thing is, a majority of those atlantic ports did not exist in stock sh3.

Who's to say, maybe in 4 to 6 months we might see an addon for say $29.95 USD. Would be a way to make cash alot faster than waiting 2 years for another full release. Then maybe 6 months after that, some more subs form other countries could be added. Then maybe....just maybe...Destroyers that are player useable. Else why would they have convoy escort keys in the help menu in game? Last I checked, subs where not great escort vessels...lol

As a U-boat fan, I'd love to see this happen. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.

If we get enough people to join the banwagon on this, UBI just might see the marketing of it and actually consider it. But like you said. I wouldnt hold my breath. But it is odd how a lot of those ports we now have in the Atlantic area that where not in the stock SH3 are in this game and there is no Atlantic Campaign ( Yet ).

Huh?
Retail releases, last I checked, were...
IL2: Sturmovik - Standalone game
IL2: Forgotten Battles - Standalone game
IL2: Ace Expansion pack - the ONLY add-on, but it didn't last long, as...
IL2: Gold - Standalone game (combination of previous two)
Pacific Fighters - Standalone game
IL2: 1946 - Standalone game
(Yes, of course I realize some could be combined...point is that Ubi didn't release any but one of the series as an 'add-on', all were sold as standalone games)
...etc
Heck, even look at the Rainbow Six games, or Ghost Recon, etc.
I really can't think of the last "add-on" UbiSoft put out to ANY title at all.
They really do seem to prefer re-using engines (perhaps with some updates) and selling new content then as new full standalone games.

Huh, interesting, I admit I didn't take a very close look at them. Perhaps it started out as a SH3 expansion but they decided to turn it into SH4 instead? A bit odd no matter what the reason unless Billy the World Guy was bored at 3 am and decied to go through and add a bunch of Atlantic ports.

IL2: Forgotten Battles - Standalone game ( This was multi compatable, Stand Alone or Add-on. If you used it as a stand alone you where screwed if you tried to play in the majority of online games via Hyperlobby as the standalone part of the disk did'nt allow you to use all the aircraft. Trust me, I made that mistake when I installed it. There are post way back all over the place for that. Pacific Aces was also a multi install Stand alone or add-on. Depended on how you want to install it.
Forgotten Battles only cost $29.95 as did Pacific Fighters and that isnt a full release price. The 1946 one is a stand alone but it combines all 5 of the series plus new aircraft but is also not a full price game, $29.95.

Considering the fact that some modders have already gotten some of the SH3 U-Boots ( well, minus there crews so halfway ) ported over and a lot of the other surface ships ported over but no damage models, it would not be to hard for them to expand the series real quick IMHO. But then again, Im not a programer.
Wouldn't mind heading to the Atlantic to take on some German DD's. Maybe the can give me a challenge. :arrgh!:

:rotfl: I came to this thread expecting to complain about people resurrecting dead ones again. Instead I find a good follow-up by the original poster.
Good call, SgtWalt65. I only hope it leads to that.:sunny:

Thanks Sailor for not flaming me.
Would be very cool to have a full WW2 Subsim to include all the different nations submarines and this game would be a good place to do it. Would live on in the history of video games for a very long time IMHO. Something like what the UBI / Maddox Games iL2 series has done for the airwar with all the different theaters of conflict in WW2 and a little beyond with the latest addon / stand alone being 1946.

Since you mention Rainbow Six....Ravenshield had addon released named Athena Sword.;)
And the earlier Ghost recon games had addons...Thunder Island amongst others.

Isn't that for the adversarial multiplayer mode in SH4?
SgtWalt65

Multiplayer in this game is somewhat lacking, so I never really gave much thought to the adversary aspect, but I suppose thats a possibility. But what would you be doing escorts with? Certainly not the strong point of a sub. Especially since its main roll is to remain as stealthy as possible. Stealthy is not an escorts strong point. :D
