Just what is the vsync doing for me if I check it on the options page?

Limits the framerate to your refresh rate.

Helps with "shearing" if your not having any problems with it leave it unchecked (shrug).

And this does what as far as FPS or clarity of the picture?

Shearing? What does this look like?

Imagine a photograph ripped in half and put back together a little off.

Except the lines would connect like this smeared or warped.

Has no real effect on "frame rates".

I think the guy means "tearing" which as you move the camera around would tear the image........hard to explain but easy to notice :)

SteamWake beat me to it

OK, cool. I did not have this issue with 1.1. I have the option checked in 1.2. I guess then I do not need this option checked as I do not have the tearing or ripped looking picture. Yes?

No not if your picture is fine when looking around...............I've had tearing alot in other games and v-sync sorts it out :)

Scroll down to second screenshot of mine. This was with the 1.1 patch. Pic looks good to me. I guess I do not need this option. Thanks for the help men!

Only notes CRT. I use a LCD. I'm turning this option off. Seems I do not need it.

Strange I too have an LCD and I need it :-?

Glad you don't :D

One thing I noticed, and maybe it's just me, but after fixing this problem in the config file in 1.1 it went away. But in 1.2 I still have shearing even with vsync enabled in the graphics options. I double-checked in the config file and it's still selected there too. Very annoying.

Not quite as annoying as the audio crackling I have to fight through but there I can't decide how much is SH4's fault and how much is the Vista/Creative debacle messing up my day. At least turning off some graphic options, yes graphic options, cut down on it enough so SH4's playable.

Using V-sync can also eliminate or at least minimise potential problems where frame-rates can sometimes vary from 2fps to over 100fps, which can cause instability in certain configurations. With V-sync enabled, the disparity between lower and upper limits is minimised, resulting in less unforeseen lock-ups and crashes. The down-side is that it "caps" or limits your maximum frame-rate to either your current refresh-rate, or half that value.

Vsync is one of those things you only need if you notice tearing and it bugs you. Generally it is only needed if you have a good PC that just dumps out frames. It will limit your framerate to your refresh rate.

It's hard to descibe tearing, best I can say is if you look from side to side and things rip, or blink. Kinda like if certain places of your screen are moving at a slightly different rate.

Usually it "should" not be noticeable except the loss of tearing. But if it's not bothering ya, best to leave it off:up:

I personally am getting ALOT of tearing and I thought vsync (both ingame and forcing in the driver CP) were unfunctional as I get no apperant effect. Any one got any ideas?

The only strange thing I see, when on the bridge, on the left lower corner and right lower corner, sometimes the water looks like jello when I'm turning my vision to either side. I do not recall seeing it last night with this option on. Perhaps than I do need it to a certain degree as this jello looking water for a seond or two is disconcerting.

Do you see this as you move the camera from left to right and vice versa? if so then I get that too! sorry no need to answer that as I re-read your post, but suffice to say I get it too and nothing as yet has got rid of it

I guess if your not taking a perfomance hit by having it on, why not (shrug).

LCD monitors receive new frames of information from the frame buffer of the video card. Therefore, when VSync is disabled, the video card can sometimes get a little ahead of things and when the LCD monitor indicates it is ready for a new frame during the interval blanking, the video card could then provide a partial new frame overlapping the older one. This results in picture tearing.

Enabling VSync resolves this issue, but it can significantly reduce FPS in doing so.

Leave it unchecked unless you feel the picture tearing is too intrusive.

Because V-sync itself is a performance hit. It's not like most video options that you want on if you possibly can. It's really not something you want on unless you trying to specifically fix something. It adds no visual quality other than limiting framerate. It's counter intuitive hence all the confusion about it sometimes. :88)

I really do not see tearing other than the weird jello water while on the bridge in the lower corners of the screen when moving my field of vision. This is the only place I get it. Not to much of a killer but noticable. I will turn it off as I do not believe I really need it.

Again, thanks for the information:up:

A good place to look for tearing is in the command room, rotate from left to right and I get tearing -even with vsync on:down: I think its due to high fps in there (80fps) and my monitor struggles to keep up.

but since there isnt alot to do in the command room now I dont spend alot of time there:up:

Can you up your refresh rate to compensate?

Now that just sucks. Since day one, I have my display refresh set at all the same. 75Hz. The same for my card and the game. I though maybe keeping them all at the same refresh rate would help me.

Odd, I'm getting crackling audio too after installing 1.2, and I also play on Vista.

As for Vsync, I still get some tearing even with it on, but its not noticable unless I'm zoomed right up against a Yamato, or something big.
