Funny thing is that my commanding officer on Gorch Fock II was Kapitän zur See John Schamong, the son of Oblt. z. S. Klemens Schamong.
He's currently (or at least was some time ago) german naval attache in Paris.

I knew his father had been a U-Boat commander, but I didnt know this story.
Trying to get an award for somebody who sank your own ship, now that is style....
Strange to read about the father of my old ships former CO in a NZ news item.

It made me think.

There's always a thin line and much grey area between what we call bravery, heroism, coincidence or outright insanity. And than I can't help feeling a bit lousy sitting in my comfortable armchair and replaying war with the help of a 100% inconsequential, 100% save and entertaining simulation tool like SH III. A war that was not at all entertaining but took away the lives of millions of young men and women and their chances to have a life, love and have a family. Remember, we are just the descendants of our fathers and grandfathers who fought and had the luck to survive.

Thanks for sharing.

I remember hearing about this some years ago. It's nice to see even at war an enemy can recognise bravery of thoese who oppose him, and willing to speak up and say it for others to hear.
