You force it from the video card driver. Both Antialiasing and Texture filtering.

Try enabling it through the graphics card's driver. Can't check because I'm at work, but like many games it may not have its own built-in FSAA.

Yeah, those 5 pics linked by Cowboy look horrible. Odd, considering they're at the lowest res too, 1024x768. Something's not right there, as 1.1 with environmenteal effects on looked much better then those.

Yeah, it may be I didn't unpause it to let the graphics refresh enough before I took the screenie. I was concentrating on the ship.

I can now play on my laptop!
Before the patch, game was unplayable at minimum graphics. Almost playable with no external camera.
After patch - minimum-to-moderate settings with 4X FSAA, environmental effects (but no fog!) and all seems good so far. As you can see, I can use the external cam.
This is good news I think for people with less-than high spec machines.

These are the settings you're looking for. 8x will give you best quality but slowest performance. 2x is best performance but lowest quality.

This is something you'll have to play around with on your rig, as there isn't really a "one size fits all" answer.
This guide can give you some color on what all those settings actually do:

On NVIDIA cards, most of the advanced settings are to solve particular problems, the settings to play with are:
anisotropic filtering, try 2x or 4x. more than that will impact FPS with no appreciable quality difference;
AA, try 2xQ or 4x,
vsync - force on, prevents screen tearing;
triple buffering - on, if vsync is on will improve FPS, however if it causes stutters, choose off.

If anyone thought FSAA wasn't worth it given the state of other bugs, I think these screens show why. Man that looks good, and it's not even moving.
I'm glad I've fixed my system and I'm now running overclocked at around 3 GHz (Core2 E6600) with a GF8800GTS so it ought to scream.
