OK, I apologise in advance for what is going to seem "negative", but my conclusions on 1.2 are best summarised by saying:
Thanks to the introduction of FSAA and proper higher resolutions, I am now able to see, in exquisite detail, the many and various fleas hopping around on this dog.....

Only one thing noticably broke for me in career mode. The hydrophone doesn't seem to work. I was submerged, stopped (truly 0 kts) in silent running mode. Periscope showed a destroyer no more than 750 feet away. But manually using home/end to point the hydrophone at it gave me no engine sounds. Clicking report contacts said no contacts..?
Another minor thing, I used to play fine with 3D sounds maxed, but now I can't hear torp explosions. I dropped it one notch and then I could hear them, so no big deal.
One other funny thing is that I saved at a port near Java, and when I resumed in 1.2 the port was filled with 3 enemy ships, docked. There I am, leaving the dock... they were sitting ducks which I sunk on my way out. I think they tweaked the enemy port takeover right on that point in my career so somehow I got saved into a base that we don't control anymore in 1.2. :)
My map still shwos Manila in my hands but the port is full of Japanese ships. I'm out of torps and can't do anything but sail away. Be nice if command would tell me that over the FOX so I can update my map. On to Fremantle now.
Also, there is still no explosion sounds for me either. The big flash goes off and then a few seconds later I hear teh explosion. Now if I was a mile away, I would say OK cool accustic sound idea, but I'm actually about 300 yrds so I should hear and see flash the same time but dont.
In closing, your statement about the detroyer. Was it moving? I found that the sim (if you can call it that) has a nasty habit of thinking that a detroyer not moving is in silent running. This is bunk as the detroyer can't do silent, but they can go passive which is two very different things and try to listen for you. However, you should be able to hear them setting and listening for you if your that close. Another feature I trust the Modders to fix before the creators do.

Some have posted that in 1.0 and 1.1 the aircraft seemed to have a very good air to surface search radar and also "Jedi seeing skills" about your route(lots of planes that know :ping: exactly:ping: where you are). Anyone notice anything close to that in 1.2?

Airplanes seem somewhat less attracted to me when flying around but quite a few still seem to bore right in.

From my experience this has been greatly improved. I had several fly within a mile or two that kept on going (ie they were not on a direct course for my ship which was always the case in the past). Worst thing I've had so far was during a convoy attack where I was in the middle of it I heard the propellers above and had a bomb dropped on my sub. That got the attention of the DD's nearby.....VERY COOL. :rock:

First of all, my apologies in advance - I'm sure this has been addressed elsewhere, I just haven't been able to spot it.
I realize FSAA is supported in the new patch, but I am unable to find where this option is turned on...
Is this an option that is enabled within the game - if so, where?
I have an ATI 1950 XTX 512MB card. Perhaps the FSAA must be enabled in the ATI control panel? If this is the case, is there a way to make this application specific so that the FSAA is automatically forced on SH4 only - and not other programs?
Cheers

Don't know if you can setup specific game profiles with the CCC - never used it. I am using ATT (http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/) (Ati Tray Tools) which does have profiles.

Force it...This means open up your video card driver setup and where the AA is setting and select. I use Nvidia and I'm sure ATI is the same.

Open your control panel up top there is a tab called "profiles". You can create settings specifically for this game.

:rock: I just want to make a mention of somethings that has made me very satisfied about this game.
1. The amount of Support from all is IMPRESIVE!!!!
2. Even folks who are not happy with the game in its current state, STILL get useful asnwers.
3. Newbies like me learn alot about the computers we buy but don't always know what it does thinngy things and get info that makes sense out of all the techno talk.
It has just been refreshing to see so many people "outside" of UBI that have made this game not just more fun, but informative. :rock: And yes not all is fixed, but I do think the modders and 1.3 will make it better. I think UBI is getting things handled on this game, but I wish alittle more testing would have been done by them instead of us.
BTW I am playing on my laptop and all is great, but on my "Fancy" rig it ok, but with all turned off. still a work in progress.
Laptop Dual core intel t5200 1.60....2 gb ram 533mhz/ 256mb nvida gforce 7900 vista
Fancy rig dual core 3.0 ghz 2 gib ram 256 nvida 6800 windowsxp the hits fr with any options turned on makes it hard to play. Latest drivers all installed, defrag so on and so. Just can't get any more out, dont know what else to dao. Have reall all post I can find, vsync and cfg file tweaks all done too. LoL I just play on the laptop. anyway Thanks all:D

Sound travels roughly 1,000 feet per second. 300 yards away is about a second delay. If it was more like 500 yards, you're closer to 2 seconds. May seem weird, but that's realistic (FYI, sound travels closer to 5,000 feet per second underwater!).
If you'd like instant boom with your flash (i.e., unrealistic), try disabling the realistic travel time option for sound and see if that fixes it.
Good luck!

Hmm, I'll have to revisit the realistic sound now that 1.2 is out. I had several problems back with 1.0, never bothered with it in 1.1 (due to my CTD's), but I'll have to give it a shot now!

its a format for working out a solution
R=range
B=bearing rate
R=RSA(relative speed across)
O=OSA(own speed across)
T=TSA (targets speed across)
S= speed
A=ATB
R=reciprocal bearing
C=course
and DOT which distance off track which is always handy
range = 2x RSA /BEARING RATE
BEARING RATE = 2X RSA/ RANGE
RSA= BEARING RATEXRANGE/2
OSA =SIN REL BRG X OWN SPEED
TSA = SIN ATB X TGT SPEED
SPEED =TSA/SIN ATB
ATB =TSA/SPEED INV SIN
DOT = RANGE X SIN ATB
THIS IS HOW WE GET TO A BEARING RATE ONLY SOLUTION IN THE RN SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO GUESTIMATE SPEED AND RANGE HERES AND EXAMPLE
own course 030 speed 8 tgt range 16k bearing rate 1.0L bearing 060 speed 16 find tgt course ( if you go down the tote same directions add different subtract opposite if you go up the tote differnt add same subtract)
RANGE 16000YDS
BEARING RATE 1.0L
RSA 8L
OSA 4L
TSA 12L
SP 16
ATB 48PT
RECIP BRG 240
COURSE 288 (pt atb plus stb subtract)
DOT 12k
you can do this on a calculator using the formulae or on the old bearing rate widger standard issue on RN subs or if you good enough in your head
for intance sin atb 30 =.5 or half so if the range is 10k then the dot =5k( dot is a estimate of how close the target is going to come it dosent take into account own speed so it may come closer but its a quick way of making sure your safe)
*Small meek voice*
So sorry I asked. :doh:
Thanks a bunch. :know:

After patching SH4 I can no longer use the SHIFT-F2 view while in outside view of my own sub or other ships to get a free camera that you could use for zooming in much closer than the standard F11-camera. I REALLY liked the outside-SHIFT-F2 view because you could take great screenies while "walking around" other ships, and I really miss it. After patching, SHIFT-F2 always takes you back to the "free cam" in the internal F2-view...
:nope:
Confirmed , it was indeed a nice feature but fell overboard in the patch :nope:
Mud
Bummer.... I really loved that feature. Hopefully this is only a matter of some cfg file and can be modded back in.

I'm using RFB v1.2 from Beery and the shift-F2 works.

I hate to be annoying but lets read the manual " automamed method (of target's speed determination *vk) is implemented in the game....This method is heavenly dependent of the accurancy of your range correct estimation"
I think that permament reminding to devs about this official(!!!) feature is necessary!!!! solve chronometer / target 's speed problem.
IMHO yes graphic issue is important, but I think devs (with all respect to the great job they done) have to put more priorities to the annonced game features like one mentioned above and many others like radar/sonar bugs and dateline career.
Best Regards

Sorry if these have been brought up before, just wanted to weigh in with my probs I'm still experiencing after patching 1.2:
1. Radar (ya I know everyone knows)
2. Planes being spotted and sometimes my crew says ship spotted
3. Plane goes down and often times ship spotted call as he parachutes. Mucho annoying.
4. You sink a ship, he launches a liferaft or dingy and SHIP SPOTTED! Very scary when you are wondering where the DD's are.
5. I put 4 torps into a small freighter tonight and the bastard still would not go down.
torp 1: no effect, no flames, speed held at 8 knots.
torp 2: no flames, speed reduced to 7 knots.
torp 3: minor flames, speed back up to 8 knots.
torp 4: heavy flames, seems to have taken on some water as it is riding kinda low, speed to 7 knots.
are my torps faulty? exploding just before contact perhaps?
Also just FYI that small freighter was part of a convoy guarded by 3 Mitsuki(sp?) DD's, all 3 of which came at me head on and I blasted them to pieces with the deck gun. I engaged them at 4k yards and none of them got a hit on me. I remember SH3 the merchants were rather innacurate but the DD's would mess you up something awful.
6. Planes seem to start coming every 2 hours or so and just simply do not stop. I submerge for an entire run of the batteries at 1/3 speed, resurface, and continue on my way and in about 4-6 hours, another plane shows up. And I'm 500+ KM from land. I don't know what the operating range of these puppies is but good lord the ocean is a big place you think they would have SOME difficulty finding me. It's a long trip home from Hiroshima harbor, and while I don't mind some harrasment, diving every 2 hours is a little crazy. I started fighting the bastards, my new tactic will be splashing the entire Japanese air force.
7. Speaking of splashing planes, on the twin 20mm AA position on the Gar class sub (only one I use, dunno if others are affected), when I man the AA position and elevate more than 5 degrees the wall surrounding the gun emplacement actually clips into view and blocks my sights. The crew are a better shot than me so work aound is to let ensign skippy go to town. I usually only man the AA for shooting up liferafts and such, but it would be nice.
Those are all the problems I can think of. Here are some things I would really like to see implemented.
In game tooltips or info panels describing the various classes of subs in detail (max speed surfaced and submerged, operating range, torp tubes, length, displacement, a picture would be nice... I like to cruise in style.
SH3esque tooltips on torpedo reloading page showing estimated time until reload instead of the pretty torpedo loading animation which tells me jack sh!t.
Some sort of UI that replaces the 4 button FUEL/BATT/CO2/AIR panel with something that shows either everything at once or two at a time (I only care about FUEL/BATT 99% of the time).
Some more info on fuel such as a physical remaining amount, estimated consumption by route completion... basically what I am running in to is missions from Pearl Harbor to Hirohito's back yard and all the way back. It's a long damn way. I have enough fuel to get there, screw around for a while, and when I'm at about 50% fuel it's time to start heading back. I don't like to do it but I usually tool around at 1/3. Coming back from Japan on 1/3 takes FOOORRREEEEEEEVER. So if I have enough fuel to do it at 2/3 or STD, I would like to, but the current fuel guage and CE reporting system does not give me enough info to let me know if I can do it.
So I run in to problems like I did tonight where I got allllll the way back to Midway and ran out of fuel 540km short of the dock. Batteries some how still kicked in for what seemed like a longer amount of time than they normally would last, but that only got me a fraction of the remaining distance. I can't call for resupply, I can't end the patrol, nothing. All because my CE is too lame to run some numbers.
Another request would be some cleaning up of the damage control situation. I don't understand a damn thing that's going on with that screen. There are jobs that show up as damage occurs, and I can click and drag them to the top of the list. But there are different shades of red and only certain ones have the little black bar filled in with red, and only about 15%. What does that mean? Documentation? The time it will take to repair? Documentation? Also on that crew screen is the damage control party boxes, which even after calling up a damage control crew, is empty. Documentation? So what gives does someone go get the gimp who then repairs my boat? Will it go faster if I manually drag my guys into the box? Is there a way I can automagically do it? I liked on SH3 how you could double click the name of a section of the ship and it would populate it to the best of its ability.
Anyway, I apologize again if this is all rehashed, I tried looking at several pages of this post, but admittedly not the entire thing.

Well being a NEWBIE (that means no one's going to pay too much attention to this!) However since Patch 1.2 I appear to have more niggling problems than with Patch 1.1.
I am modded up now, as per choice, of appropriate 1.2 functional mods. I have taken each mod off, one at a time, run the game each time but still find .....(a) Far more aircraft than I think the Japanese had anyway buzzing me. (b) Attacked and sunk by ghost ships. (c) The Chrono is pretty to look at but absolutely useless. (d) Damage Control is a mess. (e) I lose Gun Crews for Deck Gun when crewing up, but "someone" still mans the gun AND fires at targets. (f) There are many cries from the crew "We're taking Damage sir"...when nothing is visible. Alongside this dialog there are too many repeats of orders. (g) Have radar reports, no radar fitted or with Radar (Air warning) fitted unable to switch Radar "on/off", yet still get reports of SHIPPING...never aircraft. They only come from the bridge. (h) Good torpedo shots in both Manual and Auto now....but....1 fish sinks a 9000tonner....6 shots at a smaller vessels and it still ploughs the ocean at 8-9knts.
The only compensation at present is listening to the radio and the old time shows, (even I can remember!) THANK YOU Tedhealey and Bunkeraat........
It is not generally my forte to moan, rather to sit back and say "Well it will be fixed one day"....but really this game takes the biscuit at the moment. All the hard work by Modders (God Bless 'em) seems to be thwarted by internal blips within the game of the Developers. If I bought an expensive item in a shop or supermarket and it did'nt come up to spec, I could return it and replace it or at least get a refund....not so here.

I patched to 1.2 after a clean install but I am getting random CTD's all the time, they don't seem to be tied to anything in particular though -
1. Looking at navmap with TC at 1024 and CTD
2. On surface approaching a convoy CTD
3. Periscope depth aproaching a convoy CTD
4. Aproaching base CTD
5. Fired a torpedo, torpedo blew up right in front of sub, CTD
6. Went to Internal view CTD
And various others, they don't seem to be attached to a key command or anything though, it just CTD's at random.
I had no problems at all with 1.1 and I have now gone back to that instead of 1.2 and no crashes at all again.
My resolution is 1680 x 1050 @ 60hz, FSAA@2x AA@off with a
P4 3.2HT, 7800GSOC, 2gb Ram, X-Fi Extreme Gaming
I tried lowering the resolution to 1024 x 768, looked crap on a 22" widescreen but still got random CTD's
Anyone with similar problems?
You sound just like me ....
I have defraged the HD, upped the cache, and reinstalled SHiV and then applied the 1.2 patch. I have never once managed to get more than 4 days into a mission before it just cuts out on me and CTD.
Any advice on a cache setting for a 1gig system?
Thanks,

It is the game protection, random numbers, 2d crews, and perhaps other hidden effects. The fade protection.

I have but one question for patch 1.2
Is the FSAA automatic, or is there a check box I need to search for, because I see nothing about it on my options menu, also, the resolution menu didn't change at all
"... Any advice on a cache setting for a 1gig system?..."
1.5 times your installed memory is what MS suggests and that has worked for me for years. If you decide to create a fixed cache, make sure you do it with a defragged HD and the cache will stay defragged.
Now, if you want a performance enhancement, create the cache on a non-C hard drive (another hardware mechanism, not just another partition on the same drive) and Windows will be able to R/W cache and deliver OS and files functionality at the same time. When the cache is on your C drive, the head has to move more to manage cache and game file access causing long load times for large files.
"Windows" managed cache is a dynamic cache in that it shrinks and grows as needed by the system. Although this works OK for people with very small hard drives (this is a holdover from win98 days) it causes a lot of fragmenting due to the swap file constantly changing size. Typically when XP installs, it inspects your system and sets a size near the ideal 1.5 ratio and unless your system changes, this cache doesn't really change much (if at all) so it's debatable if messing with the cache size on XP with low mem systems really helps that much. Getting it moved onto another drive DOES help a lot though whatever your configuration. If you are getting low memory alerts, fix your cache. If not, you may not want to mess with it unless you are sure what you are doing.
For what it's worth, getting your machine bumped up to 2 gigs is the best thing you can do to help demanding games besides an expensive Vidcard. If your installed RAM is a little slow (by todays standards 400 MHz or less is slow) then this would be a good opportunity to get two gigs of faster RAM rather than just add more of the same speed.

Dammit! I bought the bloody game from a store. If there's one thing I absolutely HATE, it's getting treated as a criminal when I've done nothing wrong. I mean if they must have copy protection the least they should do - the very least - is make sure it works properly and doesn't inconvenience legitimate users. If they can't do that, then they shouldn't use copy protection and they should take their chances. Heck, bung another couple of dollars on the price to offset the loss in revenue - anything. Just give me a game that when I pay for it it plays and doesn't make me out to be a thief.

If a specific game is not swapping you to disk, more ram will simply sit there unused while you play. However, SH4 will definately be swapping quite a bit on 1G, and even a bump to 1.5G will help you a lot. I find the game footprint to be 1.2G on XP Pro.
Any speed of Ram is better than the fastest disk. You have to make a judgement call on replacing all your ram to upgrade its speed.
If you are stuck with 1G for whatever reason, as your question implies, then -Pv-'s advice on setting your swap is very good.

-Pv-
Thanks for the excellent response (from you and the others) ....
I infact placed an order yesterday for 2 gigs, Matched sticks of Coursair XMS Twinx2048-3200C2. It seems that Corsair brand works the best on my particular board (Asus A7N8X-E) and from reading up on the forums there it seems this pair works well. It seems by spec it can take somewhat faster ram but many people were reporting bad errors and when installing this had no issues.
Thanks again - I really would like to be able to play this game.

I have but one question for patch 1.2
Is the FSAA automatic, or is there a check box I need to search for, because I see nothing about it on my options menu, also, the resolution menu didn't change at all
It must be forced through your video card control center.
Nvidia has a option to choose AA either by "Application Controlled" or by 2x, 4x, 8x,
You do not want to choose application controlled and must select either 2x, 4x, or whatever your video card control panel offers. The higher the better but also the higher the more impact it has on frame rate.
Hope this helps..

Again thanks, I'll be posting an updated list later on today. Issue 11 is being removed and I've updated issue 31) to cover the whole transparency problem.
In addition I am including a query section: (any help would be appreciated!)
Query:
Can anyone confirm that item 61) is actually a bug?
Issue 38) Fix the radar and sonar,... There are other issues which refer to this 2) 19) 67) and 68).. Can someone provide a detailed explanation on what needs fixing that isn’t covered (if anything)?
If anyone knows of any workarounds or mods which fix any of the issues above please provide links and I’ll include them in the next (exciting instalment)

1.2 installed and I can now watch it freeze to a complete stop just like before. Just like 1.0 and 1.1. Absolutely no difference at all. Freeze happens almost at once. Forces a reboot. :down: Totally worthless.
what are your system specs and do you have all the latest drivers.
@Hans Schultz: ASUS P4S800D-X, Pent 4 3Ghz, GeForce 6800, SBAudigy, 2GB system Ram. Very latest drivers installed for GeForce 6800 and SBAudigy.
With the very latest drivers, the game will now let me play around in Sub School but I still get the freezes. Usually when I am sitting at an AA gun or looking through the attack periscope. I have ONLY tried the Sub School so far since I don't intend to do anything else without stopping the freezes. They are the same freezes that force a complete reboot. :dead:

Have you checked that your graphics card fan is running normally and is clean. You could also try checking that the heat sinks haven't warped.
Another suggestion - run Prime95 on a torture test for 4+ hours.. Ideally overnight. Any lockups or errors will be usually caused by CPU overheating although sometimes ram or mainboard.

After that run 3dmark01 for several hours as well. The prime will give you a great stressor on the cpu/ram/mobo, while 3dmark01 will torture your video card.
I'd also disable any special sound effects in game (such as the time delay thing), and decrease the number of sounds/etc. Dumb down your game and then slowly build it back up. You might be able to isolate the component/setting that is causing issues.

Out of interest one of my kids computers the other day kept consistently coming up with an overheating problem with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The odd thing was that it was the only game he had that did it (Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander could run forever with no problem!). It turned out that the system really was overheating but that was the only game that pushed the system to breaking point. I replaced the ludicrously hot raptor drives with a single drive and the problem went away.
anybody had this problem since 1.2 ....on returning to brisbane after an 11th tremendous mission found i could only refit or postpone not dock, very frustrating even trucked off to other ports to no avail .do you think there could be away around this prob
UPDATE
after starting two more careers was frustrated plus confused as to reason for not being able to dock back at brisbane in my first career[11 missions,1941-april43]so i reloaded save game but went straight to freemantle[instead of pearl or mid]this time ...alas was able to dock hooray "not" as i was repremanded and retired.would add i was out of base but 3 weeks and had sunk 154600 tons....go figure and all i got for it was a stinking statue and stories to tell my kids..............no shiny medals even!!!!!

I remember Doom 3 having a similar effect on people's video cards. They were fine on all sorts of stability/torture tests but somehow the D3 engine pushed it uniquely over the top.

Silent Hunter III had 4 patches I believe. Also, the Devs let us know that a particular patch, was the final patch. I know all these issues will be dealt with and I know there were time constraints and budgets involved. I'm just glad the Sim Gods allowed this great series to continue and have complete faith that all the issues will be dealt with in a timely manner.

Got the patch, installed it. Got the latest graphic drivers, installed them. Still going down for no apparent reason during a patrol off the Marians. Sinking 2 passenger/troop carriers, diving to 70 mtrs and then......straight to the celler.
Maybe this Silent Hunter 4 is just a bad product!!??
I had some trouble with SH4 too in the start. CTDs and radar not working after 1.2 was the two biggest gripes. That and repeating missions.
It all got fixed by uninstalling the game completely, install latest drivers for my nVidia card, reinstall the game, reboot, install patch 1.1, reboot, then patch 1.2 and a last reboot. No more CTDs, no more repeating missions. Then finally installing the Flavoured to Taste mod, and presto, functioning radar.
I'm all happy now :)
Happy happy happy :sunny:
Now I just need to get my ISP to fix my line. I get constant disconnects at a rate of at least once every second hour. Often significantly shorter intervals. Have ruined my online gaming fun (CoD2 & BF2). Get that problem sorted, and I'll set sail online as well :)

Seems to be a domino effect problem with bulkhead damage.
I the bulkhead has been damaged, but repaired in the same mission - it would seem like the integrity of the ship is a lot weaker.

Did you ever overclock your video card or was it overclocked when you were playing SH4? If so back the OC down to get stable performance and try again. If stock, you can do a couple of things (while waiting for your new card to arrive).
1. remove the fan and reapply thermal paste to the chip and memory modules
2. make sure any auxillary power connectors are fully connected (6800GT should have 1, at least mine does)
Basically if 3dMark is crashing your computer its likely one of 2 things:
1. video card (due to overheating)
2. power supply
It's very possible that your power supply could be crapping out which would cause these crashes in game. Hopefully when you get your new card everything works perfectly, if it doesn't, you might just have one more purchase to get this game going....:up:

All the others will end up at desktop : Career, Quick Mission.... all the rest.
