View Full Version : X-play SHIV Review
Fell asleep in front of the tube last night and woke up to SHIV being reviewed on X-play (must have been subliminal ). Anyway the "reviewer" is driving around on the surface engaging warships, and complaining about the boats maneuverability in battle. Wonder where he got that idea . . could it be. . oh . .maybe ..THE BOX COVER ART? Then he mentions as a side note that you can also submerge, and blah blah blah. Ended up giving it a poor rating. Not that I would expect any less, but these button pushers just dont get it, and UBI is not helping with every pre-release screen shot showing a major surface engagement with a sub plopped down in the middle of it all.
Edit: To be fair, it looks like they gave it a 3 out of 5, but watching the review definately does'nt leave one with the warm fuzzies.

Wow, and he gets paid to do that?
Good to know that submarines can choose to submerge though.

I was in my local compuiter game shop called "game" in scotland and SH4 has dropped to number 19 in there gamer chart was talkign to the manager and he says about 75% of there copys have been handed back due to all the bugs etc so there sitting with a big ole pile of SH4 games and no one is buying them. Also theeese no brainer reviews dont help at all it would help if they got some one with some knowledge in the genre to review it instead of some muppet:damn:

Uncompleted game + crap reviews = Ubi with a wang where the sun don't shine.
And no heath packs or power ups to boot. What kind of game is this anyways? I don't think the word "simulation" is in their vocabulary.
You can lay the blame for the poor "casual" gamer reception on two things
1) bugs
2) no training materials
You simply can not put this sim in front of anyone who isnt one of us nutz and expect them to struggle through it. Which is a shame really, because with the automated aids this game can be a lot of fun and not very difficult.

And if stores in the USA would take returns...Im sure there would have been A LOT more SH4 copies heading back to UBI....
UBI is just killing themselves with this garbage. Where is the pride in the quality of work one produces?? IF I ran my business like UBI does, I would be OUT of business in a month or two...
Not that IM defending the dork from X-Play..... he is a total gamer/console player moron....

What if SHIV will be a flop? Sales crashing?
I'm not too sure Ubi wants to make a SHV then?:-?

X-Play has no credibility in my opionion, unless it is a FPS they don't really care

Sh4 basically has been left wide open to criticism i mean here we are waiting on patch 1.2 which ius going to be 200 meg plus so in the first 2/3 weeks of it being out over 300 meg of patches with more to follow. Afriend jokingly said to me and i qoute " at this rate SH4 will use about another gig of space on your hard drive due to patches" So the bit that annoys me ubi pay guys to to the bug finding guess they must have been off sick the last 6 or 12 months:damn: :damn: :damn:

Ubi makes sure they have products released at the end of every 90 published accounts cycle, whether it's ready or not.

True, BUT does everyone know that?
They (like any other review) have an influence over potential buyers!

X-Play gave SH3 a very high score when it came out. I've found they often rate games quite fairly, giving time between console games and PC. They are actually pretty rigorous in their ratings.

Or yet another Mario themed game, which they seem to love.
They even did a comedy bit showing CTD after CTD after CTD after CTD. Followed by a rant that they are fed up with the whole WWII genre! It was'nt pretty.

QFT on all accounts.
And like Sir Big Jugs implies, UBI might not want to make another SH, or support SH4 for very long because of dipping sales. Which I don't think is/will be caused by the genre or time period, it will be because of poor quality control on UBI's part. Morgan and Adam might be tired of WWII, but there is a huge population of gamers still interested in it.

Look at the age demographic x-play is directed at, then you will understand more of the reviews. The gamers that generally watch that show for the reviews are of the younger age that are not really interested in simming. It's probably best they aim their reviews to that demographic so they don't get hate mail from kids who buy Silent Hunter expecting some sort of arcade submarine shoot em up.
That and Adam/Morgan are a couple of annoying schmucks.....
Real simmers know where to go for accurate and intelligent reviews. And for me, those places are most certainly not the joke of a station like G4, Gamespot, and the like.....

Ok does anyone have proof SH4 is selling badly? I saw a lot of copies in stores to replace ones that had vanished a while ago.

I'll confess I haven't seen this episode but I generally like X-Play. If they're aiming at teenyboppers I guess the in-joke references to political and obscure cultural figures of bygone years implies the kids of today are much more savvy than I give them credit for. I laugh at the jokes but I do wonder who else gets 'em. Dennis Miller maybe?
Look, as has been pointed out X-Play did give SH3 four stars and it's hardly Final Fantasy fare. I'm guessing whoever writes the reviews had a very bad day and might not have gotten the premise of the game. Other folks have pointed out in this thread that the manual is really lacking. There is a particular way to approach playing subsims and if the manual doesn't provide for absolute beginners they're not necessarily going to get what they're supposed to be doing or how best to do it. If it was my review I'm sure a few strategically inconvenient CTDs would have me angry enough to only focus on the bad aspects of the game myself.
That said, it doesn't sound like they gave it a fair shot and that's not too unusual. I like the show, it's got personality, but I don't always pay attention to the reviews. They like things I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole and they'll rag on things for issues I find marginal. Everyone has a bad day sometimes and it sounds like Adam and Morgan were having a bad one with Silent Hunter.

Funny, I've had 2. Once when using the stadimeter (which has been fixed) and once while using the A key (also fixed.)

Great. Given that statement, I'm sure they gave it a nice unbiased review. What a bunch of idiots.

Agreed. I've only had the A key Crash. I have found SHIV to be far more stable than SHIII on my rig.

True, but tell that to the "Casual Gamer" who unfortunately we will all need in the form of sales to ensure some developer continues to produce simulations. This is just the kind of drivvle they dont need to see.

Well, even the casual gamer, if concerned about reviews, should use more than one source as information before making a purchase. But I agree that uninformed reviews can hurt the sales of a game if taken for cold hard fact.
I remember a Gamespot review for a game called Over -G fighters for the Xbox 360. the reviewer actually said that only having a realistic amount of missles made the game boring. So instead of the game hitting the mark in the area of realism, it missed it by making it boring.
One reviewer cannot possibly have an unbiased and educated review about every genre on the market. When that happens you get ridiculous comments about a sub being able to submerge as "nifty"
Its X-Play, an unimportant show on a network no one watches. We probably have more members than X-Play has audience. Didn't see it but if it was like their other reviews it started with a mindless rant about reviewing another WW2 game, then Adam makes an anti-Iraq war or anti-Bush statement, or maybe he was creative and makes a Dick Cheney joke, then a stupid skit with an intern all the while they replay the same 3 second in-game sound clip over and over and if we're lucky they didnt do a gay joke about seamen.
