View Full Version : Beginner Questions
Successful mission expectations on max realism (minus the external camera view). First patrol, grid AM18, total tonnage sunk 33,500. No deck gun available due to bad weather conditions. Most ships sunk were one fish hits and none took more than two. Returned to base and the crew was awarded metals but NONE for me. What tonnage numbers are required for the captain to receive a medal?
Medals. Do crew members get a benefit from me pining the medal on them? I was not a fan of the crew management system until I ended the patrol and was able to hand out the medals. Very nice.
Credit for delayed sinkage? If you strike a ship and it will “eventually” sink… Do you get credit for it if you leave the area? Or is it a question of… does a falling tree make a sound if no one is there to see it?
Determining the UBoats heading. I’m having trouble reading the numbers on the small and fuzzy directional compass. Is there a way to have the Navigator call out your current heading?

Welcome,
I don't have all your answers, but here's a site that has been invaluable to me:

You can see how much renown you need for medals, promotion, etc..

I'm not sure but I think it's about 50000. Probably you'll find the answer in the manual.
Do crew members get a benefit from me pining the medal on them?
Yes, it takes longer till they are exhausted.

You need to be "near". When I asked the same question someone told me one should get the credit as long as you're around 30 ki,lometers near the sunken ship.

Check the mod forum, there should be a slide out console available. That compass is much bigger.
When you are logged in, on top of the window you'll find a search function. There are a lot of "noob here, have a question" posts. Check them, many guys have the same questions in the beginning, probably you'll find your answers in those posts.

33,500 ton on your first Mission is very impressive, pat yerself on your back but no Promotion.
I sank a Convoy for 83,000 ton and no Promotion but dished out 4 Knights Crosses [nice]; issued them to the 'eyes and ears' Brigade  .
Less Fatigue from them [or is it cos they drink more caffeine than the rest of the Crew :hmm: ]
Anyway, as Comrade Jim[buna] says .. sink em all !

Take Care,
Stoli There are two ways to determine the heading.
1. You can go to your UZO or your Periscope, point it at exactly 0 degrees and then press the "=" key. This key tells your CE to turn the boat to the heading that your Periscope or UZO is pointing at. Since 0 degrees is the same course that you're on he'll just repeat your current course.
2. The 2nd way is to download one of the mods out there that add the large slide out dials. In particular the navigation dial is much easier to both read, and to set courses on.
There is the original from way back. It involves alot of manual code swapping in the menu_1024_768.ini file. Sadly I can't seem to find a stand alone mod that is for stock SH3 that doesn't involve file editing on your part. However if you use GWX then you have a few options. Theres also one for NYGM.
