Hello everyone, :|\\

My instincts have had me to present 2 questions, one here another, of the same ilk on the SH3 threads.

My questions for YOU, the simmers:
Who if ANY of you actually served on a WWII or Cold war or Nuclear (modern) sub?

I ask this because some posters, most, seem to know what the heck they say when speaking of sub tech or warfare strategy issues and BTW...for the bitchers out there, thank UBIsoft for producing a subsim whose genre would have probably have died out in the early 90's. Thank you UBIsoft!

Slowly sinking into the Atlantic..........hellas1 :|\\ Until I post again............

(Sucky Job) Can't wait for April of next year when I can go back to a boat, trying for the USS VIRGINIA

For those of you guys that did sevice, what do you think of SH-4?

Tell you what, went to the mod forum, picked the ones that help or fix the game in it's present state, LUV it after using the mods. I am sick and tired of all thse people BITCHING endlessly about this and that. I play the game [thanks to to the MOD folks] to no end with NO PROBLEMS.

I am sick and tired of reading hundreds of posts of people ragging.

It's a good game [after the mod fixes]. Cut them some slack for a little while. Patience is a VIRTUE.

SubSim.com will see a contribution soon from me. Asshats bitch and moan and NEVER contribute nothing other than their rants.

Remind me to post a picture of an asshat, if you share my feelings.

I was Royal Navy, a Cold War Warrior, surface ships, mostly minesweepers. I did do an underwater warfare course that got me a couple of days seagoing experience in subs, an "A" boat and a "T" boat.

I have also visited the "Vesikko", the Finnish Type IIA, the "Alliance" at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and the "Lionfish" at battleship Cove, MA. I hope to get to see the U 505 in a couple of months time.

I wanted to join the German Navy when I was conscripted, but they turned me down (to tall at 6' 1". Submariners have to be short  ), so I ended up as an AA gunner (Gepard SPAAG). But we used periscopes to lock on targets, does that count?;)

As former tall ship sailor (ship's company of Gorch Fock II), I think I was the exact opposite of a submariner:rotfl:
Lots of rooms (sometimes 40 meters below you), lots of spit and polish and absolutely no connection to real warfare...
But I've visited some type 206 subs (212s were still on the drawing board in 1999) and known some submariners. Everybody tried to visit subs when Gorch Fock was drydocked the Navy Arsenal in Kiel. Great guys, those submariners.

Sub Sims - great fun but in most cases not terribly realistic.

Too easy. Too many targets. But then no one would play a really realistic sub sim - they'd get bored stiff and quit after the first 30 minutes. And then there's the things guys do in a sim would end up in real life with you dead or court martialed.

I've been on that sub too, it's only about 15 minutes from my house. It's docked at Long Beach next to the Queen Mary and only costs like $10-15 to enter. Nearly all of main body of the sub is open to explore, and there's a lot to see. There's a command compartment up a ladder that you cannot enter, unfortunately, but it's no reason not to make the trip.

The best part is that it is unguided, often there's nobody inside, and you can stay inside as long as you want. There's an annoying voiceover running the whole time, unfortunately, with an actor's cheesy russian accent making witty comments about each compartment and what life is like on the sub. It's really, really cheesy. Bring an iPod and a soundtrack of sub engine sounds with you to really enjoy the experience. :)

You can enter some of the rooms with bunks, the mess hall, sit down and really get a feel for what it's like to be there. The whole thing reeks of diesel fuel even though it hasn't been ran in years. They have a cheeky souvenier shop but it actually has some nice stuff, like replica crew wear (mostly just hats I think, no full uniforms or anything).

It's not the kind of thing you can schedule a whole day of activities around, even if you're sub-obsessed like us. But the Queen Mary is right next door to fill the rest of the time (costs a lot more though. You can always walk or drive a few minutes away and just hang out in the beautiful Long Beach marina to fill the day.)

I hear the sub may not be there much longer. http://www.russiansublongbeach.com/

Here is a link to a story about the USS Tusk and the USS Cochino. The Cochino was sunk and several men were lost from both boats. It is a New York Times link and you may have to "register" at NY Times to access it. The registration is free, at least it was when I registered. If you don't want to register or cannot for some reason, I have the story saved as a Word document file so forward me your email address and I'll attach the file and reply. The story takes place in 1949, a year after I was born.

Served on the USS Blackfin SS322, 1954 to late 1959, out of Pearl Harbor. Diesel Engineman 1st Class. Transfered to the USS Bang SS385, New London, Conn.
Made 3 West Pacific cruises on the Blackfin, went no where on the Bang except up in the Barrents Sea, and under the ice pack for a couple of days scouting.

Hit all major ports in Japan and cruised the inland sea going to Korea and that was a nice trip to see all of the islands around the south side of Japan. Made port calls in Korea, Tiawan, Hong Kong, Phillipines, Guam, Okinawa and in Australia, Brisbane and Newcastle. We had some good times in most of the ports.

Had to get out in 1961 due to sickness as I did want to stay in and make a career out of it but lady luck didn't hit me right. Met a lot of good guys and still keep in touch with a couple of the old boat guys.

Diesel Boats stank something bad from all of the fumes and it did get into your cloths. Sure could not wash that smell off of you.

I wanted to, but was forced out of the Navy at 18 cause I'm color blind and MEPS screwed up my paperwork. Long story, but its not my fault. I do want to go back, but being colorblind makes it difficult.

I was a sub volunteer.

Also, thank you for your service to all of you, serving all of our nations, keeping the seas safe. Godspeed to you all

You betcha I served on submarines ... I sure didn't know so many others sub vets were in here too ...

I just posted a sea story over in general topic's ... we ought to start a sea story thread, uh?

Here it is for your viewing pleasure: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=112107

I served on the USS Salmon SS- 572 (63-65)
USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 Blue crew (66-70)
USS Sam Houston SSBN 609 Blue crew (70-71)

Sonarman was my game and getting it right the first time was my aim, but we did lose a few wires while telling sea stories on watch ... those guys came right out of our baffles ... Honest sir

Nice to see so many true blue submariners here. It was a toss up for me between Navy and Air Force. Decided I didnt want to be cooped up on a ship for 6 months at a time so went Air Force. Retired a couple years ago.

I served on a Minesweeper - FGS Frauenlob, 7.MSG, Neustadt, Holstein - yes, the very Neustadt from SH3-training. Crew of 24 - Maybe one reason why I still prefer submarines like the Typ II for SH3 :p

I heard that our old subroc version could kill anything within 50 miles or at least knock all of their electronics out, causing them to go blind.

I'm afraid I might be way to busy on my first patrol back to even think about spending any time on a virtual tour. I'll have a hell of a lot on my plate.

* Re-qual Subs (If I get another SSBN this should be no problem)

* Re-qual Radio Supervisor (May-be a little harder this time as the boat I want will have CSRR (Common Submarine Radio Room) vice IRR (Integrated Radio Room)

* Qual COW (Chief of the Watch)

* Qual Dive

* Qual Duty Chief

As you can see that's a lot to get done and I hate wasting time so I may be able to get all that done in one patrol with the only exception of Dive which will probably take 2-3 patrols for me to get done.

This has most likely already been posted here but just in case no one has seen it yet head over to http://www.tubedaze.com/film1.htm to catch the first season of shipwreak. A sub parody made by submariners. Most people out of the community wont get it but most who served will.

USS Grayback (LPSS-574), USS Jack (SSN-605) one Med run and I knew that I belonged back in the Pacific, USS Barbel (SS-580), USS Los Angeles (SSN-688) and USS Olympia (SSN-717) totalling 21 years in the Silent Service (1973-1994). Hunter/Killer all the way:rock: ESM, Radar, Periscope E&E, Nav tech. (just to name a few):hmm:

Quick shortened story: When you're tasked to give a tour of the boat at a foreign port (diesel boat) and you're hung over (and it's not even your duty day) the first thing you should do is take the group into the fwd torpedo room, stand by the nose of an old Mk 14 torpedo and as you explain how a torpedo works, make sure to stress that upon impacting the nose portion the torpedo explodes, while at the same time hitting the nose with a rubber mallet as you say "like this"... you'd be surprised how quick your tour group disappears.:rotfl: ...and yes, the Duty Officer was not a happy camper:rotfl: . Hey, I was only an E-3 (qualified) who only wanted to sleep it off:oops: , I thought that they would have a sense of humor:hmm: . I served on the USS Phoenix (SSN-702) from 1981 - 1984. Was part of the commissioning crew (plankowner) and was homeported in Norfolk, VA. Qualified in submarines in 1983 during our "Around the World" deployment to the Indian Ocean. Stood watches as Officer of the Deck and Engineering Officer of the Watch.
