This is just a post to say hello and kind of introduce myself. I know, I am coming in late, but hey! Better than never.

My love affair with submarine sims started - now let me see... probably with 688 Attack Sub, which I enjoyed. Then, Red Storm Rising, perhaps the best ever sub simulation - I spent countless hours on it. Microprose created a jewel :) I played a lot of them, Das Boot (was a little slow), Silent Service and sequels, a Jane's (briefly, somehow my game got corrupted) and a few more I cannot remember.

You'll notice a mix of WWII (and I for that matter) games along with modern sub sims. Well, I can't tell you what I prefer. Actually I can: A well designed game, be it classic or modern. I had given SH III a run a while back, but I just reinstalled and downloaded GWX, which is amazing! Well done indeed.

Currently on Patrol 4, around 30000 tns... "displaced" with 97% realism and yes, I do save the game now and then while on patrol.

A couple of questions if I may:

1) I get messages now and then about events at specific coordinates. Is this something I can use (I don't see a way to navigate with lat/lon) or just immersion?

2) I hear good things about the SH3 Commander mod. Is it compatible with GWX? Will it make me retire early? I'd rather play out the whole war I think =P

3) I downloaded a little "mod" for GWX that makes the hydrophones work better (actually copies the old SHIII propeller files back and gives you a propeller rotation count cheat sheet of sorts). Is it safe to use? Does it diminish quality in any way?

I did take a peek at SHIV (rented it at my local videostore), but I cannot say I was impressed... I like the idea of playing the Pacific campaign, but I had sound crashes and other issues, while the gameplay was a little more... simplified. Fewer buttons, fewer controls... I DID like the american TDCs though!

Anyway, I hope there are still people out there playing SH III that would accept a newbie z. S. ;)

P.S.: Speaking german makes SH III even more enjoyable. Any other mods (skins, textures, but also reality enhancers) that are *SAFE* to use with GWX?

Thanks again :)

Welcome aboard!

1) AFAIK, GWX models some historical events, so I think some of the messages actually have a meaning, but most (position reports from other boats, SOS messages etc.) are there just for the immersion.

2) Yes, SH3Cmdr works with GWX. And no, it doesnt force you to retire if you dont want to. There should be a setting for that.

3) Havent used that mod, so not sure what all it changes. If it only changes the sounds, it is 100% safe.

For the other extra mods, there's a skinpack for GWX made that I'd recommend.

Check this site for the skinpack and the SH3Cmdr downloads:

Tons! Have a look at the sticky threads in the mod forum.

I downloaded the xrated pack. It includes better looking torpedo damages, longer wakes, harder depth charges shakes, a slide out console, the open hatch mod, etc, etc.

Woah - rented? A PC game? I haven't seen PC games for rental since the early 90s. I remember back then we'd rent them, install them, and then return them. And then we'd try to remember to uninstall them:p.

I guess renting them makes more sense now that copy protection is around. Kinda...

Its never too late. Welcome and hope you enjoy your stay. SH3Commander is a must have and you can override the early retirement or configure it to not retire you if you don't want to. Most things are configurable with it and I find it indispensible for handling all the annoying crew awards things etc. Love it and won't sail without it.
