This has to be yet the craziest thing I've seen in-game so far. I get the "drop off spy" mission on the Toykyo Bay and just as I get about 2 miles out from the drop off I see a Jap Destroyer cruising at about 35 knots. So I wait for it to clear the area but he dooes'nt. Instead, he goes in reverse at 38 knots. Stops at about my position, then repeats this, over and over and over. I try firing fish at him but they are no match for the super human speed. So I surface and expend about 30 rounds into him, gett'n a little damage but nothing too bad. I surely hope this is just a bug and that the devs don;t think Destroyers of the day could kick in reverse at 35knots, just to kick it up to 38 knots, IN REVERSE. :rotfl:

Vanilla SH3 the DD could stop like a car and throw it in reverse. Something else for the mod list.
I noticed that too the other day. A DD was making flank and came too close to shore, it immediately went into flank reverse at 32 knots. I was hoping to pop a fish into it but with kind of maneuverability it wasn't going to happen. On the other hand, if you can get them to run over you they go down nicely.:D
I've mentioned the the extreme acceleration of all the ships in th ebug thread. Even BB's can accelerate at 1 knot per second from dead stop.

Most high-speed warships could only travel in reverse at about one-third of their forward speed. Also, ships are very hard to steer in reverse at any speed. Destroyers should only be reversing at about 12 knots, if that.
Also, it takes time to give the order, send the signal, disengage the engines and reverse them.

i took a long trip to rio de janeiro-brazil (my city), in SH3 to check on something.
They didnt model the turds floating on the water !!! :shifty: :shifty:
...I sailed into Venice and couldn't get the stink out of my boat for weeks...:D

I've only done a few quick missions, and I must say the DD's are very good, maybe too good.I had a tincan drop a couple of DC's on me,and I was all stop and under a thermal layer.I cheated,by using F11,and by golly if the Can didn't throw it in reverse and drop a few more.I flank speeded out,and then shut down again, and I was able to loose him.I hope a kind hearted modder takes the teeth out of them DD's a wee bit:lol: Everything I have read about Japanese ASW indicates it wasn't very good at all, till towards end of war.

You've seen the DDs do it? I've seen those, cruisers, and carriers stop reverse and forward all at full speed like they were sports cars. I wasn't sure it was the same with anybody else until I saw this thread.

No leave it, if the destroyers start acting like pansies we be all moaning that they aren't agressive enough.
Be more agressive!:)

I think this is the way the game handles the no-collision policy.
When they get close to another ship, they stop on a dime and
go backwards in about 2 seconds....

I got a screen shot somewhere of a DD that was trying to get me and I hid under the merchant. He was running full speed, tossed it in reverse and would not deviate from course as now the merchant was heading for him. So after about 10 minutes I slid lose and watched the convoy sail off over the horizon with the DD still in reverse. Its not jsut the DD though. I've seen battleships do the exact same thing.
I don't want the DD's to get thier teeth pulled. More deadly AI would be better. I would just like them to act like real ships.

Destroyes (and most likely other ships as well) don't suffer from inertia in SH3/4. In reality it takes a while of drifting before thousands of tons cloud come to a rest. This isn't modelled in SH3/4 (which is a pity)

I was disappointed by the way that AI collisions were virtually impossible in SH3. You'd see a destroyer making 25 kts towards a C2 on a collision course, and seconds before impact he would go into extreme reverse. In cases where every direction entailed a collision, the ships involved would just freeze. I'd like to see the odd collision, and the catastrophy to follow. That would be cool.

Ive seen carriers do this too. (27kts in reverse:huh: ) I think it has got something to do with the pathfinding of the AI ships needing some work.
I failed a specop team insertion mission like this (2 times in a row) because the rubber dinghy would not stop reversing and going again.
Noted one funny thing though: the dinghy tried to alter its course everytime he went forward again, trying to find a better route, while the carrier and DD's ive seen doing this (saw a small gunboat do it too at rabaul harbor) just keep going in a straight line.
You can sink these ships. Only thing is you have to hit them on their forward leg.
