View Full Version : How badly is your hull damaged?
Without knowing the percentage of hull damage in GWX, diving deep can have disastrous consequences.
I have noticed that when the hull is damaged, when you start the game, lights will flicker in the Zentralle and there will be some sparking. The bigger the damage, the longer the flickering and sparking will last.
On my last patrol, the sparking lasted close to 10 seconds. When returning to port, I was shoked to find out my hull integrity was down to 56%.
I'm glad I did not have to go deeper than PD on the last half of my patrol, A dive to 100 meters could have been disastrous.
Has anyone else observed the sparking and timed it to assess damage?

Um - not sure about that - I use the onset of the sparking/lights out to mean that I'm below my safe depth. After I take damage, I go down to a deep depth - like 140m or so. If at any point i see the 'sparking' (and my CE says 'we are taking damage sir'), I note the depth and quickly blow ballast. From now on, I can't go that deep. If you are getting the 'sparking' effect, you are probably taking more damage, and hence reducing your safe depth. In short, I wouldn't advise hanging around to count sparking times because...they will get longer:)

Does anyone know the ratio of your sub's hull integrity to the crush depth? I ask this cause i've noticed that even when i have like 90% HI and i dive deep to about 180 meters then the sparking, creaking noises and lights flickering starts? Some one good at math should know what im talking about...i hope:hmm:
O and i also noticed that the deeper you go, the more "nervous" the helmsman are, like he always turns around and looks at me, hahaha

Don't forget the glass from the guages and dials that shatters
I just tried out the new VIIC/41 model last night in a new career. The moment I got to over 1000 meters I crash dived and didn't stp til I was at 272 meters.:o
Aside from a nervous helmsman and alot of "we're diving to deep sir" it was all good. It seems that at 100% hull integrity you can go anywhere.

^^^ assuming it is modeling the real VIIC/41 (and I cant imagine why it wouldnt), the actual listed crush depth for a VIIC/41 was 275 to 325 m, and the /42 was 350 to 400 m! - so thats why you were ok. I dont think you can "go anywhere" - perhaps try diving beyond that depth and see what happens ;)
Oh I just might. Its mid 44 so when I hit a convoy I might just have to anyway.:D

Yes I love that bit. I pretend I am Marcus and ask questions about books.

Thoroughly shocking, you better get back to the party :yep: :yep: it's healthier there, even with all the shooting.

Brag, I find this a really good reminder when restarting. Especially as I like to tangle with the enemy up close.
U179 went down this way. Previously damaged by aircraft in early mission, a month later when almost home I had to evade 3 DDs . Nicely done, but a little more damage. Boof! :dead: at 245m while drifting down. I have the damage % turned off, so life can be a little exciting at times. The crew looked VERY nervous right before U179 imploded

I conducted my own deepdive experiment to see the limit of my undamaged VIIB with % integrity turned on and my planesman practically wet himself. His knee was jerking like mad :D
Mind you he was right to freak out. I went to 235m before the first drop in integrity but I pushed it too far. Managed another 12m before the sub imploded

That's why I'm waiting for drifter repair mod. With it it'll at last last longer to get such holes closed which might cause your sinking. In real, one hit through the tube would have made it impossible to dive. Yesterday I took several shells from an escort and was able to repair the damage before I reached 100 meters. :nope:

I've only noticed this when re-loading a submerged save (not a good idea). Wasn't sure whether anything was actually degrading/breaking or whether it was just a glitch...
Anyway I avoid submerged saves now due to other odd behaviour like missing tonnage, sunk ships that are afloat again but not allowable targets etc.

That's strange cos I never save whilst submerged :hmm:
It's a good indicator though that your boat is damaged :arrgh!:
