Just started my career in 1941 and the first patrol is Marshall Islands navigated there and the star turned grey and I got order to engage and destroy enemy merchants.

Have now been sailing the islands for days and have found no shipping at all can anyone suggest the best place to patrol in this area.

Also any tips on finding targets would be very useful.

Thanks guys.

Make sure you turn your radar on and set it to 80000 and continuous sweep... sometimes mine turns off on me and then you dont get any radar contacts (besides from the AA radar, lol)

Thanks for the prompt reply but I'm in a Porpoise and don't have a radar onboard.

Well you might get contact reports, otherwise submerge periodically and try to listen for contacts with the hydrophones.

I didn't see anything around there either. So I went down to Rabaul and sunk two escorts partoling the entrance to the harbor and went in and cleaned up on the docked ships. Don't get too close on the surface though as there are a couple of stationary gun boats in there.

Tried this also and the only contact I picked up was a friendly tanker chased it for ages until I identified it:)

Is there any area in the Marshall Islands which would make a better hunting ground. The first part of the patrol is complete but I have no idea how long the second stage will take and to be honest I'm getting a bit bored with the sailing about randomly.

I give it about 5 days. Also, grab you map that came with the game. Look for the shipping lanes. Head in the lanes and see whats up.

Hopefully you are not part of the Canadian crowd that did not get the map:oops:

hehe. yes, the marshall islands are pretty much filled with American ships when they send you there [first mission, 1941].

i head west towards guam. you will hit air traffic soon after leaving the Marshalls west, enemy ships can be found around there.

another option is to head towards wake island after getting the star grey. wake gets hit twice really fast in 41' [second time falling to the Japs] plenty of nasties floating around wake for months..

Thanks for that I thought heading towards Wake would be the way to go.

When I first started playing, weeks ago, in the intro to WW2 pacific, I didn't find any ships in the Marshalls. Even in the port of Wake after it had be captured by the Japanese. Later, though, I found targets to the west of the Marshalls.

edit: oh, other people have said this too. sorry for the repetition.

I have been sent there on the same mission 3 times ina row, and I have yet to find an enemy ship there. I will complete my patrol objective then usually get ordered to depoly there and engage merchant ships. After the flag has grayed out I sail kinda SW to the port that's between the Marshall Islands and the Caroline Islands ( sorry forgot the name) and there is usually a tanker and large merchant docked there.

If that does not get my 10K tons for the objective, I go inbetween Rabaul ( Solomon Islands) and Truk ( Caroline Islands): there are usually tons of ships traveling there. I went into the Bismark Sea this last time and everytime I got near a convoy/task force, the weather got so bad that I could not even see >100m. It is mid '42 in my career BTW.:ping:

Don't hold your breath, there are no ships in the campaign layers there that I can see. None.

My first patrol sent me there as well. Covered the area from southeast to northwest and I saw more allied shipping than anything else. :ping: Used them to practice manual TDC setups.:know: The good news is I was able to approach within 1000 yards and wasn't spotted.

Good luck

I patroled there for two weeks and saw nothing. Low on fuel I headed back to Midway for refit and three convoys were reported on radio right were I had been. If I went back I would not have had enough fuel so I went to midway, refueled, went back and sunk three merchants and then RTB. Its war!

I have read in a german forum that someone has investigating the campaign files in the SHIV editor and there is no enemy traffic in the area of the Marshall and Gilbert Islands between 1941 and 1945. Maybe a mistake by the campaign designer?:88)

The campaign was left unfinished. There are many, many signs of this if you take a peek at the files. ;)

My second patrol was to go to the Marshall Island area. Produced no contact. Once my 48 patrol order was complete, I headed West to Guam and made trouble there. You should be able to find groups of small and medium merchants sprinkled with Large old split frieghters moving North-South off the west coast of guam. (May 1942)
