View Full Version : Life Rafts Need Toning Down

Earlier I took out a Merchant which jettisoned a few lifeboats. Then I watched as a Destroyer came in and hit one of the lifeboats. This was followed bu the sounds you usually get if your subs being rammed.

I then continued to watch as the Destroyer caught fire and keeled over and sunk.

I almost felt guilty laying into the rest of the unescorted convoy, especially after it was sunk by one of their own. It's kinda funny, BUT NOT.

Think the damage modelling or strength of the Life Rafts need a bit of tweaking.

I've sunk destroyers that rammed into my conning tower before but wow, a lifeboat? I didn't know they doubled as mines.

The lifeboat crew, pissed at the escorts lack of skill, decided to take some scuttling charges and get revenge on thier slacking escort!

I'd be happy if the watch crew didn't scream "SHIP SPOTTED! SHIP SPOTTED!" like a sugar-addled three year old when the lifeboats appear.

Which file holds the damage values for all the stuff in game, is it Zones.cfg?

I'm trying to find the stuff for the life rafts but I can only see this so far.

[boat]
Multiplier=1.000000
Flotability=0.000000
HitPoints=5
Destructible=Yes
Effect1=#Fire_small, 80
Effect2=#Small_splinter_explosion_no_halo, 100
Armor Level=1
Critic Flotation=0.300000
Critical=No
FloodingTime=59.999996
CargoType=None

But I think this is for the life boats hanging on the ships.

EDIT: Nevermind, found it, ZON file. Gonna take a look and see if I can nerf them a bit, or a lot.

Iv scrabed a lifeboat and that didnt damage my sub - maybe the speed killed him? :doh:

This looks like a throwback to SH3 were DD would sink if they hit your tower. Looks like our rubber liferafts are made of high tinsel strenght steel also. I believe one of the modders corrected that issue in SH3. Hopefully that can happen here.

ive also noticed sometimes the life boats seem to be doing 8knots on the surface... i bet that guys arms are tired trying to keep that pace....

Well i've just modded the speed so that you can now pull up along side them or ram them. I've also tweaked the damage a bit so they are not so much of a risk to enemy/friendly shipping.

I just rammed one in training mission and although it still sounds as though you are being rammed by a Destroyer it didn't do any damage.

Just about to Rar the files and upload them.

Just had another thought about the life boats.

Whenever you sink 1 or 2 merchants in a convoy the rest of the convoy almost and often does slow to a halt. Maybe they are all trying to avoid collisions with the life rafts which virtually stops them in their tracks.

Didnt lifeboats have the spike upgrade for improved armor in WWII??

Oh ****.. nevermind, that was warcraft......

8kts - yea maybe 10 or 12 - one time i was trying to run over a life boat and it fled at flank speed. I had to really crank up the diesels to catch it. One more immersion killer.

I've learned by sheer stupidity and carelessness that the best and fastest way to get a DD off yur back is to just let it ram you. They sink everytime :dead: and your sub sails away unscathed. :rock:

I don't do that on purpose but it's happened to my sub twice so far. I imagine it's happening because I've installed the no bridge damage mod that's the temp fix for the continually wounded crew bug. At least I hope it is. :huh:

If the rafts can be toned down can sombody work on the planes as well
Ive been hit by a DD and survived
But 1 little plane smacks off my hull and its all over i sink like brick

At least I got a new sub

Gotta get the deck crew aiming beter so they shoot them down further out
:D

I saw one doing 12 knots in a 2-ship formation with a tugboat once. Never did figure that one out.

damage system need to be tuned anyway.

On the one hand i like the DCs. Only a few of them are enough to kill you even when they go up nearby. On the other hand i can surface and fight 3 destroyers at once at close range with the deckgun and chances are good for me to win at high reality settings. And then ive surfaced right in front of a huge carrier just for fun. Guess what happened...
