SD Radar

I am a bit confused on the radar, particularly the SD radar. I understand that it doesn't show up on the scope and it may pick up ships as well as airplanes but I still have a couple of questions

1) It appears that I can't turn it off, that it remains on the whole time or at least the button nor 3D display seem to do the trick. Is there a hot key to turn it off?

2) Is the SD radar a passive radar or is it active. And if I can't turn it off is it constantly "advertising" my position while I am on the surface?

Nope, there is no way to turn SD radar off.

Yes, it is active but I'm not sure Japanese RDF is modelled.

All radar is active. From what I've read, the game won't allow you to manually control the radar, or switch it on/off, until you get both the SD (air search) and SJ (surface search) radar installed on your boat.
