View Full Version : UFO Alien Invasion - Free game
Remember that old turn-based tactics series named XCOM a.k.a. UFO? Back in the early '90s it was one of the best and culminated with the masterpiece XCOM Apocalypse. The spiritual successor to this series, the new UFO After... (Afterlight, Afterglow, Aftershock a.s.o.) tried to revive the spirit of the old days, but is still flawed with bugs and conception errors. Now, a team of enthusiasts developed a real successor the XCOM, named UFO Alien Invasion, and are releasing it as freeware at:
http://ufo.myexp.de/
It is fully turn-based and goes against the current trend of CTB (continuous turn-based). This is how the XCOM series was devised in the first place and it really catches the spirit of the original. BTW, the project is still under development and looks really promising.
Hope you will enjoy it.

Wow, is that a free updated X-Com? :D
Sounds like a cool deal. Will have to get that eventually.

It's pretty good. I'm impressed, doubly so because it's free. Thanks for letting us know.

I'd love another go at X-Com. I've played through the original a few times! I own the follow ons, but never enjoyed them like the original.

anyone having played the very old "Breach" for Amiga? That one spend me a few nights, glued to the keyboard...

All download mirrors I tried (for UFO) don't work, btw, or produce just 2-4 kb/sec. Which would take me half a day to download those 250 MB.

I'm getting a fairly steady 233kb/s from kent.dl. Didn't get anything from Switzerland...so try Kent or perhaps Ireland.

Breach was good, and it was for the PC as well as AMiga. If you give me long enough, I can find Breach 3 floppies!

Alternate download on the site of a Romanian PC magazine:

Actually, this is where I found it first. I got a steady 35-40 k here.

No, i don't get through:
"You can download this file only using a web browser: XtremPC Downloads (http://www.xtrempc.ro/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=1976) "
Clicking the link sends me into a nirwana, extremely low intensity traffic, but no download initiated. IE7, medium settings. I assume that qualifies for the description of a web browser, yes? :88)

Oops, seems IE7 doesn't work. I am using Mozilla Firefox, and I had no problems. When I tried with IE7 I got just the same results as you. This still leaves you with the original site of the game (first post).

Xcom ruled. I especially liked the tracking system of ufo sightings and scrambling jets to intercept. Then sending a recovery teams to crash sites. Never has there been a game like it. Can't way to try this.

Which doesn't work for me either. Site is shown, but download links broken. Tried Mozille after having red your post, older version I still have on some CD. but it does not get through, too.

Anyone able to play a mission in this game? Seems like it is incomplete. I tried sending out a ship to a landing site (first mission) and I can't equip the ship because its broken and on the "TODO list"

I only knew about Project Xenocide, which is not even out yet.
To be honest, the first two games were the only ones I really liked. All the others, the new UFO series included, were just so-so. Apocalypse lost something, to be brutally frank.

I just finished my third. You have to do some in hop's and various other things. When the alert box comes up that has the cancel button at the bottom you have to left click on the mission statement above. (I think):D
It does get needlessly confusing trying to send the team places.

XCOM UFO: enemy unknown was a superb game, though I usually ended up being responsible for the wholessale destruction of humanity by alien forces after most of the worlds governments had withdrawn funding from my projects.
Will have to check this one out.

That is because you didn't protect them, which allowed the aliens to influence their decisions, albeit forcefully. If you didn't bother to stop incursions over a particular country, they would eventually turn.

You must install an engine in each craft you want to use. Your interceptor gets also weapons. Soldiers go in transporter. When you have dedectet an UFO first you send an interceptor. If you manage to shoot it down over land you can send your transporter with soldiers to the crashsite.
I have tried it and had no problems...:hmm:
Being playing the game for some time. Very cool and its a vintage sensation. I was a big UFO:Enemy Unknown fan.:D The only thing don't like is the ufopedia and all the information about the research and explaining texts about everything be missing from the game.

OK, played it quite a bit and it's got a good deal of promise. Concerns, in no particular order:
Saving a game works fine, but loading saved games seems impossible.
You cannot yet equip crafts with various weaponry/equipment.
There's no notification when new staff become available for hiring.
Soldiers are too experienced when recruited, reducing the need to take care of your troops. In UFO Defense, they were green recruits who couldn't hit a barn door.
The UFOpedia has no entries.
Smoke screens (from smoke grenades) appear to be totally ineffective in obstructing line of sight.
One of the greatest parts of UFO was its spooky atmosphere. Clearing a farm area by night, looking at the grisly autopsies... it wasn't a horror title, but it wasn't very cozy either, at least the first times around. So... er... people? What is with that blue alien in the red superhero costume? If I was in charge, I'd replace him outright.
Both the UFOs and alien weapons look very, very stereotypical. The PHALANX ('X-Com') craft likewise.
Stiletto-class interceptor? Who came up with that name?
One of UFO's strongest points, destruction of environment, is not yet implemented.
Incendiary weapons and explosions do not produce smoke.
Incendiary weapons do not produce flames (don't ask).
The Reaction fire system that worked so great in UFO has been rewamped. For the worse.
You're alone in fighting the aliens. While this was also true in UFO, I'd actually love to see a world that starts out with the various nations as they are today, some of them fighting each others and all of them with some sort of forces with which to fight the aliens. I'm sure it could be implemented in a good way.
No randomization. Where UFO Defense had random maps and random events (admittedly with quite a few set rules, such as the first UFO encountered always being a Small Scout and base attacks only occuring after so and so long), this game seems to have nearly no randomization at all. The features of each map (buildings, crops, hills, forests, gas stations, etc.) are set in stone, not random, and the order in which they appear also seems fixed. I'm sure that at least the latter will be changed later on.
Even the hardest difficulty level is too easy. The hardest difficulty level in the original game regularly massacred whole Skyranger-loads of troops - the hardest difficulty level in this game is only moderately challenging to me.
Where your troop ship was lost if your entire insertion team was lost in UFO, in this game there's a 100% chance of recovering your insertion craft when all your troops die. If you ask me, there should be a random chance based on several factions, or some other system. Keeping your craft makes the game too easy.It does, however, show a lot of promise, and it's the best UFO Defense remake I've seen to date. My main concern is that the spooky atmosphere from UFO Defense is missing, that maps are not random, and that terrain is not destructible. Once or if those are fixed, it'll be a great game.
