Been playing with this during the afternoon watch(means I'll have the Middle!). It appears that on the standard depth gauge in SH4 you can get the boat to 32-33ft. However you go through the Dive sequence and the bridge is cleared of personnel. But lo! The TBT or Binoculars can be used. So I have taken it that its just the Skipper "up top" still able to con the boat. Decks Awash/Hull Down was a well tried and used attack proceedure both in the Atlantic and the "Far Flung" (Far East) particularly at night, the boat presenting an absolute minimum target aspect for "keen eyes" and Radar of escorts et al, yet affording more accurate TDC information.

I'm using the porpoise class and can get on deck at 40 feet. I also get my scope higher by coming up in depth. My sail is out of the water but I can see the mast tips better. This helps in rough weather. I have not attempted to run deck awash but I'm guessing I can get to 40 feet with access to the conning tower TBT. I try it next time I hit the war zone.

Crew seems to go below at 25 feet.

At 31 feet. No crew.

Your profile at 36 feet.

Me on the tower at 36 feet. Crew below but no matter. TBT is still usable.

The "Stormy Seas Sub Gun Fix" mod includes a Decks Awash feature:

Still runnign without Mods so far on this install attempt so I can sort out what bugs/standard behaviors exist in stock vs possibly being attributable to mods. Tried running decks awash in the Porpoise you get in the sub school, and got a pretty decent approximation of it at an ordered depth of 25 or 26 feet. For some reason, the sub never actually reached that depth on the indicator dial (always showed depth of about 21-22 feet), and the boat was trimmed stern-heavy for some reason, but there would be water across the deck about 50-60% of the time and the crew was still up top. If I ordered 27 or 28 feet (hard to click a precise depth with these dials), the sub would drop to about 25 feet (still never actually reaching the ordered depth) and the crew would leave the bridge when it hit 25 feet. Probably would be useful if this were modded to let you get 3 or 4 feet deeper before the crew leaves, so you wouldn't lose your spotting capability when running at decks awash, so I guess I'll play around with the thread noted above to tweak this.

It isn't really exagerated or a big deal, but I wonder if the stern-heavy thing is "normal"/historical or can be addressed if not - doesn't seem to serve any real useful purpose (and seems like having the bow higher would increase your dive time) unless you need to keep the bow up for sea-keeping purposes in heavier seas or something.

@Panther,

Yep, order 25 feet and she stays at 22-23 feet. A small tweek by our talented modders and we are good to go!
