View Full Version : How to finish a patrol / complete a mission ?

My patrol told me to patrol the sea of celebes, while I think i did... for about 2 weeks, sunk one merchant and one battleship, The objectives are still not complete.
What are the requirements? Do I have to do a SH3 and just do laps of one little block of the ocean for 24 hours?, because I thought I could roam around the whole area of the celebes sea, but perhaps I'm wrong.
Any ideas ?
Also, I spent so long out on that mission when I gave up and returned to manilla I was no longer able to dock, I can't remember being told to go somewhere else either, I ended up slogging it down to Indonesia , made it with about 10% fuel left too.

As for docking, you were parked over/near the blue anchor on the nav map yes?

had the same problem, either with the objective type 'Engage all merchant shipping in...' or 'patrol x sea' - the mission objective won't complete - so I just ignored it and went home. However, I found that in one mission, upon reloading, after having patrolled the area designated for quite some time prior to saving - the mission objective was suddenly completed.
So perhaps try patrolling the area for some time, save and load the save - maybe that'll do the trick?
And yes, you can't dock at Manila in that mission (I suppose it was the second mission with the Asiatic fleet? I had to patrol Celebes Sea in that one, too), you have to make your way to Soerabaya, as Manila has been captured by the Japanese.

I have the same problem. I am patroling the same square as ordered, detecting next to no traffic and constantly having to dive because of aircraft. It's very annoying. How big of an area can I patrol? The grid box or within a certain range of the mission objective?
I am getting very frustrated with the amount of aircraft spotted warnings... and thanks to having no gun ammo left I am without protection and have to cash dive everytime.
Any advice?

Yes correct...but very grrrr...this is not the way of doing games

I just ignore those objectives for now... loose some renown, but I make that up by sinking alot of capital ships. As I suggested, try reloading a save after having patrolled the area for a while - it worked for me once in the 'Engage merchant shipping' type mission. No idea why, though.
And I have no clue how large an area you are supposed to patrol, I don't think it's grid sensitive, though?

Just to answer my own question, it appears in the mission file;
Radius=100.000000
Now I dont know if that value is in KM or in Nm.
100Km is 54Nm
100Nm is 185Km
I would prefer for the radius from the center point to be in Nm as it gives me more room to roam in. Anyone got any idea what the unit is?
Oh and time, is in minutes?
Time=2880.000000
That would mean I need to be on station withing the 100Whatevers for 48 hours, presuming the 2880 is in minutes?!?!
Anyone confirm this?
This is weird, on my first patrol to the Philipene sea I didn't even get that close to the star and it triped, and when I was assigned to celebes It didn't trip at all.

Yes, it seems it is at least 100km and time seems to be really in minutes so it seems to be 48 hours.
I was patrolling few kilometers from gold star with binos and it was completed after about 1 day and 16-20 hours.
I didnt counted down from time i crossed patrol perimeter (that should be at least 100 km), i started counting down as soon as i hit gold star... So it should be about 2 days.

American Sub Commanders were quite independent. if no enemy sighted for a few days, they would move to find some. sometimes very far from the patrol area if they had the fuel for it. some skippers would run for days to check out a hunch of theirs.
also, patrol areas are huge, no grid system at all.

I went out on a order to patrol the Celebes Sea.
The bicnocular star was at the very east side of the sea and it stated for me to patrol Celebes Sea.
I spent over five days steaming back in forth in that mud pit, did not see one floating piece of wood, and spent over half my diesel fuel.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHH! :damn:
What exactly is the requirement that needs to be forfilled to complete the patrol?
In SHIII, you had to stay in the area for 24 hours, here it doesnt say.
Do I have to sink a certain amount of tonnage?
Im running at 100% releastic.

Reaching your patrol zone should have shown objective completed in your log. Then I get new orders saying I need to sink some tonnage...secondary objective I think.

I think you only get those messages when your mission objective is marked by a flag. But since I've never completed a binocular mission I don't know if you get this message as well.

Nope, there are 2 type of missions
First is only patrol designed area (stay close to star with binos - 100km or miles, im not sure which counts in perimeter) for 48 hours, change view and get back, star will be greyed out
Second is more confusing, its called DEPLOY AT ...... When u reach patrol area, star will grey out and u get second objective, to SINK SOME TONNAGE. I didnt found out the perimeter of patrol and how much do i need to sink for objective accomplished.

OK, thanks for that info.
I have exactly the same objective, I've been there for 2 days, sunk 4 Merchants and shot down 3 planes... still no update so I've just plotted aload of course points around the marker and hoping :(

I don't know exactly what the requirement is but I did complete a patrol mission on my first patrol of my first career.
It was on full difficulty with the exception of External Views and Auto-TDC (stadimeter crash in V1).
I went to the patrol area, sunk a ship or two, made contact and status reports and stayed around the objective point and eventually it said complete.
By the end I think I had used all my torps too which may also have a been a requirement.

Yep, I started another campaign and the first mission had the flag on it. I just had to get around the general area and I get a popup stating that I need to sink some ships. The star/flag turns from yellow to grey.
So far I sank two ships for a total around 7500t and ran into one Aussie ship that I nearly sank. LOL

Look in the Data/Campaign/Objecives or something. There are a bunch of folders for all the mission types in the game. In each folder there is a .MIS file that will give you paramters for success. I think the defalt tonnage for sinking shipping is 10,000.
You can change these of course.

<My 1st patrol was star+binoculars to japan left PG 10th Dec 41, got to the star 17days later on the 27th Dec 41. Patrolling up and down the coast of Japan I sunk a total of 12 ships, 4 with torps, and 8 with Deck gun 4 of the 8 were 2tn fishing boats. The even after I ran out of torps and shells the icon didn't change colour until 11th Jan 42, that patrol mission once I reached the star was 14days. Sinking any amount of ships/tonnaged did not change it, it only changed after the 14 days were up.

I'm running an S class from the start of the campaign (12/10/41) and in my former patrol I made the transfer to Freemantle. Now I've started patrol 4, on orders to depart Freemantle and patrol the Jawa Sea (nice spelling Ubisoft), problem is it's giving me the binocular icon as my patrol icon and I can't manage to complete the objective.
I've spent a few weeks in the Java Sea, decimated a convoy for 5 ships and 30k+ tons, expended all my torpedo's, yet the objective hasn't completed, so I returned to Freemantle and they wouldn't let me dock.
The only options that I get are Refit, and Postpone.....so I'm headed back to the Java Sea to hopefully sink another convoy, since I just missed a massive battle in the Coral Sea.
Anyone else having a problem completing "patrol and kill" missions?

For the binocular missions, just stay within 60 nm or so of the icon, and it should complete within 48 hours.. at least, it did for me.
As for other missions... its hard to tell. For a "flag" mission, I couldn't seem to complete the second objective to "sink merchant shipping", despite sinking over 18,000 tons after 2 and a half weeks at sea, so I just started on my way back to Pearl.
About halfway back, the second objective completed.

From what I've been reading,some of the binocular missions can take anywhere from 7-14 days of patrolling the area to clear.
Im supposed to patrol of some island, but when I reach the target, the mission still says incomplete....whats up with that?

Remember to keep sending patrol reports to base. I have been doing this at midnight each day of the patrol and orders are updated all the time. In 14 days at sea i have done 2 "patrol region" missions and a "photo op" mission during the same patrol.
Each time I came within 120-55 nm of the "flag" to get the "search region and destroy shipping" part of the mission. One of the missions I sank 2 ships and the other I shot down 1 aircraft. I was on patrol for max 48 hrs each.
Keep headquarters informed.
P.S. On second patrol i dropped off a supply raft and didnt get any further instructions. I headed for a area that might have targets and just after my midnight report I got notified to go patrol a sea to the north.
Again. Keep HQ informed.

Also. I suspect that someone could read this better than I, but it looks like the time is set: (see this example)
[Objective 1]

Again: It looks like you have to get within a certain range as well: Example

LOng and LAt plus Range. 100 what? miles?
For a "sink targets in area mission":
[MapZone 1]
Name=Sink Luzon Strait 01_Zone1
Radius=100.000000
MaxHeight=1000.000000
MinHeight=-1000.000000

I read this as get within 100 miles? of Long/lat. and sink min 10000 tons.
For Guard missions.
[MapZone 1]
Name=Guard Palau Islands 01_Zone1
Radius=40.000000

It looks like they send aircraft to fight within the range 40 miles and you have to rescue min 5 survivors
I been on station for 3 days for a "supply" mission... enroute was order to attack 2 task force convoys and inflict heavy damage... got 1 heavy cruiser... severly damaged a battle ship (didn't sink... I ran out of torps... hit it 4 fish out of 4 though... all in the bow area)... sank 2 small passenger tranports... and a medium frieghter... all for 17,000 tons... in an S boat 8o% reality (I have external camera and target plotting on)... And THAT secondary mission STILL says incomplete!!! Only so much damage you can do with an S-boat.... I have been at the point where I need to drop off supplies for 3 days now... still haven't figured out hom to "dropp off the supplies"!!!! :damn: :damn:
Any idea what I need to do??

Get in range of shore and Stop engines. The most important fact being STOP engines.
Thanks for the info Glidor!
I wonder if this is worthy of being addressed in a future patch. While some missions are pretty straightforward, others don't make the objectives that clear. A little bit of feedback from COMSUBPAC wouldn't hurt... :)
Perhaps in the way of more detailed briefings, including maybe the area of patrols and the minimum expected duration or tonnage.
Then again, I don't think all missions should realistically be a success, so failure is always an option.
Thanks Gildor... that did it... I was just kind of cruising in circles off the coast.. :oops: :lol:

I don't think they would change bases again....because I seem to never get the message that my base has changed.
But then again it would be nice to actually be able to check the messages without almost crashing the game each time.
Guess what your base has changed, its brisbane now.

Got this tip from this forum, but it seems to really work. Radio a status report once a day or so. Doing this has caused my mission to change, when it wasn't before. For example, I was ordered to destroy shipping in Honshu area. I sank a few ships, radioed that night a status report, and was ordered to patrol the East China sea, where I am heading now. Anybody ever get an order to return to base? Just curious. I am going to need to soon anyhow, as I am getting low on fuel.

as long as you have half a dozen torpedos theyll give yo uanother objective. regardless of fuel level. only time i ever got a suggestions to rtb was after i reporteded contact with a taskforce and they told me they were sending in backup to break contact and rtb at my own descretuion but it wasnt part of my objective to go home ever
I think you can use your own initiative to return to base. The renown you lose for not completing a current mission is not substantial. I think a patrol mission is 200 renown or something. Let me check:
For example, Patrol Java Sea 01:
[MapZone 1]
Name=Patrol Java Sea 01_Zone1
Radius=100.000000
MaxHeight=1000.000000
MinHeight=-1000.000000
Long=13111750.000000
Lat=-415000.000000
Height=0.000000
[Objective 1]
ObjName=Patrol Java Sea 01_Objective1
Obj=7
ObjType=0
RenownAwarded=200
AreaName=Patrol Java Sea 01_Zone1
AreaType=0
Presence=0
Time=2880.000000
Get within 100 nm of the icon, Patrol for 2880 min (48 hours) and you get 200 renown. I report status as soon as I get within 100 nm so they know I have arrived. It also allows you to see later in your log when you arrived to figure out 48hrs later. (I'm so forgetful)
Also, make at least 1 patrol report back to headquarters per day. In my opinion, this is what triggers an update to your status.
Works everytime for me.

How do you complete a patrol mission? I arrived at the point on the map, stopped, a few merchants came close so I did the decent thing and sunk them, went back to the spot on the map, waited, got attacked by plains, shot a few down, basically had a ball but still had not got the tick for completing the objective. So what’s the secret?
Thanks

Hang around for 24 hours then it will turn gray. After that you will be sent another mission to complete.

Hi, I have some troubles with the patrol missions, for example: Patrol off Honshu island and Patrol off Marshall Islands. I tried about everything, at the marshalls I patrolled all the islands (never ran into an enemy ship) but the mission stays incomplete. Do I have to sink a specified tonnage before i can complete this mission? or for the Honshu mission, do i have to steam all around Honshu Island with starting and ending point in the star?

If it's the binoculars icon you need to just hang in the area for 48 hours. I usually just turn off the engines and sit there since you're required to be within something like 50km of it.

I've run into this a bit as well, but I've had luck with staying fairly close to the binocular map icon (within about 100 miles of it) and patrolling for at least 48 hours.
When you get mission orders to "Engage and destroy enemy merchant shipping" you have to sink at least 10,000 tons for that to be marked as completed.
All I can suggest is sending progress reports daily. Last night I was enroute to Honshu and sank 2 DD's that would not leave me alone as well as a large modern freighter. My patrol area was marked complete, and I was ordered to sink enemy merchants while I was still over 750 nm from my patrol zone. I think it has something to do with the reports that you send.

Yes, sending reports on convoys and sinkings will generate new things for you to do. Last night I got a pop up after reporting a convoy I could not attack, a message popped up on the screen that said something like , good job we will send other assest to attack the convoy, return to port when ready. Very cool.
I have been saving and loading the same mission to try and solve this issue. i have over 4 days in the boat, but still the mission wont complete (Again its mission 3 from a new career) I am partoling Celebes Sea. I have been around the orange star for ages now, sinking countless contacts. Still no grey star?
Is there a way to edit the save game file, I could in SH3. I have looked at my save game files, but cant find it.

Just a thought: the option to have the navigator plot a search pattern is still in, maybe completing that one is enough? I'm on the 'getting agents ashore' mission myself so I have no idea if that actually works.
A change in the patrol status is only triggered by "sending status reports"
At least once a day send a status report back to HQ. Example:

Hi all,
I'm having trouble with some of the missions. In particular the mission called, engage and destroy enemy merchant shipping. They are often in non shipping lane locations. I patrol until I'm out of fuel and don't run into a single ship!! That and how many ships am I supposed to destroy? Am I just supposed to patrol around the area for a fixed amount of time? Do I drive into the star and stop and wait?? I seem to get these types of missions the most but have yet to be able to complete one.

Here's the easy way:
1. Cruise out to the patrol icon. Use 1/3 speed.
2. All stop. Compress time until the mission has been "completed". I believe 48 hours will do it.
3. Party on, dude. Cruise 1/3 to where there are convoys and sink something.

even for the merchant shipping missions?
48 hours inside the star? I tried putting around the celebes sea (where the star was) and never got a mission complete. You must have to stick pretty close eh? I wish they would be back the fixed grids and not the dynamic ones in IV.

it depends..if it is 'deploy' all you have to do is get relatively close then it gives you a new objective to sink merchants. im not sure what completes that tonnage or vessels sunk or what..just take out some merchants until its complete. if it is 'patrol' then just park there and do what tycho said. 'patrol' completion has no correlation to ships sunk just time spent
Search and destroy missions need a certain amount of tonnage to complete.
As stated previously, you do not HAVE to complete missions. If you are getting low on fuel for God's sake head back to port to refit or end patrol.
Example:
[MapZone 1]
Name=Sink Honshu 01_Zone1
Radius=100.000000
MaxHeight=1000.000000
MinHeight=-1000.000000

Lat=4163261.000000
Height=0.000000

ZoneName=Sink Honshu 01_Zone1
[Objective 2]
ObjName=Sink Honshu 01_Objective2
Obj=2
ObjType=2
RenownAwarded=250
Tonnage=10000
TonnageType=1
Get to within 100 NM?(or KMS?) of location, sink 10000 tonnage.
You dont have to sink the tonnage within the range I have found. And nothing is preventing you from just heading home. You would just not get the extra renown for completion.

That sounds the most logical yet. Good find m8. :yep:
Okay, I am highly frusturated and looking to see if anyone else is having this issue:
Starting in 41 from Manila, in career mode with ANY boat if first mission is to drop off troops or supplies I have no problem completing the mission, BUT, if the first mission is patrolling the Luzon Straight of off the Phillipines (Sulu Sea) or dropping off troops and then patrolling the Luzon Straight, I can NEVER accomplish it.
Once I get to the patrol area the orange icon never grays back out thus rendering it impossiable to complete the mission.
It is driving my insane!! I can go on a frenzy sinking ships but can never accomplish the missiondue to this.
Anyone else having this issue?
Thanx!!

You need to stay in the area for 48 hours. It also helps to sink a few and report contacts. Eventually a pop up will come with further instructions.

Yup. All the solutions given here so far work.

Made 8 patrols, sometimes achieved the objectives, sometimes not. Made at least one sinking by torpedo on each patrol, all patrols ended okay.
9th Patrol, patrol Solomons, early '43, out of Brisbane. Sank 6 small craft with guns, achieved objective with no torpedoes expended. Attacked by aircraft and prop shafts damaged. DC crew cannot repair. Head for Tulagi and the depot ship. Prop shafts repaired, fuel replenished but not ammo. Radio patrol report and reassigned to patrol Solomons again. 20 minutes later prop shafts are damaged again (kind of like the damage to the conning tower that reoccurs after 20 minutes). Abort patrol and make for Brisbane. Arrive Brisbane but unable to end patrol, refit option only. Take refit, get fuel, shafts repaired, no ammo. Set off back to patrol area. 20 minutes later prop shafts damaged. Complete the second patrol, only contact a US task force and several enemy aircraft. Return to Brisbane and still unable to complete patrol.
Suggestions please
Fire off all of your torpedoes. Then make a radio report. They should tell you to end the mission then.
Try to go back to Fremantle.
Did you change flotilla or received a new command?
Anyway, to be sure you can check in this file if your base was changed
go to:
CareerTrack.upc in the savedgames folder (in C:\Documents and Settings\...\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg)
You can open it with Notepad

Ah! As long as they don't make me pay for the torpedoes, could be the answer.
Thanks
One good way is to find a deep shot and hit the D key and go 1024xTC.

I'm currently in my 9th patrol of my first career in SHIV. Patrols 1-3 were in the USS Seadragon, patrols 4-8 were in the USS Drum. For my 9th patrol I was given command of the USS Balao and tranferred to Brisbane. Ok, started my patrol and headed for the Northern Marianas were I was ordered to engage enemy shipping. After completing the assigned tasks I sent a status report to ComSubPac. They radioed back, telling me to patrol an area west of Truk in the Caroline Islands. Arrived on station and proceeded to attack enemy shipping in the process expending all my torpedoes. I sent a status report to ComSubpac saying I had expended all torpedoes and returned to Brisbane. I was not offered the option to end my patrol, only Refit or Postpone. I've ran and completed my ninth patrol three different times, with the same results. Any help or suggestions on what to do to complete this patrol so I can move on would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem and the solution probably is: You were reassigned to Fremantle. Go to Fremantle and you shoud be able to end your patrol.

i have been told to patrol just outside Tokyo i have reached the star and havent seen a ship for ages. my question is that on the oders screen it still says my mission is incomplete, so do i actually have to sink something before it says completed?

Basically patrol within 100nm of the star for 48 hours. Report in after 48 hours and you should be directed to do something else. Always helps to sink ships...that is what you are there for...I have had some fruitless 48 hours but still got orders to go elsewhere.
Try to go back to Fremantle.

My second patrol out of Manilla. I did the troop insertion, then was told to patrol a grid - objective accomplished. Then sailed back to Manilla but I couldn't end the mission. I fired my last two torps and did a patrol report. I'm still waiting for end of mission. As I said both mission objectives were checked. 5 merchants 1 warship for 27,000 tons. I don't think my base was overrun. Not sure what's up.

Also, if you are in this situation and out of torps, you can hunt for a convoy within your assigned patrol area and make a contact report. HQ will tell you other assets will attack the target and you are to return home at your discression.
I have also found that unlike SH3, a patrol area timeout isn't a fixed 24 hours or even 48 hours (as some here have experienced.) It can be longer. I also suspect the patrol area is a circle with a roughly 55-60 nm radius. I've considered saving more torps for the assigned patrol areas now and less shooting at T.O.O. along the way. HQ seems to send me to juicy spots.

I had the same problem as a few others... could not get the "end patrol" message when entering port. Checked the files Lukemb suggested and sure enough, they changed my port from Brisbane to Fremantle. I saw no messages stating my port had changed.
I'd been endlessly sailing the seas, refitting and sinking tonnage several times hoping I would get to eventually end the patrol.
After sailing to Fremantle about 10mins ago, I was able to end patrol but they said my performance was not up to par even though I came in with 60,000 + tons of sunk shipping even got a medal... The bastages mothballed me. :stare:
Time to start a new career !:D
Thanks for the tip Lukemb.

I think the HQ replies are kinda screwy.
I was not getting any replies at all from ComsubPac with my first install. I had to guess. I recently reinstalled but have as yet to see if it fixed things.
Anyway... radio reports haven't drawn any replies for me.
I've read through much of this thread and still am not sure. Why doesn't somebody (like the game devs) post the answer to these questions!? Guess we all just have to read 3 pages of posts and then to test to see if it works? :down:

If your home base does not have a blue star on the nav map anymore, that means it's been captured and you have a new home base. If you started in Cavite, Phillipines then your next is Surabaya, Java and after that it's Fremantle, Australia. That's for the Asiatic Fleet.
